Not really what I expected, but still the closest thing I could find to a history of Oakland. Each loose chapter generally contains some amount of history...sometimes pretty straightforward, and sometimes in a prose style. After the facts, Krich includes short stories that take place in various Oakland settings, but really have nothing to do with the history recounted at the beginning of that section. The stories are definitely the less interesting part, but perhaps represented the feeling of late 70s Oakland. That being said, there is a clear emphasis on the Oakland As, the Black Panthers, and government corruption...in that order.
