A bedtime book for dads to share. When it's hard to go to sleep, watch out for Brad (who looks a lot like Dad!), engineer of the Bedtime Train. He'll take you to places wild (filled with bears and wolves and alligators) and full of adventures. Will that bridge tumble? Will those dinosaurs bite? Not to worry. The Bedtime Train is invincible, especially with Brad at the throttle and you in command! And when you get home, sleep awaits you in a warm bed.
This was a cute book. It actually reminded me a lot of the Polar Express, just not at Christmas time. A little boy can't fall asleep so he ends up on the bedtime train and goes on an adventure!
The pictures were a neat design and were muted colors which is perfect for a bedtime book. My 2 year old daughter was actually very interested in this one. She was laying next to me in bed, and a few pages in, she actually sat up and held my arm while I finished reading the book. She really enjoyed it.
This was actually a lengthy book. We'd put it off for a while because of how long it was, but she decided that was what she wanted to read last night. I'm glad we read it - especially with how interested in it she was.
We will likely read this again in the future, and if I see it at a used book sale, I'd probably pick it up!
Far superior to Mr. Odone's first book, Honey Badgers. Truth be told, the story did little for me; but as I am picky about my children's literature the value of such things is best left to individual readers. What I enjoyed was the free wheeling, esoteric imagery. The notion of capturing a dream and presenting it upon the page is quite daunting and this book treads a fine line between what is concrete and what is abstract. I consider that remarkable. From a more professional perspective, I felt that the stylization of the characters and design are far stronger in The Bedtime Train than Honey Badger because but not limited to the fact that Odone's work is pulling away from the influence of Maurice Sendak's oeuvre. It's always cool to see an illustrator swinging for the fence.
