Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

This was a great bunch of issues in the Invincible story, but I could have done without the lame (to me) crossover stuff at the end. I don't know who the hell those characters were (I'm assuming they are from other Image titles), but the stories included in this in no way encouraged me to find out. Just...goofy as fuck.

description

Other than that, I have no complaints!
There are some huge developments in the story during this arc, and I'm going to try not to spoil actual plot stuff, but if you don't want to know anything?
Now's the time to turn away, folks.

description

Ok.
So, ohmygod Omni-man finally shows up again, and he and Invincible get to (sort of) talk about what happened. <--for a few minutes, anyway.

description

Turns out Daddy's been busy, and it takes everything to a whole 'nother level in both the long term and short term!
*rubs hands together*
This did not go down the way I thought it would, by the way...

description

So, between his newest family member, the Viltrumites, college, new teammates, a crazy dimension-hopping villain, a mad scientist, and trying to find time for his girlfriend, Mark's life is starting to spin a little out of control.

description

Honestly, to me, this title is just getting better and better. I'm halfway though the 4th Ultimate collection, and I'm still not seeing a lag in character development, storyline, or pacing.
I'm not sure what else to say other than this shit rocks!

I find myself enjoying the "Invincible" series. Kirkman's comic is an entertaining romp through the coming of age story of a young superhuman. Well, technically speaking, he'd be a half-human. I am speaking, of course, of Invincible.

Mark Grayson (Invincible) ramps up the story with the events of volume three. Without too many spoilers let it suffice to say that Invincible runs into his father on an alien world and their reunion will be a tragic one as the Viltrumites crash the party. Not only are the family revelations quite shocking, but the impact of the Viltrumite Empire will have long term implications in the upcoming volumes.

Invincible also wraps up the Dr. Angstrom story (at least I think so) and introduces the subplot of the Robot and his interesting "resurrection".

Considering the fun-factor and the twists, this volume would have merited 5 stars, but sadly Kirkman had to include some nonsense filler to pad out the volume. Meh.

Still this is a 4 star story. Invincible is like a fun superhero movie. Don't look too deep, just sit back and enjoy the story. There is humor, some character development in terms of relationships and some interesting plot twists that will certainly have me looking for Volume 4.

Kirkman's Invincible will never be mistaken for something deep such as an Alan Moore work. That is not what this series is about. It's the story of a powerful superhero who happens to also be a very young man dealing with some crazy personal issues and even crazier situations. In short- it's a lot of fun. I'm willing to give some credence to what's on the cover "The Best Superhero comic in the Universe". Hyperbole, I realize, but still a damn entertaining volume.

4.5 stars. SPOILERS!!

This was the best volume so far.

So much going on and yet it's all been built up.

As we know from the 1st volume invincible loses his vultrimite father, but in this volume an alien turns up on Earth and asks for invincibles' help. When the alien brings him back to his planet he finds his father there as King of the planet because they have voted him in as a long standing leader. Instead of squaring up to him, he bursts into tears and tells him how much he misses him.

His father then goes on to tell him, why he really brought him here and that he now has a half brother!

He has to fight the vultrimites, but only 4 of them, 4 however, is more than enough to causes them death or injury. Their way is death for the weak, which includes his near baby brother.

His father is defeated and taken away by the vultrimites , so invincible reluctantly takes his half brother home back to Earth where his mother adopts and looks after him. The baby brother will be an interesting character as he can learn what takes a human years in a matter of weeks.

Again we see levy angstrom, what a great character, he wants his own back on invincible so he sends him through alternate dimensions which includes fighting spiderman and doc oc , a chat with batman, fighting with talking dinosaurs and many more. A great piece of writing.

There loads more going on, God knows how he makes it all fit in without damaging the flow of the story.

Absolutely loving this series.

This to me is when the series begins to excel.

When Science Dog shows up on Mark's front porch he has to deal with heading back into space to find out what a race of aliens needs with him. Once he gets there he finds a huge surprise. On top of that we now have a new family member joining Mark's family so this should be fun. Oh you think that's all? A old villain returns and it really gets brutal as Mark has to deal with this son of a bitch going after his family.

Overall, this is everything I wanted in a comic. Great dialogue, life lessons, brutal fights, people actually getting hurt or dying I care about, solid all around pacing. This is Invincible when firing on all cylinders. To me the best superhero comic ever when it is at the top of its game.

A 5 out of 5.

This series really is a tour de force. Some of the best written superhero comics I’ve ever read and there are times when the art is just stunning. I’d long heard this was a great series but this surpasses expectations. All of the characters, including the villains, are three-dimensional and you find yourself really caring about them. Mark has the whole world on his shoulders and is just doing the best he can. There are times when this book is actually really moving and other times it’s very funny. Great stuff.

