Doctrinal Commentary on the Pearl of Great Price / by Hyrum L. Andrus

Rate this book
The contributions of the Pearl of Great Price to our understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ are vital but perhaps not well known. The shortest of the standard works, it covers a broad range of doctrine and includes insights that are both clear and profound. Among the many doctrinal subjects treated in this volume are the nature of God, man's pre-mortal existence, the creation of the earth, the fall of Adam, the Atonement of Christ, and the establishment of Zion in Enoch's day and its relationship to the last days. This volume is a wonderful resource for all who seek a fuller understanding of the gospel through the ages.

Took a class from Andrus at BYU, a few things I question the pure doctrine... good reference however.

WOW! I'm so amazed. I wonder about some of the things in this book, but because of the references given I believe it is correct. I've checked many if the references and I believe them to be correct. I've had this book for many years and only read bits of it. Now that we're studying the Pearl of Great Price my interest in reading it has been renewed. Absolutely amazing. I'm learning things that I never would have imagined on own. Wonderful read. I recommend it to those who have an understanding of the gospel, a strong testimony that they want strengthened and want to better understand the plan. Not for a gospel beginner though.

I took a religion course that used this book as a textbook for the class about 1969 or 1970, taught by Hyrum L. Andrus, himself. I found the doctrines, principles, and applications presented in the book to be well researched and doctrinally sound within the approved teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). Over the years since, I have taught from the book and the principles of the Gospel have helped explain many other precepts. I have always kept the textbook. Recently, I started re-reading it. Fantastic book. As informative and eye-opening as it was 45 years ago.

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. It is a general discussion of gospel principles but not really of the Pearl of Great Price. I believe other standard works receive more citations than anything in the PGP. I wasn't expecting a verse by verse commentary (I've seen verse by verse commentaries that exhibit the same issues I've just mentioned) but I was hoping for a closer reading.
