Part of the official history series, but still a very good read. A comprehensive look at the time the Marines were running the battle of Guadalcanal. A very special offer that this book has is that it has break downs for various things to make them clearer for readers not familiar with certain aspects, to include individuals, weapons, uniforms and the like. This additions are very helpful in understanding the whole without being a distraction.
First offensive is a detailed account of the Marine's offensive during the Battle for Guadalcanal during WWII. The victory in the battle for the Allied forces is the turning point of the war. I know very little about the Pacific Theater of Operation, one that I hope to remedy. Although, I probably shouldn't have started with this book, or any specific battle, I am glad I did. This was an interesting, straightforward account of the battle.
The novelist Jack London once famously remarked "If I were king the worst punishment I could inflict on my enemies would be to banish them to the Solomons". It was in this unappetizing group of islands in general, and Guadalcanal in particular that the American Marine forces won their seminal naval battle engaging an unrelenting and suicidal force of Japanese. Under the command of the indefatigable General Alexander Vandegrift, the gritty American forces battled the elements, infectious diseases and a well armed hostile enemy before emerging victorious.
Henry Shaw Jr in this eye opening work chronicles the battle for Guadalcanal in sincere detail. The futility of war is ably balanced by the need to engage in one out of sheer and forced necessity.
First Offensive - Tribute to a gallant set of young men serving their country with their heart on their sleeves and pride in their deeds.
