The Others #12

Howl at the Moon

Rate this book
Noah Baker never wanted to betray The Others. But if his military commanders want him to covertly investigate a Lupine scientist—whose extraordinary research on sensory perception in werewolves could be used to develop werewolf-sharp senses in human soldiers—Noah must oblige. Even if it means deceiving the woman he desires the most.

Samantha Carstairs is the personal assistant to the Alpha of the Silverback Clan, and as best friend to the Lupine community's most brilliant scientist, she is privy to its most dangerous secret. Noah knows that Sam will never leak the scientific research…so he must find another way to get it, while keeping Sam close. But someone else is after Sam's secret. Who is the other spy infiltrating The Others? If their genetic secrets get into the wrong hands, all hell could break loose. Now Noah's true loyalty is put to the test as he fights to protect The Others—and his beloved Sam—and find the imposter…before it's too late.

Born and raised in coastal New England, Christine Warren lived in the South and the Mid-Atlantic before hopping to the other side of the country to take up the life of a transplant in the Pacific Northwest. She completely bypassed those states in the middle due to her landlocking phobia. Hmm, need to research a scientific term for that...

When not scrambling frantically to complete her latest writing project, Christine spends most of her time as a crazy animal lady, hanging out with her dog Levi (he’s the one with the hair) and pretending to train him to have some manners. She also hangs out with her horse, Cal—a thoroughbred with a craving for strawberry licorice twists—her goddog, Merlin; and her best friend, fellow author Hannah Murray. In addition to playing with her pets, Christine’s hobbies include identifying dog breeds from photos of their underbellies, appreciating fine and not-so-fine wines, shopping for the perfect pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, and most of all reading things someone else had to agonize over.

She enjoys hearing from readers and can be reached via email sent to Christine@christinewarren.net or by postal mail to Christine Warren, PO Box 871900, Vancouver, WA 98687-1900.

"A WOOOOOOOOO"

The fourth book of the Others series, is right up there with the rest in the series. The Others are vampires, werewolves and all things that go bump in the night or hang out in the day. Humans now know of the Others existence and the coming out was no walk in the park (check previous books for the actual event). Let’s just say humans are a bit wary of things that are stronger and faster than them.

This one is about Noah and Sam who I met previously in the third book and you know there was going to be some trouble ahead for the human man and the very lupine woman. Sam is fighting her desire for Noah and ignoring what her heart and her wolf is telling her, this man might be her mate and she had no plans for a mate and to make things worst he’s a human and cocky as hell. Sam is content to be by herself and with her pack and he just came in and made an uncomplicated life very complicated. What’s a wolf to do, how about ripping said man clothes of and howling at the moon together. In that case things might be looking up for Sam.

Noah has his own agenda as to why he is visiting the pack and is hanging with the others. They think he’s here to recruit some of the pack members to the army but instead he’s on a mission to find out about a pack doctor who is doing research on the lupine gene and might have discovered how to mix it with human genes. This makes it a hot commodity; because all the answers will be in that research and human sickness might one day become extinct. He hates lying because he considers these people his friends and plus he seems to be falling for Sam and if she finds out he’s been lying all this time there goes his intestines.

So with the army we know that they want to build stronger soldiers and with this new finding it was just a matter of time before some crazy jumped on started with their own experiments. Oblivious to all this Noah thought his job was just to gather information and report his finding but his boss has other ideas and might be ahead with mixing human and Other DNA. So it’s now up to Sam and Noah and their group of shapeshifting and witch friends to blow this before all others end up in danger because of their abilities.

This was a fast paced read filled with excitement and fun, plus we had the whole crew of previous characters from other books in the series, and let’s just say there was never a dull moment. This series is one of the best for me and I can’t wait to continue. On the PL scale (Pants losing) it’s about a 2.5 not as hot as the others but still had some sizzle.

Get your fantasy fix here, Another sizzling paranoramal romance from Christine Warren!

