This book is a bit old, but I love the respect it has to Homer´s work. As he notes, there is always a hard historical core in most heroic song cycles.

Also the insight of how much of the Mycenaean world disappears after the Bronze Age collapse was new to me. How literacy, architecture, trade contacts take nearly half a Millenium to come back to the earlier level in Greece.
