Not just a typical Regency.
Catherine Hardwick is a country girl at heart, having been raised on her family's estate where her widowed father cultivates fine horses. Her aunt is pressing for one London Season, hoping to find Catherine a suitable husband. Having recently witnessed some of her close friends wind up in bad marriages, Catherine is in no hurry to do the same.
Norton Russell Foxhall is the Earl of Granby. He's rich and good looking, and never lacks for female companionship. While his faithful valet longs to see him settled down, Granby doesn't see the need.
When a chance meeting brings these two together, it definitely is not love at first sight. Catherine nearly runs Granby down with her mount, and only her excellent riding skills prevents a terrible accident. He is intrigued by such a skilled and beautiful rider and can see what a fine horse she is riding; she is annoyed at having her ride interrupted and wary of his motives when he forces an introduction.
Granby does want to purchase the stallion, but comes to want more than just the horse. Catherine does not want to lose the horse or the home and life she loves.
Ms. Waddell does a remarkable job capturing the sense of powerlessness a woman can feel when she is not at liberty to control her own destiny. While there is an HEA, the path to true love can be a bit rocky, as it is for Catherine and Norton.
