Asbestos destroys people's lives. Asbestos-related diseases now account for some 400 deaths every year in Scotland, with many more being severly disabled. This text is a history of the unfolding asbestos tragedy in Scotland and contains many interviews.
Ronald (Ronnie) Johnston was born and brought up in Glasgow, and worked in various manual jobs before embarking on an academic career in 2000, eventually becoming a Professor of Social History. His main research interests lie in 19th and 20th British history, with a particular emphasis on the history of work and occupational health. He is the author/co-author of three academic books and over thirty journal articles. In 2011 he left academia to concentrate on independent research and writing. The Red List (under the pen-name James Johnston) is his first novel and draws from his extensive knowledge of the west of Scotland during the period when it gained the title ‘Red Clydeside’. He is currently writing a follow up to the Red List as well as another historical novel set in the north of England.
