David Pogue, Yale '85, is the weekly personal-technology columnist for the New York Times and an Emmy award-winning tech correspondent for CBS News. His funny tech videos appear weekly on CNBC. And with 3 million books in print, he is also one of the world's bestselling how- to authors. He wrote or co-wrote seven books in the "For Dummies" series (including Macs, Magic, Opera, and Classical Music). In 1999, he launched his own series of amusing, practical, and user-friendly computer books called Missing Manuals, which now includes 100 titles.

David and his wife, Jennifer Pogue, MD, live in Connecticut with their three young children.

As a sixth grader suffering from home sickness each night at sleep-away science camp, to quell my tears I read its nearly 1000 pages cover to cover. Yes, it was the only book I brought as it barely fit in my backpack. It was published alongside either a diskette or a cd-rom full of shareware. I used every last file. Alongside monthly issues of Macworld, this was THE seminal book that primed me for an unexpected (although perhaps inevitable) career path.

Our cabin did not win any awards for lights out and quietest, but David Pogue’s review of every Mac produced quieted my sad lonely heartsick mind.

I really should have figured out how to buy Apple stock.

This is a good edition if you are interested in the classic MacOS 9 systems and earlier. It was released just before OS X started public releases, so OS X isn't covered much. If you are interested in any of the OS X operating systems you'll want a newer edition, otherwise this is a great resource for classic Macs.
