Untouched and untested, Breanne had heard the terrible legends about the Demon Prince, but the man who saved her from certain death was as gentle as he was reckless. Embarking on a perilous journey from which she might never return, Breanne vowed to uncover Aidan's secrets, to release him from his enemies, then to quench the raging fires he had ignited in her heart.

I got a great copy of this book for a few bucks and couldn't resist that cover!
A beautiful, but very misleading cover.
♦ Despite the title Demon Prince, MMC is not a demon. He's not even villainous. He is a prince, though. 🤷♀️ ♦ Despite the astral background, and a "Futuristic Romance" label, it's not futuristic. It's set in a typical 'vaguely-Medieval' fantasy realm. ♦ Despite looking like a bodice-ripper, there is some emphasis on consent. (Brief foreplay-level dubcon, however.) ♦ Despite the awesome cover art by Pino which has a classic 70's/80's vibe (tell me that's not a disco dress!), this was first published in 1994.
... And I think that's why I'm struggling with how to rate it. If this was a 70's romance, I'd give it a lot more leeway. After all, 'old' tropes weren't always. Today's worn-out cliché was once fresh and original. But this is from the same era as Outlander, Lord of Scoundrels, and Robin Hood, Men in Tights. So, yeah. Not old enough to get a pass.
Demon Prince has allll the fantasy clichés. There are a lot of t'will's and t'won't's. I was especially a fan of:
𝙱𝚞𝚝 '𝚝𝚠𝚘𝚗'𝚝 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚔!
and
𝚃'𝚠𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍𝚗'𝚝 𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 '𝚝𝚠𝚊𝚜.
and also
It was campy, it was frustrating, but overall I had fun. I swear I could hear every line the MMC said in that booming Hero's Baritone. The FMC rescues the MMC more often than he rescues her. She does pretty much all the emotional labor too, and 'saves' him on basically every level. (Exhausting imo but hey more power to her 🤷♀️.)
There was constant push-pull for one reason after another. Early on, Breanne saves Aidan's life by offering to marry him. (Great scene, btw, even if the execution made no sense.) Before they marry, she's told she's actually So she spends a lot of time resisting her naughty, un- thoughts about him. How's that work out for her? Well, take a look. WHERE IS HER RIGHT HAND, HMM? 🤨
The villain (necromancer) is a neckbeard. The good mages are secretive and patronizing. The prophecies are annoying. The hero's talking horse Mr. Ed Lucifer is snarky. Everyone's an asshole to Aidan except Breanne who's a Mary Sue.
The hero is alpha on the outside, but kinda moody, bitter, insecure, and delightfully pathetic inside. Pathetic sounds mean but how else can I describe it? Here's an edited scene where he's hiding in the woods jerkin' it (or, lumber-jacking??) while spying on her:
See what I mean?? 💀. Lucky he was such a tortured sad-sack, or I'd have wanted to stab him—because he constantly pushed Breanne away 'for her own good'. He even wanted to But Breanne got her way almost every time, so points to her for tenacity.
note: This book is out of print but there are still cheap used paperbacks, or you can read it at Open Library.

Am actually re-reading it. I do remember why I kept it, but I think since I've first read it after it had been published I read now as a reader but also from an author's point of view. But I think most telling in the way I'm currently reading this is that I'm now a mother of teenage girls and the thought of either of my girls at 18 being with a 30 year old man leaves me cold. Now granted this was the way of that time, but let's be honest it still happens.
I'm still enjoying the story but to enjoy it I find I have to consciously ignore the age thing.
I enjoy reading old mass market romances from 30+ years ago because I like to feel connected to my sisters and mothers from the past. I hope the Brendas and Debras reading this before bed with their musty bald husbands snoring next to them got their rocks off to this sexy demon prince like they deserved. With that being said I had to erase certain moments and aspects of the plot such as the age gap, Breanne being ravished (assaulted) by Aidans DAD(?!?!) while he was pretending to be Aidan etc. in order to finish it.

Prince Aidan was cursed and left his home, only to return at his mother’s request on his thirtieth birthday. Along the way, he rescues a fair maiden from a band of thugs. When the law decrees every male must marry by age 30 or die, he fears his life is over. But Breanne, the woman he’d rescued, vows to wed him. Together they begin a quest to kill the sorcerer whose evil invades the land. An exciting, quest-driven futuristic romance by a classic author of the genre.
After being rejected by the woman he loves, a powerful wizard sells his soul to have her just once before she weds another. He also bargains the soul of the son conceived by that union. Only he must first take that soul for himself. Aidan, the Demon Prince, has been feared and shunned all his life because of his lethal powers. Now, after 15 years exiled from his family, he returns to his kingdom as promised and finds corruption, deceit and evil. He is forced by his father and brother into a marriage with a kind hearted woman who sees only the best in him, though he can not believe it. Breanna wants nothing more than to see Aidan take up his rightful place, restore his kingdom and be accepted by his people. She alone sees who he can be. But battling Aidan's longheld doubts in himself and his goodness is not an easy task.
This was more of a 3.5 for me. I really liked the tortured hero and his relationship with the rather Mary Sue heroine. She wasn't annoying in her MarySueness, so it wasn't that bad at all. I also liked the arthurian sort of set up for his existence in the first place - it definitely explains his "father's" behavior. While I like the inclusion of magic and mages - this all felt like a fantasy story, which I really liked. However, I'm not sure I liked the use of magic as an excuse for awful behavior...the family, if they're as awful as they were, should have owned up to it. With the release of magic spells, suddenly they're all better and supportive again and it felt a bit like a cop out. Likewise I was disappointed in the lack of sex scenes after the original consummation. I like that sort of thing to continue in moderation, so I can see the continued intimacy between the H/h. Their love was believable, but it could have been much stronger with scenes between the two of them.

First time reading this kind of genre 'historical fantasy ...' Very creative when it comes to describing the monster made by Morloch imaginations it's like your playing old school video games but you read it.
I think I've already read this book and then just re-read it and finished it just now. Maybe that first time I've read this, I would have been in awe but somehow something is missing here. I can't seem to remember liking this book then. Although I like the story it just doesn't pull at me like other books do so I gave this a rating of 3 stars.
