For use in schools and libraries only. This 80-page adaptation has been painstakingly edited to retain the integrity of the original work, and to convey a sense of the author's style and the novel's theme. A low reading level assures success and stimulates a desire for further exploration of this classic tale.
Each novel, complete in just 80-pages, has been painstakingly adapted to retain the integrity of the original work. Each provides the reader a sense of the author's style and an understanding of the novel's theme.
There is a reason that this is a classic - it is a masterpiece of plotting as well as a feat of lengthy writing. I would never have been able to read the whole thing as the audio book itself took well upward of 40 hours. (42 sections, 117 chapters). First section is straightforward narrative about Edmund, but then it seems to go off in a hundred tangents. Ultimately all those tangents are brought back together and tied up.
The authors take you on a journey of hope, despair, perseverance, defeat, redemption, and revenge. The richness of the side plots weave smoothly into the over arching plot to give it more substance and relevancy. They give the clever actions of the count a deeper impact on the book's characters and reader. This book delivers front the first page to the last. It is not a difficult read. It is long but you'll find yourself engulfed in the plot, characters, settings and is worth the time invested as you become a part of the world and part of the story these authors have created.
In the middle of the book you have no idea where the story's going. Everyone has a different roll and seems to be disconnected. But by the end all the stories come together... and not in a mixed up way.
I wish I had the time to write about the moral side of the book... No one cares anyway.
I'm honestly not sure if this is the abridged version I listened to or not. But it's probably this one or one similar.
After listening to the Bill Homewood almost 53 hour version I wanted to find one that was the shortest I could find and I found one that Bill Homewood did *possibly in the late 90s early 2000s*? (Not sure on the date.) My reasoning for reading this book was to see what they could have possibly cut out to make a 53 hour book less than 3 hours long. The answer: pretty much everything but also nothing vitally important. Most all dialogue is cut out and summarized. There are no descriptors about pretty much anything. What did the landscape look like? Nothing. How did one character get from here to there? Nothing. In the unabridged version Dumas rattles on for pages (I followed along with an ebook version and there were literal pages without a paragraph break). None of that exists in this version obviously to cut out as much as possible.
That being said, all important characters are included, all major plot points are there and happen but they are summarized or cut down immensely .
In all, a good "wet your whistle" book for the unabridged version but if you like this version and are left wanting more I would suggest the unabridged version for a more complete storyline. Or maybe somewhere in the middle? Only 10 or 15 hours instead? I'm not sure, but I'm too tired to look for that. I'm satisfied reading both versions and that's enough for me.
“Must I see the man I loved become the murderer of my son?”
He promised Mercedes that her son would live. Mercedes thanked Dantes and kissed his hand. But Dantes thought, “By sparing Albert’s life, I am giving up my own life.”
tore a bullet right through me. if this was a simplified version, I can only imagine how shattering the unabridged version is
Quotes I liked:
“Sooner or later, God remembers us.”
“I don’t believe in God,” said Caderousse. “Ah, but there is a God,” said Dantes. “And there is justice. Look me in the eyes? Don’t you recognize me?”
..
Caderousse struggled to speak. “So there is a God, after all,” he gasped. “Forgive me, Lord, forgive me, You are the father of men in heaven and the judge of men on earth!”
Read this book when I was at junior high school. My Dad recommended this book by saying 'you will learn that everything is possible, if we urge to. Revenge is just the bonus, it is to value our life that you should learn from this book'.
Imaginative and valuable, even for kid (when I was reading it).
This is not the edition that I read but I couldn't find the edition that I read so I just chose this one. There were a few things I didn't like about this book at first once Dante got out of prison I enjoyed the book much more.
Este libro es maravilloso de principio a fin. Para mí, no le falta ni le sobra nada. Los personajes están completamente bien desarrollados y explicados, eso y la manera en que está escrito hace que empatices, sientas, te emociones, sufras.
I had to read this for my Sophmore English classes. It was ok - the kids liked it because it was a condensed version. The origional is over 800 pgs. long!
I read the the saddleback classics edition, indeed, which contains 77 pages only. But, I believe that even if I read the papperback edition, I will finish it passionately.