Invincible

Introduction:

After reading the first two volumes of Robert Kirkman’s fantastic superhero series “Invincible,” I was dying to read more from this brilliant series and I finally managed to get my hands on the third volume of the “Invincible: Ultimate Collection” and man, did this volume really blew me away!

What is this story about?

After the tragic events of the second volume, Mark Grayson has been trying to move on with his life which includes dating his loving girlfriend Amber and still saving the world on a day to day basis. One day, however, Mark gets a call from an alien planet that needs his help and he realizes that his father (you know, the guy who beat him up in the first volume) is ruling the planet and he wants Mark to help him defeat his own alien race, the Viltrumites, who are coming to the alien planet to take care of Mark’s father!

Will Mark help his father stop the Viltrumites or will he let the alien planet die out of spite?

Also, this volume contains the fourth issue of “The Pact” with artwork by Jason Howard, which contains the adventures of Invincible, Shadowhawk, Zephyr and Duncan fighting lava monsters that are terrorizing the world!

What I loved about this story:

Robert Kirkman’s writing: Once again, Robert Kirkman has proven that he can write a brilliant superhero series that not only contains full throttle action, but plenty of character development! I loved the way that Robert Kirkman wrote each character; especially Mark Grayson who is shown to be an extremely optimistic yet slightly tortured character. I actually felt sorrow for Mark’s predicament for his father as he felt a betrayal like no other and I can relate to Mark’s confused feelings about his father as he still loved him, but he cannot forgive his horrible actions in the past. I also loved Mark’s relationship with Amber as he is extremely honest with her about his superhero antics and it was a bit interesting seeing a strain in their relationship as Mark is having a difficult time trying to maintain his relationship with Amber as he is always out saving the world. I also loved the various different stories going throughout this volume as we have storylines that involve Mark meeting up with his father and the return of Angstrom Levy and they all managed to tie up into one storyline that affects Mark!

Ryan Ottley’s artwork: Ryan Ottley’s artwork is truly brilliant in this volume as the artwork is a cross between being realistic and being a bit scratchy, which really brought out the gritty nature of this story while at the same time, bringing out some humor to the story. I also loved the way that Ryan Ottley drew Invincible’s costume as it is shown in blue, yellow and black colorings, which I think made Invincible really stand out as a superhero in this series!

What made me feel uncomfortable about this story:

For anyone who does not like gory violence in graphic novels, this volume definitely has plenty of bloody violence that involves characters getting ripped apart and being punched to death and that might be a bit discomforting for some readers.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, “Invincible: Ultimate Collection: Volume Three” is a fantastic volume of the “Invincible” series and I am definitely looking forward to reading the next volume of this awesome series that caught my eye from the beginning!

So far I’ve done a review on each volume I’ve read of Invincible. It actually was one of my first Point of Entry columns. Josh Epstein, of Capeless Crusader, recommended it to me because of how much I enjoy The Walking Dead comics. The reason why I enjoy The Walking Dead is because I love to watch the plight of a normal human being who is thrown into an extraordinary situation. I like to see the rights and wrongs that people will do and especially like to find out what pushes a good person to do wrong. People threatening their family? Loss of their home? What?

Mark Grayson is a human being in the broader sense of the word. Meaning that while half Viltrumite he still has humanity because he was raised by his loving human mother and seemingly loving Viltrumite father. He grows up with a conscience and a strong sense of right and wrong. He goes out of his way to work for the greater good. He disrupts his own love life and angers his government official boss just to do what is right.

He admits to not knowing everything and just doing the things he believes are right. that said, Mark finds out what his breaking point is in this volume.

Spoilers Ahead: Proceed At Your Own Risk

A lot of really big happenings occur in Invincible: Ultimate collection Volume 3. To me, the biggest milestone is Mark’s fight with Angstrom Levy. Levy has convinced himself that Mark is the cause for his horrible disfigurement (his brain is so big you can see the shape of it through his skull). Because of this, he is bound and determined to exact his revenge on Mark. What better way to do that then to terrify Mark with the thought that his family is being brutalized in front of him, and will probably be murdered, all the while he can’t do a thing to stop it? That would probably be my breaking point as well. Levy alternates between sending Mark to random dimensions and beating on Mark’s mom while Mark tries unsuccessfully to engage Levy in a fight. Eventually Mark is able to take Levy with him to one of these portals. The fight ends in Mark showered in Levy’s blood and Levy dead on the ground.

Mark being the great person he is, is devastated by this. You can see it riding on his conscience for the rest of the book. I’m sure it will play a big role in his development from here on out.

