This is better than the first volume in this series as it focuses clearly on Long John Silver, who is a more interesting character than any of the other characters in this story. Also, there is a lot of pirate intrigue among the crew as they journey to the Americas.
I still reading this and keep expecting more Black Sails and sure it's not that - of course - but still so great, especially the John Silver sections!!!! The other plots/characters don't take me as much, but with Long John Silver is incredible - the act of him telling stories of Flint to the crew, and then his anger at the end is so much pure perfection!!! That I just loved so much!!!!
Another great volume in this story line. Vol 2 takes place almost entirely aboard ship where silver is in his story telling, mutiny shaping, crew manipulating element. The art remains quite good and the writing is excellent. I found it completely credible that Silver could worm his way into the crew, to lead them with their greed and their fear and to turn them into his crew rather than the captain's.
The Neptune is on it's way across the Atlantic, heading towards the lost city of gold, with Lady Hastings and Long John Silver waiting for the right moment to assume control of the ship. But a flash point of brutality forces Silver's hand leading to mutiny and to the violent takeover of the vessel.
'Neptune' takes the characters and setting from the first album and runs with it, ramping up the tension and atmosphere between the characters, expanding upon the motivations of the characters, mainly Hastings, Silver, Livesy and the ship's captain, with Silver coming to the fore a bit more this time, becoming more likeable. The story by Dorison is very engaging and keeps you gripped throughout, and the art by Lauffray is very atmospheric, bringing a real sense of the violence and darkness of the tale on the high seas.
It's another engrossing read and looking forward to the next album, 'The Emerald Maze'.
Se possibile, è ancora meglio del primo. Profondo, profondissimo e tragico.
[4.3] The story continues onboard the Neptune (surprise), with motivations from all the characters in clash. Same masterful art and dark settings. Heavy focus is on the happenings on the boat and pretty much nothing outside of it, so we lose the sense of traveling and exploration a bit. I’ll be going on a hunt for the rest of the volumes to read it through. I will likely get most other stuff from these creators as well
Xabier Dorison and Mathieu Lauffray are a creative match made in heaven. I fell in love with Silver, the Doc, and the world building, everything. LITERALLY, everything. Dorison really knows how to move a story forward in a creative way and Lauffray is a master at creating evocative, grand landscapes and character designs that really stick! I'm a bit late, but congrats on such a wonderful creation! I always have an eye out for Dorison's and Lauffray's works since LJS🤍
The plot gathers momentum in this second book in the series, where a grim death waits for some. Atmospheric in tone and style, the storytelling and visuals unite to weave a visceral magic, absorbing the head and the heart. Let the adventure continue in Vol.3!
Uma boa continuação. Excelente arte e argumento interessante quanto baste. Fez-me querer ler o próximo livro, mas parece-me que esticaram a corda para justificar o número de volumes. Vamos ver... Venha o próximo.
Much better than the first part. Xavier dorison shows that he is a really good writer, the characters became likeable, mainly John silver himself. My final rating is 7,5/10
Much better pace and focus than the first volume. I find it hard to tell some characters apart so it doesn’t always flow as well as id like. Much more comic in the volume, less narration.
Excellent !
Tension and suspicion simmer as the Neptune sails to South America, on the behest of Lord Byron Hastings who has supposedly found a fabled lost city of gold (not El Dorado). On board, there are tensions a-plenty as Lady Hastings and her piratical accomplices bide their time, waiting for the captain to guide them to the treasure city before taking control. Very dark and violent stuff and the atmospheric art, a real highlight in this series, brings home the awesomeness of the marine surroundings and the fraught atmosphere on board.
A fun and engaging read. The characterisations were good, but did not quite reach excellence (not too much time given to each of them). Lady Hastings and Long John Silver were given the most "screen time" and they carry the story well enough. The fourth part of the series brings in too many fantasy aspects to really keep the interest up for someone focussing on historical fiction. The artwork shines throughout, bringing to us evocative settings and transporting us to another world.
A lot of stories set at sea bore me with the same old tales of storms and doldrums and complaining crews. The second installment of Dorison and Lauffray's Long John Silver avoids that by filling the time with politics and scheming. It's the same tactic that Stevenson used in Treasure Island, but to very different results. Stevenson's adventure story has its moments of darkness, but this is a scarier version with rougher stakes. And of course it looks gorgeous.
This second volume of Dorison and Lauffray's Stevenson-inspired series Long John Silver picks up right where the first volume, Lady Vivian Hastings left off, and delivers another really good chapter in this story. Events happen, and the plot moves Silver and his men both closer and further away from the promise of Guiana-Capac.
Still enjoyable, and I have already started on the third album.
I enjoyed this series of comics, which is a re-visitation on the Treasure Island character, Long John Silver. However, while it was quite pleasurable to read, I found that it fell short of provoking the same fascination and sense of wonder that I felt when I first read Treasure Island or when I consider pirates stories. Maybe it was too predictable.
Gaze at Lauffray's artwork on the cover and marvel at the contents too. This second title in the series takes us on board the "Neptune" as we follow the machinations of a British Officer, a Lady, a Doctor and of course the Pirates as they head to the Amazon. Brilliant stuff - not a superhero in sight!
