Lieselotte #2

Millie in the Snow

Rate this book
Millie loves being a mail cow even more than she used to love scaring the mail carrier. And helping him deliver the town's holiday presents is the highlight of her winter. She does such a good job that the mail carrier trusts Millie to deliver his gifts to everyone on the farm. But when she gets lost on her way back, Millie wonders if she'll ever make it home to deliver the rest of the gifts. Luckily, the farm was right beneath her nose-and the snow-the whole time. Now if only those presents could make it to their rightful owners . . . and in one piece. This heartwarming story will hit home with any kid who's ever been lost-or only thought she was-and will keep the laughs coming as readers enjoy the silly illustrations of Millie and her farmyard friends.

Krowa Matylda to moja ziomalka.

Genius books for kids. Even fun for me to see all the illustrations. One of the rare books with such a goodnatured content and marvelous illustrations.

I loved returning to Millie's adventures. I knew the presents would get mixed up and was excited to see who "got" what and how they used it. (Hilarious, by the way.) But there were a few pages that I was a bit confused with. I wasn't sure exactly how to follow the action occurring. (Those rule this out as a storytime option for me.) A few spots of humor that school-age would love. Preschool might if they get the jokes. Adults may roll their eyes and try not to smile (like I did). Not as great as the original Millie, but still very fun and I think there should be more.

12/17/13 Some parts over the kids' heads (like the farmer and the tongue of the beast). And I had to point out who got which gift at the end, which helped them see the humor there. It was still a more interesting story than other books I was getting a hold of.

12/10/14 Still over some of their heads especially as I have a much younger crowd. But they didn't mind me pointing out who got what and seemed to like the book overall. One of the kids got the humor of the monster part, which made me happy.

Very humorous and delightfully illustrated book about Milly the cow, who is supposed to deliver Christmas presents to the farm where she lives. The presents are mixed up as Milly trudges endlessly through a snowstorm, and we enjoyed seeing how it all worked out in the end. There is a lot of textual and visual humor adults will appreciate along with children, so take your time reading and look over the pictures to catch all the creative details and jokes!

I had to go back and look at the first of the book to remind myself and the children who was originally supposed to get which item, and that helped the kids to understand the humor of who got the presents in the end.

Wonderful detail that the farmer is a woman, and we see the friendship between the farmer and the mailman in a couple of details, such as, "he even found some mistletoe - just in case."

My favorite line: "Do the packages always have to arrive damaged?" sighed the farmer."

5 stars, story books just don't get better than this!

This children book follows the adventures of a cow named Millie on Christmas Eve . It shows how she pushes through the cold night to ensure the Christmas gifts make it to her many farm friends. This dedication teaches children that pushing through tasks will pay off in the end. I think it’s an easy fun book to read and shows how people/cows will do anything to help especially for their friends. The pictures that take over the pages help keep the reader engaged and interested.

In the middle of the book, I was amused and thought this book had some potential, but the confusing ending kind of ruined it for me. After reading a review, I went back to look at the end and it made more sense, but I still probably won't re-read it to my kids or students.

I love this, but the layout of text and pictures still seems a little difficult for my daughters age group (2-3 years). The illustrations are really cute though.
Hopefully it will return to our reading rotation during christmas.

Millie the mail cow has her satchel loaded with presents for everyone on the farm, but loses her way home in the snow. There's a very cute ending to this fun tale of holiday mayhem.

I discovered this book at our girls' elementary school library. The librarian was nice enough to give me my own card, so I occasionally borrow a book. I was visiting during the morning to watch our youngest get an award. After I said goodbye to her, I decided to see if I could find So, What's It Like to Be a Cat?, a book that wasn't available through my county library system, but was on the shelves at the school. My oldest just happened to be having library time then, so she helped me find some books to bring home. Just like LAY'S® potato chips, I can never get just one book, but I managed to get out of there with only three. But I digress...

This is an entertaining although almost-tragic story about a mail cow delivering Christmas presents to her home in the snow. The results are quite humorous, but also somewhat cautionary, especially for anyone who lives in areas where the snow is deep.

The illustrations are quite funny and we loved the ending. Overall, this is a silly story to read aloud, but quite appropriate for this season. We enjoyed reading this book together.

I had forgotten that there were other books about Millie until I read Heidi's review. I checked Alexander Steffensmeier's profile and saw that the book Millie and the Big Rescue is expected to come out sometime next year, so we'll have to start looking for it at our local library around September next year.

A simple little story that’s funny because of all the visual details, including a turnip Advent Calendar, a bright red monster tongue that’s not what it appears to be, and many accidentally repurposed Christmas presents. Millie the mail cow has only one delivery left to make before Christmas. To her own farm! And of course she knows just where that is. Maybe. It's just over there, right? Right?

Notably, this is one of the only children’s picture books I've read that identifies a woman as a farmer instead of a farmer's wife. Maybe women get to be farmers as long as they’re single, and then they get demoted? Even though I’m pretty sure that on most family farms, everyone who lives there is doing at least some farming…? Anyway.

This was clever and fun. My 5-year-old grandsons were a trifle too young for it though. There was too much space between the first page with all the gifts to the end where they are all jumbled for them. When we read it a second time, we stopped and I made a point of talking about each gift and speculating about it. That helped a lot but they wouldn't have gotten there on their own. Older kids would pick up on the joke though.

Cute story about a mailcow (yes, really, she helps the local mail carrier) who gets lost, slips in the snow and ice, and jumbles up the Christmas gifts for everyone on the farm.

Neat feature: the "farmer" is a single woman (the mail carrier's sweet on her).

Illustrations are fun.

Not exceptional but quirky and humorous enough to deserve some attention.

This story is about a mail cow, she helps deliver the mail and packages around Christmas time. The pictures are what made our entire family laugh. Minutes later we all busted up laughing again just thinking about some of the pictures. It helps when daddy makes the funny sounds and gives each character a different voice.
