Excellent collection of this mostly forgotten artist. Everyone know the look of the Vargas Girl but few know must about the artist himself. Recommended
I actually feel like more books about artists should follow this same style. This book features a short biography of the Peruvian artists life and his significance during the 1940s to the American war effort and then proceeds to show his works done in Esquire. The highlight of this book are really Vargas's work, which the book dedicates about 100 large pages to their glory. This book gave me a real appreciation for his work. I once found the Varga girls to be somewhat overtly sexual and too erotic but now I find them beautiful, innocent and classy. My only complaint with this book is that there is a lack of Varga's work outside of his years at Esquire. I still would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in art. It is a short read about a notable artist with plenty of his work to view and appreciate.
A nice book of pin ups by Alberto Vargas, there is some text on the first few pages but it's very bare bones, what matters is the 100 pages of (mostly) full page Varga pin ups. All these pin ups are taken from Vargas' years with Esquire, the introduction also gives a taste of his earlier work (but not much.) What the world really need is a "Complete Pin Ups of Alberto Vargas" as has been done with Gil Elvgren, Vargas worked between about 1920 and 1980, only his Esquire work is generally available, there must be hundreds of illustrations that we almost never get to see.
There is about forty Vargas Girls here . All are from World War I I era calendars. The book includes a few pages of biographical introduction focused on Vargas' path to Esquire and career there.
