George Ritzer is well known in the field of sociology, and has written a book that is a pleasure to read, informative as he deals with Classical & Contemporary theories of every day life, Post Modern Grand theories and finishing off with Globalisation, which in this modern world in which we live is a very important part to our existence. Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx and Max Weber star in the main theories of classical work, and a great intro to the Neo- Marxian theory. After reading this is it hard to believe we are not all pro Marx. Not an easy to dip into bedtime read, but never less an eye opener to society as a whole, and the actions of the individual whether introvert or extrovert.

Ritzer is so good at laying it all out for you. A great introductory text.

??? This book is the worst. Culture and humanity dissolved into impossible to translate theory and terminology and blah, blah, blah, blah, blech! Not even the slightest bit intuitive.

This is a really informative textbook, but it reads like the authors were trying to reach a word count. Also, the chapter on feminist theory is randomly italicized halfway through, and it seems telling to me that no one caught that and fixed it before publication. Overall it's not a bad book, but I think it would benefit from better editing.

3 ⭐️ i think sociology textbooks were some of the ones i struggled the most to enjoy throughout college, just because the content is not as transferable to other areas or fields, and the layout is not always put in the most interesting way. i enjoyed the social theory course, the textbook not so much

It was the assigned textbook for SOCI 333: Contemporary Sociological Theories (I had the honour and pleasure of attending lectures delivered by one of the editors of this textbook: DR. JEFFREY STEPNISKY ). I found it to be a wonderful textbook that was easier to follow and use as a general guideline. The book provides enough knowledge about a wide range of theorists, making it an excellent starting point for further research! One of the features I particularly appreciated was the inclusion of key terms and concepts as footnotes, which was very clever and helpful for me as a student. Overall, it’s a solid resource for anyone studying sociology, effectively bridging classical and contemporary theories in a way that’s engaging and accessible!
