Biosociology is an emerging paradigm seeking to understand human behavior by integrating relevant insights from the natural sciences into traditional sociological thinking. Biosociology posits no ultimate causes of human behavior, rather it seeks to understand how biological factors interact with other factors to produce observed behavior. The book presents a brief introduction to biophysical systems that are important to the understanding of human behavior - genetics, neurophysiology, and the autonomic and endocrine systems. These systems are explored in the contexts of sociological importance, such as socialization, learning, gender roles, gender differences, sexuality, the family, deviance, and criminality.
This is a good book from years ago that the author has since followed up on. I wanted to give this a look since the more recent one is much more expensive, and also out of historical interest.
My current hobbyhorse is facial development, so what really stuck out to me were references to Israel Ehrenberg's neoteny disinformation. Historically, and today there are a lot of lies embedded in the research and thinking about facial development that are probably only rivaled by the ones in psychometrics. The skull is a confederacy of bones that are subject to change beyond what anyone is authorized to say, and that includes the possibility of rectifying / preventing "neoteny" which is more properly seen as deflated skulls / craniofacial dystrophy. Sadly, this hoax is something that benefits both sides of the aisle. To the left it teaches evolution, justification for post-scarcity anarchisms etc. On the right it allows for people to shill for Ayn Rand and Ronald Reagan in rejection of the "lack of responsibility" being taken by those destroyed by extractive + retractive orthodontics among other things. As a matter of fact, the most extreme case of craniofacial dystrophy is just the opposite end of the continuum of mandibular prognathism.
This prognathism supports the development along deviant pathways by affording the conditions for the "over-engineering" of properly developed bodies to be actualized. This excess to capitalize upon supports the development along deviant pathways in the obvious sense (i.e. oxygenation) and also due to the more desirable bundles of personal experiential effects of crime. Active crime can't be engaging if you can't even breathe while adopting a coping forward head posture at rest. Lombroso was right lifetimes before this will be an accepted truth. It is undeniable.
Further: this book is in continuity with the author's other works in that he has always accepted honest variables in place of nonsense ones like multiple intelligences. He accepts the full truth of heritability of intelligence and personality. Promotes RA Gordon, Linda Gottfredson, and other people who've been defamed since well before I was born. For that, this is worth a look, since it's an effort to bring in honest realities to a field that is so wrong it doesn't even allow for responsibility for immoralities to be placed on individuals to justify punishment - which is the whole point of the criminal justice system. The conditionally determined realities of gene expression, as well as the realities of the other levels of biological organization afford a sound basis to build social sciences free of arbitrariness. Worship of gnomic will won't get anybody anywhere, and the evils of that are evident in society today as is made clear by recent news stories.
Check it out, or the more recent one that I'll probably be ordering sometime soon