Noah's latest mission has put him between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Noah's special ops `spook squad' background along with his sister's marriage to a demon has given Noah an `in' into the world of the Others - supernatural races such as fae, demons, shapeshifters and vampires. This time instead of blowing things up, it's his job to lie to and spy on the Silverback pack Noah has come to like and respect. Noah hates being the wolf in sheep's clothing. Truth is important to Noah and he's been feeling like a heel. The only upside is his cover has given Noah the opportunity to share an office with sexy shifter Samantha. Ever since Noah got up close and personal with Samantha when trying to rescue his sister, he can't think of anything but wanting to be that close to her again - preferably sans clothing. Sam feels the same draw, Noah drives her crazy and she can't think straight when he's around. The sight of all that gorgeous man in uniform and not to mention his masculine spicy scent has gotten Sam panting. Sam instinctively knows that Noah is more than alpha enough to handle whatever her wolf can dish out. But even as Noah and Sam connect on the most primal level and discover a soul-deep connection that is so much more than lust, Noah knows that having to lie to Sam is going to come back and bite him. He just doesn't realize that Sam will think he's been playing her as part of his mission and that he just may loose that one woman that holds his heart and soul.

This is one of my favorite series. Warren manages to deliver a great steamy romance, combined with misadventures, larger plots and politics as humans rail at the loss of their position at the top of the food chain now that the Others are out of the closet. Warren's world is not unique, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. One of the the fun elements of the series, Warren has created a group of great supporting characters that carry through all the books. Samantha and Noah were side characters from previous books, and here they finally get their chance to sizzle.

If you haven't read the rest of Warren's mainstream Other's books, lucky you - you're in for a treat. Otherwise, you'll just have to wait for June with the rest of us for you next fantasy fix.

Book 4 of The Others series and very enjoyable. I liked the interaction between Samantha and Noah. I liked that he was a spy and trying to steal secrets from the Silverback clan as part of his job with the Army in the Paranormal Special Ops. And then he had to make a tough choice between his love and his career. (Du - he chose the girl. The book would be mighty short if he hadn't. Not to mention the sex scenes would have been awkward).

A good series.

This book was just so bland. The set-up was interesting but then it never really led anywhere. I spent quite a lot of time annoyed at the TSTL friend of the heroine. For a genius, she sure was a ridiculously stupid individual. The romance was pretty much non-existent and the conflict was defused way too quickly and easily. Overall, the whole story was very blah and if had been my introduction to this author or the series, I wouldn't be interested in reading more.

"Right now, there were three major truths in his world. The first was that he loved Samantha Cartairs. The second was that he would do whatever it took to make her listen to him, and the third was that he was willing to do whatever it took to make her forgive him, whether that involved groveling, begging, pleding, or public acts of humiliation. He didn't care. No matter what it required, he would win his woman back."

"She smiled at him, and his heart nearly stopped. Gods, he hadn't even realized it until then, but if she'd never smailed at him again, he'd have died. The expression had become like oxygen to him, a non-negotiable necessity."

พูดตามตรงนะ แม็กซ์แทบไม่เชื่อเลยว่า คนที่เขียนเรื่องอย่าง She's no fairie princess และเล่มนี้ Howl at the moon จะเป็นคนเดียวกับที่เขียนเรื่อง Wolf at the door และ The Demon you know แต่มันก็เป็นไปแล้ว และถ้าแม็กซ์เป็นคนเชื่อในทฤษฎีสมคบคิด แม็กซ์ก็คงบอกว่าคริสตีน วอร์เรนมีสองคนผลัดกันเขียนคนละเล่ม

สำหรับเล่มนี้ เอาไปเลยค่ะที่ 83

How at the Moon
2 Stars

The last thing Noah Baker wants is to betray the Others, but the military brass has tasked him with locating a lupine scientist, Annie Cryer. Noah's problems are compounded by his attraction to Samantha Carstairs, the Silverback Alpha's administrative assistant and Annie's best friend. When Annie disappears along with her ground-breaking research, Noah and Sam will have to put aside their differences to save her and the rest of the Others.

Series note: There are references to previous stories and characters. Moreover, Noah and Sam first meet in book #11.

