Her sister was the first audience for adventure stories inspired by "Ivanhoe" (knights in armour) "Robin Hood" (rogues) and Star Trek (where no man has gone before). Through each step in Helen's life - travelling, a university degree in languages, marriage, various administration jobs - the stories kept coming.
When her two sons got a little older, she decided the moment for a career change had arrived at last. The "breakthrough" came when Helen won the Clendon Award for best unpublished romance manuscript. Harlequin bought her story and she now writes colourful historical stories for their mainstream romance imprint HQN Books.
Helen’s passion for colorful history provides the perfect backdrop for the powerful emotion in her writing. All About Romance nominated her as a Desert Isle Keeper and she recently finalled in the Australian Romantic Book of the Year Award. The Historical Romance Writers website called her work both emotional and memorable, “with attention to historical detail that brings the past to life in a way only Helen Kirkman can”.
Helen’s early life was spent in England near the ancient walled city of Chester. She now lives in New Zealand and still travels (writing provides the perfect excuse!). She recently spent some time back in Britain, where she visited a Viking battle site, spent fascinated hours at the British Museum and ate too many pub lunches. She fell in love with the vibrancy of New York on the way home.

Serie in crescendo, anche grazie al fatto che il primo volume ci ha introdotto nell’epoca (871 dC, sotto il regno di Alfredo il Grande, mentre il regno inglese del Wessex è stretto nella morsa delle grandi invasioni scandinave).
Immaginate Vikings e immaginate che qui i vichinghi siano tutti crudeli, senza onore, brutali, quasi sempre ubriachi, avidi e pazzi (questa è un po’ la descrizione dei cattivi della serie); probabilmente la popolazione invasa li vedeva proprio cosi.
Il nobile guerriero dell’Anglia, Berg, ha dovuto assistere a sconfitte e al martirio del suo re Edmund, finendo anche lui torturato e sfregiato. Da allora medita vendetta, finché non incontra una giovane trattata come bottino di guerra e costretta a divenire l’amante di un capo vichingo per far risparmiare i propri familiari.
Due personaggi parecchio segnati, nonché rassegnati al fatalismo di una vita di dolore e miseria, che trovano un riscatto reciproco.
Ambientazione ben descritta e credibile, storia avventurosa; punti bonus per la sorella che-voleva-combattere di Berg e per Chad, l’adorabile bimbo fan dei porcellini 🐷.

Bentornate, Fenici!
Siamo arrivati al secondo libro di questa autrice e finalmente entriamo nel vivo della vicenda. Se il primo è stato lento, questo è più “friccicariello”. Edmund ed Elgiva sono i nomi che dovete ricordare, ma per la storia sono Berg ed Elene.
Elene ha dovuto subito imparare a combattere e a sopravvivere contro un destino avverso in un’epoca dove le donne contavano poco o niente. È diventata, non per sua scelta, la puttana del capo danese Kraka, a sua volta al servizio di re Ivar durante le conquiste dei territori che poi formeranno l’Inghilterra. E c’è un motivo.
Berg, o Edmud, principe dell’Anglia orientale, ora è un guerriero che la vita ha forgiato e durante un attacco rimane colpito dalla “valchiria” Elene quando la vede e sì, i due sono fortemente attratti.
C’è un segreto che li lega, un segreto sepolto nel passato, ma nel presente la minaccia dei Vichinghi incombe.
Ritroveremo anche i personaggi del primo libro, Ash e Gemma, e i due volumi possono essere letti come libri a sé.
Finalmente un libro un pelino più ritmico! Ho trovato il primo lento ma questo ha catturato subito la mia attenzione. Entrambi i protagonisti sono spezzati e cercano conforto l’uno nelle braccia dell’altro. Ho amato particolarmente Judith, la sorella di Berg, una guerriera che vorrebbe combattere ma le è precluso. Spero che sia lei la protagonista del prossimo libro.
Non vi deluderà.

History texts mainly neglect to tell about the lives of the people caught up in the events they so matter-of-factly describe. We read such words as war, pillage, plunder, murder, kidnapping, and we perhaps understand them on a surface level only. Kirkman's Destiny tells of two young lives who are caught up in the Viking invasions of England in the late ninth century - their childhood betrothal torn apart, Lady Elene kidnapped and raped and carrying the child of the Viking raider Kraka, Edmund, now known as Berg, scarred and homeless and seeking vengeance. This is a dark romance, full of anger and confusion and loss and pain - it is not typical fare for most romance readers. I, however, am solidly hooked on the series, and eagerly await to read the next.