To me, that was the most important event, but I’m sure some of you will disagree because that’s how opinions go. Let’s discuss the other two major events:

1. This actually takes place at the beginning of the book before the whole Levy business. Mark is enlisted by an alien to help rescue his planet. Once arriving, he finds out his dad is the one who sent for him. He tells Mark how he’s taken over the planet but not by savagery. They kind of elected him. Mark also find out that he has a brother.

This section is another testament to Kirkman’s skill at creating believable characters. I feel like most authors would either have Mark completely hate their father and make him swear vengeance. Or they would do the exact opposite and let them have a complete reconciliation. Kirkman doesn’t do either. Most real kids (definitely not all) would still want their dad to be the same dad that loved them their whole life. But if they got their wish they would still be angry and hesistant about putting their trust in him again. This was pulled off flawlessley.

2. The last major even is finding out that robot is an automaton built by an ugly baby sized man that lives in a bubble to protect himself from the “toxins in the air.” He enlists the twins to help clone his brain and puts it in a body that looks like Rex.

It explains a lot about Robot’s weird behavior in past issues. And honestly, because of his weird fixed smile I always thought he’d be up to something.

Overall, amazing book. Other that the big three story points, the comic is peppered with normallcy (love life problems mainly). I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I know I told a lot of the events of this book but there is so much I left out. So read it yourself!

Mark is settling into his new role as a superhero and adjusting to the loss of his father, but wait- an alien comes looking for help and brings Invincible to his insectoid planet, and guess who is there! Mark is a hella lot more forgiving than I would be, as he suddenly has to adjust to being introduced to his baby half-brother and helping fight off Vitrumites who come to collect Omni-Man. But that's not all! Once he's back on Earth with his brother in tow, he has to deal with the multi-verse of the villain Angstrom (I love all the dimensions that Mark was thrown into- with some digs at Marvel & DC heroes and an obvious Walking Dead dimension), the mad scientist at college and a scheme between Robot and the Mauler Twins. To top it off, he's trying to keep his romance with Amber going, but all his adventures pull him away from her. It's hard to be a superhero...

I was genuinely surprised at the Nolan reveal and now I'm wondering who was the being who came to Earth in volume 2.
But the back to back shock of Nolan being brought back, that he has a new wife, and also has a son was just so intense. I do get the feeling that he doesn't care for Debbie as much, but he does love Mark.

It looks like Debbie's going to stop drinking, but I'm glad she stopped before Mark brought back the baby. If she had stopped when the baby was there, it would have felt like it was happening for the wrong reason, like she wasn't doing it for herself.

When the Viltrumites came and destroyed most of the world and its people, Nolan is genuinely upset, he actually cares that people have died. He's battling between his Viltrumite beliefs and what Mark has made him see. He does choke Mark after he tries to comfort him though. Mark says that it's okay and normal to feel upset about this, but Nolan says it would be better to feel nothing.
It's so satisfying to see Nolan genuinely struggle with what's happening. He left Earth and won't return to do his best to protect it and its inhabitants. He thought conquering this new planet would allow for some leniency from the Viltrumites, but with them killing so many, it shows that what Nolan has done doesn't matter. Even though this planet's life was comparable to Earth, the Viltrumites do not care. They want to hurt Nolan because they see him as weak.

Out of the three Viltrumites, I'm not certain how many, if any, are dead. One had his head bashed in so badly that his eye was popping out. Another, Lucan, had his intestines spilling out of him, and one is definitely alive sans an eye. Lucan was the first one Nolan fought and believed he killed, but ended up coming back and breaking Nolan's spine, rendering him immobile. Invincible, obviously, was beaten to a pulp.
I think one of the men actually has died, possibly Lucan. Only one of the stretchers is covered, as if someone died. Mark is told that he is worthy, but they will come to Earth in 100 years and expect that he has made it suitable for takeover, otherwise he will be executed. Nolan also tells Mark to read his books before he's taken away.
I have no idea what's going to happen with the Viltrumites. If they're actually going to come back after that long, only Invincible and Immortal will be alive. Who knows if anyone else would have decent enough powers. If they're going to come back sooner, who would last against them?

Debbie took to the baby surprisingly well. She named him Oliver, after her father. He does look like a chubbier version of Mark, especially with his hair. I think this will help her in a sense. She'll be able to care for someone, which will help her get out of bed in the morning and stop drinking. But at the same time, it's literally a baby from her husband's new wife. She doesn't seem to be taking it that badly though.

