Hayden & April- BRAB ONLINE BOOK CLUB

I loved this book, this author makes her characters so lovable; and their issues so relatable that you can't help but fall in love.

April had been through a traumatic illness and wanted to visit Europe, so when her friend Stephanie invited her to go to Venice, Italy, she jumped at the chance. Hayden originally from Philadelphia, was now working with the state department in Italy. Wouldn't you know that they had attended the same school, even they were never friends.

The story highlights their relationship, the issues they had to deal with and their coming together into a beautiful romance.

I liked this story. It was a romance between normal people. Grown folk. He wasn't obscenely rich and she wasn't a slightly bitter career woman. They were just two people that life had managed to fray at the ends a little. My ONE issue is with research. The author states that April was from Philly. Or Philadelphia, PA if you're not from the area. But as April is driving home from the airport, it says she went to Maple Shade. Maple Shade is in NJ. Later on when Andrea was visiting, the author writes that the girls went in to the city to see the tourist attractions. That's not how you would phrase it coming from Jersey. Finally, April was telling her friend Stephanie that her daughter Anesa was going to visit her aunt and uncle in NJ. They already live in New Jersey. The only way she would have needed to phrase it that way, would be because they lived somewhere other than NJ.

Yes. These will be seen as small and almost petty criticisms. But my thing is this, when you start talking about real places that exist; do your research. Know what you're talking about. You never know when one day someone will be reading your story and actually come from that place.

The Next Best Thing: Divorced mom and breast cancer survivor April is going on her dream vacation to Venice with her best friend Stephanie. But Stephanie is called away on business, and a now solo April loses her passport and credit card. After resigning herself to being stranded at an Italian police station, April is rescued by a caring rich lady and taken to a lovely villa. At the villa she sees Hayden, a crush from her past all grown up and working for the US Consulate. Hayden helps April replace her travel documents and shows her the sights of Venice. Her old feelings resurface, and it seems like Hayden feels the same. But he lives in Italy and April has a life and child in Philadelphia.

Like the other Sandra Kitt I read recently, I finished TNBT in one night. Once again, how refreshing to read about adults! April and Hayden have big obstacles to their otherwise perfect love story. Neither of them are young, unattached, and able to just pick up and move to another country. This is a romance novel, so obviously they work it out, but still. I enjoy seeing something real! And April and Hayden are very real. They both are struggling to live fully in the present, but over the course of the novel they learn to embrace not just the present, but the future as well. Oh! And there is a bonus love story with April’s friend Stephanie and an Italian cafe owner! What more could you ask for in a summer read?

April and Hayden grown folks

After such a time in a land of romance, Venice, Italy was a nice pleasant surprise to set the storyline of April and Hayden. Both having to overcome their past and live for the present it was interesting how their love unfolded. Great sub characters in Stephanie and Santiago.

The only reason this isn't a five star for me is because the ending felt rush. Like a race to get to the finish line in a nice wrapped bow. Not to mention the bomb that was dropped on Hayden by Reese and Brett, so I would have like to see that explored more.
