Rate this book

Described as "Japan's version of Garfield, Heathcliff and Krazy Kat all rolled into one," Makoto Kobayashi's What's Michael? mixes slice-of-life cat reality with out-of-this-world cat fantasy into one tasty dish of laughter that even cat haters will find delicious. Very silly! "Planet of the Cats" is an extended sequence at the end.

This is the silliest volume yet. There's one story about a quite, older couple amusing themselves with their cat. Another where Dracula is trying to get in on the local dating scene but is scared away by cats. And then there's the multipart story about an astronaut crashing on a planet populated by cats who insist she's an elephant seal and sell her to a circus.

Definitely not for everyone, since the humor may come across as surreal or pointless to non-Japanese audiences. I think it's pretty funny, but some may argue that I'm a little offbeat myself. That said, the author definitely understands cats (and people). This one includes weird stories about Dracula, old folks, and mistaken identity. With an exobiologist. And a circus.