I don't understand Cecil's discussion with Mark about leaving Earth to save another planet. He doesn't believe Mark did anything wrong, but he is mad that Mark didn't listen to his orders. I think Cecil is willing to let people die if more people are saved. I think he also probably knows the extent of how many other worlds may need help, but also understands that it's impossible for Mark to be everywhere. Whereas Mark will go anywhere to help people. He doesn't want anyone to die at all.

Mark goes to see Amber, who is obviously upset that Mark has been gone for so long. She also mentions that maybe they shouldn't be together, but immediately regrets it.
As much as I think Amber is good for Mark, I don't know if they should be together. She literally cannot fathom what he is doing. She has every right to be upset, but not one person was happy to hear about what Mark had done. He went to this planet and while there was destruction and death, he did end up helping them. He had to deal with seeing his father, that his father had a baby and a new wife, then come back home, explain this to his mother, get yelled at by Cecil, and then talk to his upset girlfriend. That's incredibly exhausting and demoralizing. Who does he have to talk to who would understand?

We get briefly introduced to Mastermind, someone who can control people. While under his control, people still have their own thoughts and can speak, but cannot act of their own accord. Mastermind also wears headphones, so I'm wondering if he has to wear those to control people, if something would happen to him if he didn't wear them, or maybe it's just part of his outfit. Invincible ended up knocking out Mastermind, much to Shrinking Ray's chagrin as he was actually going to be the one to save everybody. I wonder if this is going to breed some resentment within the Guardians of the Globe or if it's just a passing emotion for him.

The reanimen subplot is pretty terrifying. People are literally going missing and while there is some of a search, it's not being done in earnest. Rick has left before, so people aren't too concerned, but he's literally been experimented on and no one is coming to help right now. It's probably too late for him anyways.

The Mauler twins help Robot/the guy in a jar transfer the latter's consciousness into a body made from Rex's DNA. Then the guy in a jar is killed. Robot/Rex reveals himself to the Guardians of the Globe. He tells Monster Girl he did this because he resonated with her story. She tells him she isn't into children and they're just going to be friends. He says that phase two is underway. I think he just wants to be with Monster Girl, but I am wondering if he just wants to use her powers somehow.

The Martian who pretended to be an astronaut is upset because he doesn't understand what's happening on Earth. But he does explain that he hated that the sequids were being enslaved. He gets distracted, seeing an old video of Martian Man, a member of the original Guardians of the Globe, being a superhero. He decides that's what he's going to do to give himself some purpose on Earth.
I didn't expect some Martians to be sympathetic to sequids. He literally knows that they will take over Mars, but seems okay with that. If sequids are essentially parasites and will take over anything they can, why is he okay with that? Was he literally just manipulated or does he feel sympathetic towards them?

Mark and Eve talk about what's been happening with him. I'm not too sure how I feel about them. I could understand the being in a relationship because they are so similar, but at the same time, is that the only reason they like each other?

I didn't really expect Angstrom to be a villain. He definitely seems like he would be the archenemy to Invincible, because how is he supposed to win against someone who could just create dimensions wherever he wants? Invincible does end up defeating Angstrom, but goes a bit too far and seemingly kills him. We didn't get an actual panel showing that he's dead, but considering the blood loss, I think he is. I think this is the first time Invincible actually killed someone, so it's taking a toll on him. I don't know how this will affect him because he's never really wanted to kill anyone before. Is he going to be okay with people dying now? After what Angstrom did to his mother, I completely understand his anger though. Debbie has gone through enough.

Mark ends up returning back to his dimension with help from this dimensions Guardians of the Globe. They lost their version of Mark. This team has Robot, but it's Rex. Is it the original Rex though or the clone? There's Bulletproof, Eve, Monster Girl (who I think is just perpetually in monster form now) and two other people we don't really know. I'm wondering if the others died or if they quit.

Oliver gets a tutor, April, from Cecil. Something about her seems off to me, I just don't like her. The way she was talking to Debbie was a bit rude, but because she's worked with Cecil, I don't know if she actually is evil.

Mark goes to talk to Arthur about Eve and Amber. He realizes he wants to be with Amber because of everything she's already been through with him. He might talk to Eve about how he's feeling about her, especially since the older Eve in the other dimension wanted him to. He mentions to Arthur that Nolan told him to read his books. Arthur gives him some sci-fi books Nolan wrote. Mark realizes these are books about how to defeat the Viltrumites.

All of the side plots really keep everything fun. It is difficult to remember everything that has happened, but it also allows for a lot of rereading to notice what you didn't pick up on before.
I still wish we had more comic relief from the people in England.

Reseña de Cripta comiquera:
https://cripta-comiquera.blogspot.com...

¡Buenas, gente!
The Ghost in the Shell.

Fácil, ¿no?

