A past president of Western Writers of America, Coldsmith wrote more than 40 books, as well as and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. His “Spanish Bit Saga,” a series of related novels, helped to re-define the Western novel by adopting the point of view of the Native Americans, rather than the European immigrants.

Don Coldsmith – World of Silence – Reviewed 9/30/21 – Read 9/23-24/21
Survival in a World of Silence forces Possum to follow his best friend, trusting in their friendship.
Possum never hungered for love, because he knew that his mother and father were always there for him. Being their first born they lavished their love with abandonment. Then one day a sickness ravaged the village, striking young and old. The day that the Holy man walked away telling Otter Woman and Walking Horse that there was nothing more he could do, almost killed them. Never leaving his side, Otter Woman did everything possible to help him, they both continued to pray for his survival. Then one day after she had overslept, she woke to find Possum no longer burning with fever, his small quirky smile had returned, along with his appetite. But over time she realized that something was different. They soon found out he had survived at the cost of his hearing.
Speaks Not, soon stuck as his name but Possum never knew because he had never experienced the sound that he could not hear. As he grew, he learned to talk with his hands, Otter Woman knew that even though her son had lost his hearing, his high intelligence would carry him. Soon the whole village took an interest in Speaks Not adding to and expanding his small world. Tracks Well saw something special in him and took him under his wing, careful to not make him feel out of place, he taught him all about a new world of hunting that Speaks Not would never forget. Then one day while they were hunting, a bull Elk gored one of the hunters, he blamed himself for not being able to hear the charge that killed his friend. From that day forward, Speaks Not became Hunts Alone.
Join Hunts Alone on his journey, his life was one of exception but filled with love, ever-expanding his world even further, growing old, and making mistakes…
What did I like? This was an extraordinary read that drew me in from the first page. Of course, everyone knows that I have Native American heritage in my family and love reading and increasing my knowledge regarding my history. This book opened another channel to that, regarding a point that I have never even given a thought about. You can always have room in your mind to expand your knowledge if you will just open up to it, the same as Speaks Not did!
What will you like? Interesting, emotional, historical, and unique characters. Don shows us another avenue in the life of the Native Americans that will astound you. The learning, adaption, and course of the deaf person. How that differs from what takes place in the present, as compared to the past. Don has filled the heart-touching storyline with amazing characters that bring this wonderful book to life for the reader. I have read most of the Spanish Bit series and really liked them. The books give a very accurate account of the beliefs of the Southwest Indians from the time the Spanish came to America.
