Award-winning author Eve Bunting writes about the love between mama and baby...
"Once there was a little brown puppy who loved his mama very much. So he got the the best present he could find--a big, beautiful bone...." A little brown puppy, a little baby turtle, a snowy white kitten, and other baby animal friends...each finds a present for Mama, which the little one delivers with a sweet little rhyme such "This bone was very hard to get./It's from a dinosaur, I bet." And each mama demonstrates her appreciation and her love. "I love the bone, my little brown puppy. And I love you," Mama says.
Anne Evelyn Bunting, better known as Eve Bunting, is an author with more than 250 books. Her books are diverse in age groups, from picture books to chapter books, and topic, ranging from Thanksgiving to riots in Los Angeles. Eve Bunting has won several awards for her works.
Bunting went to school in Ireland and grew up with storytelling. In Ireland, “There used to be Shanachies… the shanachie was a storyteller who went from house to house telling his tales of ghosts and fairies, of old Irish heroes and battles still to be won. Maybe I’m a bit of a Shanchie myself, telling stories to anyone who will listen.” This storytelling began as an inspiration for Bunting and continues with her work.
In 1958, Bunting moved to the United States with her husband and three children. A few years later, Bunting enrolled in a community college writing course. She felt the desire to write about her heritage. Bunting has taught writing classes at UCLA. She now lives in Pasadena, California.
This book reminds me of being in school trying to make a gift for my mom on Mother's Day or Valentine's Day. It was so exciting anticipating the response of love from my mother, just like these baby animals. I do remember making a vase, ashtray, plenty of cards and written poems for my mom. She would always give me a big hug and tell me thanks. I was happy knowing that she was happy.
A perfect book to share right before Mother’s Day, Eve Bunting’s text and Melissa Sweet’s beautiful watercolor illustrations combine to make this board book treat for mother and child to share. When Little Brown Puppy brings a present to his mama, other animals soon follow suit providing gifts to their mothers. At the end of the book, a young boy gives his mother the best gift from a child, a kiss and a hug, plus another surprise “treat”. Recommended for early childhood libraries.
In this adorable board book written in rhyming text by one of my favorite children's authors, Little Brown Puppy shows his love for his mother with a juicy bone. Naturally, she loves the gift, and when he shares what he did with his friends, each of them decides to follow his lead. Some of the animals make gifts while others search hard to find the right present. The final scene shows a boy who presents his mother with something he loves dearly--his own "very special bug" (unpaginated). His mother smiles contentedly and gives him a hug while holding this present. Parents will probably enjoy this one more than youngsters since some of the gifts are not likely to be all that appealing to their recipients. As I read this one, I smiled to think of some of the "treasures" my own brother and I gave to our own parents, who always seemed to open those packages with such delight. What a sweet but also sentimental story this is, and what a great example that puppy has provided for others about giving rather than receiving!
This book is full of emotions. It shares the strong bong of a mother's love for her child. The children will enjoy it and it is age appropriate for all.
Cute story of a chain reaction of one little puppy's love for his mother and all his friends then follow suit with giving cute gifts for their mothers. Quick read, cute for Mother's Day!