Once again, this installment in The Others is less than stellar. The connection between Noah and Sam has such potential, yet it never fully materializes. While Noah's need to keep his mission secret from Sam is reasonable given the circumstances, it still puts a damper on their romance. A hero who consistently lies to the heroine is not sexy, and Noah's internal angst over this is repetitive.

The lackluster romance is not helped by the bland and uninteresting suspense plot. For a brilliant scientist, Annie is TSTL. Her decisions make no sense, and she only has herself to blame for the pickle she finds herself in. That said, the action scenes at the end are good.

Overall, the last couple of books in the series have been disappointing. The next focuses on completely new characters in a new setting, which simply does not interest me. Ava's book is the one that follows, so I will read that one next.

Bought this book for $1.59 at my favorite used bookstore. Found it in clearance, figured it was worth the price, brought it home, cracked it open. Didn't realize until I went on good reads that the reason it was in clearance was that it was NUMBER TWELVE in a series that the book store had no chance of getting the first eleven books for.

This is not the first time this has happened for me when it comes to paranormal romance. I fall for it every time.

Like usual, I decided to read it anyway with the assumption that I'd be lost and confused the whole way but maybe there'd be some fun little moments somewhere.

But alas, I was not lost nor was I confused. By page 50 I had made the decision to check and see if the earlier books were obtainable on Kindle where I could have instant one-click gratification 11 times in a row. By page 150 I had actually looked on Kindle for the series and acknowledged that $7.99 a pop for instant gratification would happen until I sold all of the textboos I need for two more weeks.

I do have a huge eye glued to that Every Witch Way book (it's something like that I swear) which is only 1.99.

But I digress.

The book was great. I loved how easy it was to get immersed in the story, and how I wasn't lost and confused and trying to catch up with previous canons or references from earlier books. If anything, I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed the romantic clash between Sam and Noah, since I am one of those special snowflake women who normally go "eeew dominant male in a uniform this is trash and I'm not reading I need to go take a shower to wash this nastiness off me." I kinda liked Noah.

My main complaint was the ending. And no, I don't mean what happens in the ending. It just wasn't tied up. There were loose ends. Like I get that the story is about Sam and Noah, but without giving anything away, HOW CAN YOU JUST END A STORY IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT SCENE WITH PEOPLE STILL WAVING GUNS AROUND AND UNCONSCIOUS CHARACTERS AND THEN NOT EVEN PUT IN THE EPILOGUE WHO LIVES OR WHO DIES OR WHO WRANGLED THE FINAL WEAPON AWAY WHAT THE FLYING FUCK?!?

And I admit that I am unfamiliar with this series and for all I know all of that good stuf might be omitted so that it can be picked up in the next book. But seriously. I am peeved. I did not get, as my high school English teacher called it, the best dessert imaginable. That conclusion needs revision with a red pen AND a yellow highlighter. Same with the epilogue.

And now, with mixed emotions aplenty, I'm off to go read Warren's free Kindle book.

This book continues on from the previous Others books, and is centred around Samantha, friend and beta to the Silverbacks Alpha and Noah, Abby's (from The Demon You Know) brother. Although you don't need to read these books in order as they are all very much self contained. But I always prefer to read in order anyway.

Despite Noahs better judgement, he is sent undercover to the Silverback pack to try and find covertly investigate a Lupine scientist who is looking at the Lupine genome. This also gives him the chance to get closer to Samantha, who he hasn't been able to get out of his mind since he met her 6 months earlier. The scientist the Noah is sent to investigate just happens to be Sams best friend. As Sam and Noah get closer and things get deeper between them, and Noah's orders start becoming suspicious it gets harder for him to tell the truth.

This is a good installment in the series, it shows more consequences of the Unveiling and also allows you to see other characters from the previous books.

Having met Noah and Sam in previous books you already have an idea of thier character, and it carries on into this book. Noah is a solid hero and although he is human, he has many Lupine traits, such as possesiveness, the drive to protect those he loves and loyalty. You can really see his conflict between doing his orders and his loyalty to his Other friends. Sam is also a likeable heroine, she is strong, infact stronger then Noah, her being a Lupine and all, smart and funny.