Bueno, me inspiré (?)

Volume 3 of Invincible is the point where it transformed from a good superhero comic to a great mind blowing superhero comic. Mark's father returns in a most unexpected manner. Mark learns that he now has a half brother, Oliver, who has some unusual characteristics. There is a battle with 2 other Viltrumites that shows Mark how vulnerable he can be, fighting his own people. These battles may seem gross to anyone who hasn't read comics, but if you were weaned on Superman, you will be saying, I can't believe he did that.

In addition, Angstrom Levy makes his first serious attack on Mark. Robot transforms his physical appearance in order to make an impression on Monster Girl.

consistently above average but never grand storytelling. Invinible is never going to reach the heights of Batman but it seems okay with that. Kirkmans characters are too similiar and often share the same sarcastic tone. The different dimensions was interesting, the same as his friends 15 years in the future, saving him from one dimension. There are lots of interesting storylines but most feel recycled from previous storylines. The brother angle could be good for the series as the mother has fallen right into a cliché.

I'd be hard-pressed to find a better written superhero comic currently being written (with the exception of Brubaker's Cap and GJ's run on Green Lantern). And this was easily the best volume of the series so far.

My favorite part of this series is seeing Ottley's art skills sharpen. Just absolute phenomenal work and fun, soapy drama and superheroics from Kirkman.

The highlight being the jumps through multiple dimensions

Aliens, time travel, dimension-hopping, surprise family reveals, consequences, the third ultimate collection of Invincible has it all.

In "A Different World" we see some old faces, and are introduced to a whole new planet of faces, along with SURPRISE REVEAL. Much of what makes Invincible work is that Kirkman is constantly presenting scenarios that seem like they're complete, but they're all actually building to something bigger. This sixth volume of the trade paperback (the first six chapters of the Ultimate Collection) is a complete story. You could read it without ever bothering with the first five, and you'd know what was going on, and it ends at a perfectly reasonable point in the narrative that you could survive never bothering to read further. I love it when a creative team can pull off a complete narrative within a much larger narrative.

***

"Threes Company" provides a more standard I Hope You Read The Previous Volumes Scenario. While there are some repercussions from the SURPRISE REVEALs of the previous volume, much of this depends on stories from the Ultimate Collection Volume 2. There's also a steady increase in a really creepy subplot that doesn't seem at all creepy unless you know what's coming. Kudos, Kirkman.

I recommend this for fans of the best 21st century long-form superhero book, Cousin Oliver Brady enthusiasts, and M Night Shyamalan twist deniers.

Invincible: The Ultimate Collection vol 3 is the best volume yet in this series!

The reintroduction to Mark’s dad was a pleasant surprise, and one that I was not expecting to go the way it did. Kirkman really changes the scene here by expanding the Grayson family with Mark’s half-brother, and the fight between Mark, Nolan, and the Viltrumites was the best battle yet!

And the gas pedal continues to slam to the ground as the confrontation between Invincible and Angstrom gets dark and brutal real quick. It was fun to see Mark get thrown into all of those different realities, especially the the familiar ones from other comic book universes. I’m hoping that the outcome of this confrontation has some stakes and continued character development, and doesn’t get brushed aside as we dive into the many different side webs that have been dangling throughout this series.

I really enjoyed the quieter moments in this volume as well. The relationship between Mark and Amber has really been developed in this volume, and the readers finally care about Amber, she’s more than just Mark’s arm candy at this point. It will be interesting to see how their relationship stands after what we throw Eve in the mix as well. I enjoyed Mark going to Art for girl advice, and look forward to see their relationship continue as well. And all the side characters, like Robot and Monster Girl continue to get the attention and development they deserve which just adds to the impressive story of this series.

Invincible continues to get better with each volume, and I can’t wait to see where this story goes!

Yessss. This is the moment we've been waiting for. I get it Robert, you gotta build us up, but it's hard to relate to completely innocent Mark! Mark learns some tough lessons in this volume. Up to this point, Mark has fought some lowly baddies. Mark handles them with ease and flies off, yo is invincible amirite. Ehh, maybe not. Mark finds himself barely alive after running into a few viltrumites. He is faced with rescuing his estranged father and charged with caring for his new half brother. Mark's got some real problems to face this time around. We see that stress emerge when he returns to earth and has a run in with a powerful baddie, armston levy. To protect his family, Mark rips Levy to bloody shreds. Mark has never killed anyone before.

Side plots continue to develop. I would really like to see debbie raise oliver to defy nolan, and mark would be torn between them. Though, honestly, I'm not sure we'll see Nolan again...

Ponownie wkraczamy w świat Marka Graysona i bliskich mu osób.
