This is a treasure, being a collection of the voices of those who have lived in Alaska, from a wide variety of backgrounds, told as though in their own voice. I think as the years go on, this book becomes even more of a valuable resource.
A wonderful compilation of 60 Alaskans. He went to considerable effort to seek broad mix of history of Alaska. I enjoyed his 3 to 4 page stories about each individual who spent their lives living in the State of Alaska.
Although it was informative and covered a broad spectrum of Alaskan society, the Aleuts were missing! There was very little mention of the islands in the book.
As a reference book for Alaskan characters, it lived up to it's dedication, (paraphrasing) For current and future generations of writers.
Thank you, Ron Strickland, for compiling so many transcribed oral histories in one convenient volume. Having lived in AK for lots of years, it felt to me like a fairly representative cross section.
I will be checking this book out from the library again, I'm sure.
