Volume 1: a huge, all-encompassing record of the artwork, people and historic contexts surrounding Vorticism during its inception, its operation and its downfall. Generally, it’s a surprisingly easy and flowing read, though at times the tone is extremely heavy and academic.

The pacing varies wildly - at times it is a riveting story of the individuals at the heart of the movement, and in others, it is a leisurely overview or analysis of a specific painting or colour choice.
There are loads of wonderful anecdotes and stories, thoroughly researched and recorded with care. So much of this movement would be lost to time without this book. Really, reading this is an adventure in itself.

It was a fascinating read but I’ll need to take a breather before stepping into the similarly huge volume 2.