Like all Christine Warrens books, it has her stamp of humourous writing and hot sex scenes, some being slightly more explicit then most, without it going over the top.

I would recommend this book if you have read all the other Others books and would definately recommend people give the first one a try if they haven't as they are good, lighthearted, and fun reads.

Liked this book more than the last one I read, where the heroine annoyed me. Samantha was a good heroine and Noah was a good hero. The book was good but really Noah got off way easy all things considered. Someone needs to let CW know that groveling is not just good sex. While it definitely helps the hero needs to really suffer first. Otherwise liked it.

This is Noah and Samantha's story. Annie Cryer is working the Lupine genome and discovers sum things that would be better off left alone. Noah is working a secret mission that has him feeling guilty and like the whole thing is going to go South for the winter.

As always Ms. Warren writes with a little humor, a little suspense and some very steamy sex. Noah and Sam can't keep their hands off each other. I enjoyed both characters every much and they will make a nice addition to the growing group. It was also nice to see other characters from previous and catch up with what is going on in their lives.

This story shows that the government can't keep their hands to themselves. If they can't get their way they will steal because they deserve it more than the average person. I was glad to see that their little plan was never allowed to come to fruition. I am also glad that the head of this mess was dealt with in such a way he won't cause anymore trouble.

This is a enjoyable story and I nice addition to the series. If you have liked the previous books you will enjoy this one.

I actually didn't want to read this one...I liked Noah Baker in the Demon You Know, and I didn't want to see him play the part of the guy who betrays the characters we already know and love. BUT he was soo hot and soo likable that it made this my favorite book in the series yet :) now I'm super excited to continue the series

The road to hell was paved with good intentions. Noah is a true solider. He believes in serving his country but this time there is something fishy going on.1st his CO hashim spying on his friends even though he is a demolations expert and then the CO is supper impatient. To top it off Noah can't fight his attraction to Sam even though he is spying on her friends and family.

Just love this series, Noah, a human in the army and i he was sent to look into the werewolf genes so the government can create the same scents that the were have. He never thought he could fall for the P.A. to the alpha, Samantha Carstairs. So now that he feels for a were he thinks his mission is a betrayal to the pack and to his feelings for Sam.

I am starting to get into the paranormal "shifters" books and this one has lots . . . there's a werejaguar, werewolves, demons, a witch and more! Add a couple of humans to the mix along with members of the military and stolen medical research and you have the key ingredients for a great thriller!

I thought this was the weakest book so far of the series. We met Noah and Sam in the previous books and I had great expectations about their story. However, I thought there was just too much repetitive, introspective dialogues by both of them even though the storyline was pretty interesting.

it was ok but i had issues with the story line.

mainly the part where important and valuable genetic information is stolen from a lab that could devastate the lupine race if it got out and was used. aaaaand they all decide to just go and sleep it off and wait til morning before continuing the search to retrieve that supposedly life or death info! so its no surprise when the next day they find the bad guys have moved on from their known safe house. AND have managed to kidnap the lab scientist too. the stupidity of that pissed me off.

as did how deeply hurt samantha was to discover noahs betrayal... but OF COURSE she welcomes him back into her bed because he's sexually irresistible. *rolls eyes*. why do women in romance novels never get to stay angry when their anger is justified? why do they always cave and instantly take the guy back when he starts touching her? if i'm that hurt and angry, the guy ain't getting his hands anywhere near me. and him grabbing me and forcibly holding me to him would send me into full on angry panic mode, not 'instantly forgive everything' mode.

"has anyone ever told you that you're a hard woman to get to know?"
"absolutely not. i'm an open book."
"written in invisible ink."

"the emotion she had felt had more to do with expecting love than actually finding it."

"on his team, standard procedure included having a Plan B, just in case something went wrong. an 'oh, shit!' option. Plan C was the final backup. the 'aw fuck!' last resort."

"i was never much good at following the rules."
"now might be a very good time for you to learn."
"eh, i'm not that ambitious."

Betrayal All Around!

