Tractor naps. Time to plow. Cover off. Wake up now!
Climb aboard the big red tractor. It's time to get the farm ready for spring. Raking, plowing, and planting the fields is hard work. But working together makes everything more fun. Sitting atop such a powerful machine is so exciting--especially while wrapped safely in Daddy's arms. Everybody has to pitch in on a family farm. Let's get to work!
Ransom has published more than 150 books for children, and she is amazed every day that she's able to do this as her life's work. It's no small thing to discover at an early age (ten!) what one is meant to do, and then pursue that dream. For her, the best part of writing for children is that she can move between writing board books, picture books, easy readers, chapter books, middle grade novels, nonfiction, and biography. She is excited to move into picture book nonfiction with BONES IN THE WHITE HOUSE: THOMAS JEFFERSON'S MAMMOTH (Doubleday, 2020).
AMANDA PANDA QUITS KINDERGARTEN and the sequel AMANDA PANDA AND THE BIGGER, BETTER BIRTHDAY (Doubleday) are her first picture books with animal characters! She is proud of her easy readers featuring a brother and sister having fun throughout the year: PUMPKIN DAY, APPLE PICKING DAY, SNOW DAY, and GARDEN DAY. Look for more titles in this Level 1 series written in bouncy rhyme, plus the popular TOOTH FAIRY'S NIGHT (all Random House).
For all children who are interested in farming or tractors, this is a great book with easy rhymes and important vocabulary. The pictures tell more than the story of the tractor with the mom, baby, and dog all having a background role.
Tractor Day by Candice F. Ransom, illustrated by Laura J. Bryant, focuses on a day when a little girl gets to ride the tractor with her father as the field is plowed and disked.
The text rhymes and there is alliteration. The font is large and bold.
The real highlight here are the illustrations. The farm is filled with mostly friendly animals. The interaction of the girl with her father and mother are touching. Lots of animals are shown including crows, geese, donkey, pigs, cows, and sheep.
I really like the illustrations, but found the text too rhyming for my taste. Tractors are an imporant piece of farm equipment, well deserving of focus in getting all the work done on the farm. I personally prefer John Deere tractors, but that's because of my family roots in the Moline area.
I found the farm dog/puppy very annoying as he jumped at the donkey, chewed on the cow's tail, chased a pig, a sheep and a rabbit, but didn't chase the pesky crows. He's cute when he's asleep with the girl, but he needs obedience training NOW! I also found the picture of the girl planting seeds in the farm field wrong. You plant a field crop using a planter, not by hand! Planting by hand is for the garden. The idea of the tractor napping is cute, but inaccurate.
For ages 3 to 6, alliteration, rhyming, farms, tractors, animals, family themes, and fans of Candice F. Ransom and Laura J. Bryant.
A father and daughter take out the farm tractor to plow fields as crows and various animals look on.
I find it frustrating when the illustrators of children's books are not consistent in their illustrations. In this book, it was pointed out to me by a child, that the father doesn't always have his wedding ring on, and the mother is never shown wearing one. Leave it to a child to point this out. Illustrators need to learn that these things matter.
Tractor Day on the farm and everyone is included in the work and fun. Our girls liked the rhyming narrative and although there were some new vocabulary words (mostly tractor/farm-related), they had fun reading it. The illustrations are nice and I like the Mom and child interactions the best.
A subject not often touched, a daddy takes his little girl out on the tracker to tend to the fields. Full of new vocabulary, this may only be interesting to farming families.
This story is a tad bit long for some of the storytime kids to sit through but it does have cute wording and illustations for a child on a "things with wheels" kick. JD
A brilliant rural story of a daughter's day with her father and their tractor getting the fields ready to planted in the spring. What really makes this book are the delightfully cute illustrations.
Love this book for small children. It has lots of great photos that remind me of life back on the farm ~ including a red tractor and the older farm equipment.
Might work for toddlers with its short, rhyming text. Every toddler loves a tractor, right? And I love that the little girl goes along with her daddy in each farm chore of the day.
