Very insightful collection of essays - particularly The Color Purple & She's Gotta Have it & Black Spectatorship and the resistance of the passive gaze.

A great resource I used for an upcoming project. I would say that some of the information is outdated by now, but the historical context given by essays within was still very helpful.

A little hard to read for non film makers... I found myself using it more as a point of reference than an interesting read.

Anyone looking for an introduction to Black Cinema, from Oscar Micheaux to Julie Dash to Spike Lee, should definitely start here.
