Fred and Ted—beloved canine stars of P. D. Eastman’s Big Dog . . . Little Dog —are back in an all-new Beginner Book written and illustrated by P. D.’s son, Peter Eastman! In this story Fred and Ted go camping, and as usual, their uniquely different approaches to doing things (such as packing equipment, setting up camp, and fishing techniques) have humorous—and sometimes surprising—results. A charming introduction to opposites that beginner readers will find ruff to put down!
Originally created by Dr. Seuss, Beginner Books encourage children to read all by themselves, with simple words and illustrations that give clues to their meaning.
Fred and Ted both pack up for a camping trip to the woods. When they arrive they let up their tents then get ready for bed. The next day they go fishing until Fred catches a big fish and it tips their boat over. When they get back to land they are both very hung so they search for food. Fred and Ted found apples and nuts that they cooked over a camp fire and then they had berries after. This is a great book for young children. There are a very small amount of words on each page but the illustrations do a great job of adding more detail to the story because you can see the emotions on Fred and Ted's faces, telling you how they are really feeling about each task. Another thing I like about this book is that Fred and Ted both have many differences throughout the story but it does not affect anything that they are doing. I gave this book five stars because I thought it was a great book. I really like how there is such a small amount of words, but with the illustrations you can get so much more from the story. I also like that there are a lot of different things that people can relate to in this book which is great for keeping the audiences attention.
Very engaging early reader! My kid pored over the colorful, catchy illustrations and he loved the juxtaposing of Fred and Ted. In my opinion not quite up there with P.D. Eastman's original work, such as our favorite Go, Dog. Go!, but it's a good sequel to Big Dog . . . Little Dog. As far as early readers go, it's a great choice, no words to stumble on.
We found this book while hunting for books for Kevin to read himself. I think it was a good fit for him. It had a lot of sight words and phonetic words. The story was cute. I probably wouldn't enjoy reading it to my kids over and over again, but it was a lot better than the ones Kevin brings home from school.
Read this tonight to the Princess (6) with her alternately reading a few of the simplest pages. We enjoy P.D. Eastman's books best, but Peter Eastman is a good follow up. This book is still a bit above her reading level but I think it is enjoyable for her to hear and for her to look forward to. We own this in a Big Purple Book of Beginning Reader books.
haven't read any early readers in a long time, but this book felt a little... Off. The first half seems to be comparing Fred and Ted's camping abilities, and it seemed like Ted could really have helped Fred. The second half switched from comparing abilities to saying one of them did a thing "er" than the other (faster, hungrier, etc). Then it stopped comparing all together
A good introduction to reading, this book has a lot of opposites and the pictures help a young reader figure out what is going on. Not the most compelling story, but it's colorful and a good way to practice reading. The illustrations are cartoonish and certainly will engage young children.
Simple and straightforward sentences for beginning readers. The story works well for young audiences. It is easy to predict the opposite actions depicted.
When my oldest saw the cover of this book he said, "Oh look, Mom! It's Go Dog!" While not as good as Go, Dog, Go, in my honest opinion, this is a cute book on opposites that my boys enjoyed.
As everyone else has said, not as great as the original. And yet, still great fun. Fred and Ted teach us about opposites, and also move on to things such as "fast" versus "faster."
I find this a little boring to read, but it's cute enough and my kids really like it. And it's piqued their interest in camping, which is something we haven't done with them yet.
My son loves this book probably because he can relate because he loves to go camping. This book lacks the charming rhythms of P.D. Eastman's books but it feels like a fitting tribute
I bought this book as a gift, but of course I had to read it first! I should start off by saying that I LOVE Fred and Ted. This is a cute book about opposites and friendship.
Fred and Ted have opposite experiences on a camping trip together. A little birdie helps them solve the problem of being hungry. A fun opposites adventure with Fred and Ted!
Okay, so this isn't getting five stars from me for being the most enticing story ever. But Violet at almost 3 years old, is FINALLY starting to sit down and listen to books again - which makes my librarian heart soar! This book was excellent for learning about opposites and contrasting situations. i.e. few/many, hard/easy, awake/asleep, early/late. Violet really kept her attention because these are concepts her therapists work on with her and that she was familiar with or at least recognized. Plus, my girl is in a family of campers and we love books about camping.
