Let me preface this review by saying that I don't much care for children or things associated with them. I give you all the free rein in the world to analyze that how you will, but I'm simply not a fan. But when unpacking some books in my apartment and uncovering this, I chuckled. My father gave this to me when I was 10 (at which age I already didn't like children, despite being among their number) and I thought it was cute, but ridiculous. Re-reading it, I am amazed by the honesty, joy and curiosity of kids. I applaud the editors for choosing to leave each letter in an approximation of its original handwriting, poor spelling, backward ss and all. It allows the words to come through as they were meant, rather than trying to put the adult face of a font onto the childlike wonder of a God who may or may not have advance knowledge of inventions like toasters. Especially having just recently listened to a sermon on Jesus' fact that we must have the faith of a child to truly enter the Kingdom (Matthew 18:2-4), I found this not only amusing, but a delightful reminder to allow myself to wonder about God--and ask the questions I may feel an adult should have figured out by now.
Great little book. My personal favorite prayer is; Dear God, I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tue. That was cool! Eugene Once again, kids see it all so much clearer than we adults do.
"Dear God, Who draw the lines around the countries?" Nan
"Dear God, I am American What are you?" Robert
"Dear God How come you didn't invent any new animals lately? We still have just all the old ones." Johny.
"Dear God. here's a poem I Love You Because you give Us what we need to live but I wish you would tell me why you made it so we have to die" Daniel (age 8)
"Dear God It is great the way you always get the stars in the right places." Jeff
This book is so cute!!! Here are some of my favourites:
It's O.K. that you made different religions but don't you get mixed up sometimes?
Did you really mean do unto others as they do unto you, because if you did then I'm going to fix my brother.
I am English. What are you?
Please put another holiday between Christmas and Easter. There is nothing good in there now.
If you give me genie lamp like Alladin I will give you anything you want except my money or my chess set.
Maybe Cain and Abel wouldn't kill each other so much if they had their own rooms. It works with my brother.
I bet it is very had for you to love everybody in the whole world. There are only 4 people in my family and I can never do it. *********************************************************
written before children have internalized how to "properly" write and reveal their thoughts, "children's letters to god" follows a short series of questions, complaints and praises from children to God. i see in some of those questions things i have wondered myself, both as a kid and as an adult. here's one of my favorite pages of the book:
"dear God, i bet it is very hard for you to love all of everybody in the whole world. there are only 3 people in our family and i can never do it"
I got this book in 1995 when I was just 3 years old. One of my favorite letters: "Dear God, I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tues. That was cool. -Eugene"
What a cute book. You can read it in under ten minutes I bet, but it might be nicer to savor it just a slight bit. At first I thought, "I can't give this 4 or 5 stars, it's just a trivial little fun thing", but then I thought "Well why punish it for being so short, it gave me joy, so let my rating simply reflect that."
The book will nudge a smile from you for the full 5-10 minutes it takes you to read it. And here and there it will tug at your heart strings. And as you probably are assuming already, there will be some letters that are actually thought-provoking.
I like that the letters are in the original handwriting of the children. At least I assume they are--they all resemble a child's innocent lack of expertise. The spelling and grammar have not been corrected because as the compilers tell us, "what they tell us, they say better as they are."
Some of my favorites include the provocative ones:
"How did you know you were God? Charlehe
Dear God What does it mean you are a jealous God. I thought you had everything Jane
And some of the funny ones:
Dear God, I read the bible. What does begat mean? Nobody will tell me. Love, Alison
Dear God, On Halloween I am going to wear a Devil's costume. Is that all right with you? Marnie
Dear God, Who draws the lines around the countries? Nan
Dear God, If you give me genie lamp like Alladin I will give you anything you want except my money or my chess set. Raphael
Dear God, If you let the dinosaur not exstinct we would not have a country. You did the right thing. Johnathan
And some of the ones that moved me:
Dear God, I wish that there wasn't no such thing of sin. I wish that there was not no such thing of war. Tim M age 9
Dear God I don't ever feel alone since I found out about you. Nora
There are many more letters in the book; I almost wanted to relate all of them here. There are charming simple illustrations by Tom Bloom that accompany the letters.
Children's Letters to God" by Stuart Hample is a heartwarming and endearing collection of letters written by children addressed to God. This book offers a unique and refreshing perspective on faith and spirituality through the innocent and sincere voices of young children. The book is beautifully illustrated by Eric Marshall, complementing the innocence and purity of the letters. The illustrations bring the letters to life and add an extra layer of charm to the overall reading experience.
This is a charming read. Some are funny, like the one thanking for a baby brother even though they prayed for a puppy. Some are child-curious, like the one asking why Sunday School is on the day-of-rest. Some are surprising sad for how simple and short they are, like the one asking for a certain other kid to be sent to a different camp; that sounds like a chronic bullying issue.
Occasionally, there are some illustrations of a letter. These are cute and whimsical.
Children's Letters to God, Eric Marshall, Stuart Hample These are great, example: "Dear God. Count me in. Your friends, Herbie." "Dear God, Church is alright but you could sure use better music. I hope this does not hurt your feeling. Can you write some new songs. Your friend, Barry." "Dear God, I hot left back. Thanks alot. Raymond." ***
this made me smile so much and laugh and really it made me cry too but today that doesn't say much because i am extra emotional. and honestly I probably would've cried even more if I hadn't been in the library.