Samantha Carstairs is Graham Winters Personal Assistant & was in the previous book when she 1st met Noah Baker, Abby’s brother. She has felt an attraction to him since then.

Noah has also felt an attraction to Sam since he 1st met her when he tried to rescue his sister Abby as he thought that they had kidnapped her & that was 6 months ago.

In this book the two of them get together but also somethings that happen in this book also has them almost breaking up; as she felt that he had played her to get some information about another pack member.

There is betrayal all around not only by Noah but also to Noah; Noah was sent by a General to spy on the pack to find out if they knew of a way to give humans Other DNA & although Noah was leery at 1st he did it anyway as it was an order/assignment.

This book has lots of sex scenes & excitement & it was a very good book; but you will have to read it to find out what all happens in this book.

It was smart to have the MC's already know each other, it meant it didn't seem unrealistic or that they rushed into anything too quickly. But this bk still didn't really hold my attention for long, the MC's & story just weren't interesting or realistic (ie seemingly natural reactions, dialogue etc of characters, despite most of them being non-human) enough, & there was too much useless/unproductive, REPETITIVE & thus tiresome, angst.

I have to confess, right from the beginning I found this series to be disappointingly average. I think it's a stylistic issue. The author spends an awful lot of time telling instead of showing and that is frustrating to me. This book was not exception.

The premise is that Noah, a human soldier in the US army, has been charged with the task of attaining scientific secrets from his friends in the Other community--specifically the werewolves. He lies and says he's recruiting for a new team, and the Others are eager to help him with this task. In his 'recruitment' effort he ends up sharing an office with Sam, personal assistant to the pack's alpha and woman who Noah has had a thing for from the time they met. Sam just happens to be the best friend of the scientist who's research the military is after. When Sam and Noah become involve, and his lies come undone, Sam must deal with her feelings and questions of whether or not what they share is real.

Now, unlike with some of the previous books in this series I can honestly say that I liked both main characters. Sam is pretty much a place holder with no notable memorable personality traits, but that's fine because at least she's not annoying. Noah shows at least superficial character development, and his personality is very likeable. He's loyal, tough, and loving. As is typical of Warren the premise is very interesting, even if the execution is sloppy.

I have several issues with this book, mainly surrounding the plot. Now, I haven't looked ahead in the series to see if Annie the scientist eventually does get her own book and I don't really care. I just seriously have to question why a book who's main plot-line surrounded her genetic research was not actually about her. She makes few actual appearances and there are no scenes from her point of view. So we are told that this research exists and that its a problem, that Annie is in trouble because of it. But that conflict is just kind of there and most of the action takes place "off screen" and the reader is told about it after the fact. I have a sneaking suspicion that the author either didn't want to go into the science/science fiction details or doesn't know enough about genetics to b.s. something halfway reasonable. But if that's the case, she should have picked another conflict, one that actually took place directly between the couple of interest. I felt like I was reading about secondary characters rather then central all important protagonists.

Will I continue with this series? Yes, eventually. I really do like some of the characters and, as previously stated the premises are usually decent. I just hope for something more impressive in the future.

You know, for an elite member of the spook squad, Noah was kinda...dumb there. He was...uneasy about his assignment, so why didn't he have a chat with Graham and apprise him of it? Also, why didn't he get his team members to follow when they went after Annie.

Annie, for a brilliant scientist, was downright stupid. What did she THINK would happen if she isolated those genes? And to do this at a university lab?!?! ==facepalm.

Our h seemed to be the smartest one of the bunch, although her letting her cousin use her as a guinea pig made her less than genius material (particularly since neither of these ladies thought to inform the alpha)

As an aside, once a signal is isolated on a cell phone, its use or lack thereof is irrelevant. So that bit about the non-secure phone not being used to call for help was a bit lame - the only way his team wouldn't be able to locate him would be if it were destroyed.

And, in spite of the fact that I mostly liked this one, I'm a little (?) tired of the Lupines. There are...how many flavors of Others? And over half the books feature a wolf. The exceptions have been... fae/human, changeling/human, guardian/human, tiger/tiger, demon/human, and vampire/human.

This is one of the stories of the later Other series by Christine Warren. This means it has more story, not as much of the bedroom scenes. This book opens with Samantha with her friend talking about the experiment that the friend is doing. As she is muttering about geeky friends her boss and alpha Graham tells her of a “special” project that he is putting her on. She is going to work with the human military guy, Noah. Noah has always made her twitchy and uncomfortable, but put up with it because her alpha requested. Noah has his orders from the military, but knows what the tension between himself and Sam is. When they finally come together it is electric and pulls him in more than one direction. Eventually he makes his choice and by the end of the story he has quit the project and has taken Sam for his own. The journey is interesting and the tension is there. I would recommend reading this after the other books, as it doesn’t introduce everything and characters are already established. It is good to see how the series moves forward.

Samantha is the PA to the Alpha of the Silverback Clan and her best friend is the clan's most brilliant researcher. Noah needs to get some information, whether he wants to or not, his military orders are to get it... His sister is a mate in the clan and so he's allowed access not allowed to most humans. Sam's friend Annie, has a mole in her department, and her most recent research discovery is information that people will pay mega bucks for and will also kill for. Annie tells Sam that she needs a few more days before telling the Alpha what her discovery it, but she also slips something to Sam and tells her to hide it. Sam, not knowing what she's been given, puts it in the most secure place that she can think of. And so begins a case of who's who and working for whom and where is safety? It gets tangled, complicated and of course comes out in the end, but enjoy your read in the meantime.

Someone belonging to The Others is any paranormal entity that isn't fully human...werewolf, vampire, fae. Samantha Carstairs, is a high-ranking werewolf of the Pack. Annie Cryer is a Pack scientist researching the biological differences between werewolves and human. Noah Baker is a US government employee who is sent to infiltrate the Pack and find out what Annie has been able to learn. Also, he is to steal her research in order to keep it from the hands of terrorists...or so he thought.

As Samantha and Noah are falling in love, Noah is having a crisis of conscious and second guessing his military orders. Someone, not Other but not human either, steals Annie's research but it isn't Noah. The rush is on to find these people before the reseach ends up in the wrong hands.

Another great installment in The Others series.

You don’t need to read the previous books but it does help as the story flows and overlaps.
Both Samantha and Noah are repeat characters, especially Sam.
Enjoyed this but thought Annie, (Sam’s best friend) the genius scientist, came across as silly.
Noah is lying to the pride, which is not a clever thing to do. He is undercover, getting information for his General. You can see from the start it is not believable or logical what he is supposed to be doing.
Things get extremely difficult for Noah when his feelings for Sam come into play.
Sam is happy to have finally met her mate and is devastated when she learns the truth.
This all plays out as one expects with a corrupt government man wanting to be god and make special soldiers.
Read years ago but I tend to only reread my favourites in this series.
I now own the complete Ebook box set and pick and choose which ones I read.

Howl at the Moon is an excellent story with characters caught up in a plot that could undo the Others. Noah Baker is human, a soldier, and the brother of Abby Baker, now married to the sun demon, Rule. In a previous book, Noah met Samantha Carstairs and fell both in lust and in love with the werewolf. She's trying to protect her best friend, a geneticist, and Noah's been assigned to find out Annie's secrets--which means he'll have to betray the pack and Others he's come to consider friends. This action is nonstop and the character arcs intriguing. I'm glad I stuck with the series long enough to get to this book.

This story was better than some of the others. I think I am finding that I prefer the shifter stories in this series. So with that said, Sam is a pretty straight forward, solid head on her shoulders Werewolf. She initially fights her attraction to Noah because he is human. Before long she realizes he is her mate and enbraces a future with him. Things are not all as they seem though. Noah is on a secret mission, that could screw up everything with Sam. Along with that story was have the "super genius" Annie and her research. This nonsense with her makes me think she is no genius and really more of an idiot. Anyway the romance is pretty good, the sexy times are of course hot and the story is engaging. So all in all another win. Walk on the Wild Side is next.
