Peter the Pirate Squid tells the swashbuckling tale of a pirate squid and his gaggle of oysters, sea horses, crabs and other scourges of one seventh of the sea. Inspired by the pirate who passed to and fro over their murky depths, this fishy band pursued their own piratey lifestyle and engaged human buccaneers on their own turf, which was kind of hard since these intrepid sea beasties were pretty small. So, come set sail on the tiny ship Barnacle Booty with Peter the Pirate Squid, and see feet slashed, confused maidens, slimy sword fights and their never-ending quest for shiny baubles.
Om Nom and Daddy bought this book for me today because it goes with my "pirate" theme, and Om Nom likes Roman Dirge. It's my very first book ever! Daddy was so excited, he decided to read it to me right away, while we were all visiting at the hospital in Vancouver with Pa, instead of waiting until bedtime when we were back at the B&B we were staying at with Nana and Auntie Neene.
This book is very funny! Daddy was actually laughing out loud while he read it. He tried to read the whole thing in a voice like a pirate would have (which made Om Nom and Nana and Pa and Auntie all laugh, too), but he was laughing too much. There were some parts that I didn't quite get, but I loved laughing with Daddy and everyone else. The story of Peter and his crew was interesting, even if it was silly sometimes. Actually, the "silly" is probably why we all liked it so much. The main character, Peter (who has the same name as me!) is really a squid, and he captains a ship crewed by other sea creatures, and they engage in pirate activities like attacking other ships and searching for treasure. They have a fun (and really long for a book this size) adventure and learn some surprising things. Om Nom says she thinks this book wasn't really written for little kids, but I'm really happy they bought it for me, anyway.
I bought this book years ago because I thought it was fully by Roman Dirge who's work I love. Unfortunately it turned out to only be written by Roman Dirge, it is illustrated by Steven Daily. Mister Daily is a very skilled artist as well, no doubt, but I was so disappointed in Mister Dirge that I didn't read this book until years later.
It gets one star because the main character seriously is a pirate squid and his crew of sea animals is awesome. It gets another star because of the humour that is portrayed in the writing. It does not get a third, fourth and fifth star because it is not drawn by Mister Dirge himself and also because it's in black and white only. Furthermore the font changes from very big to very small every page (because some picture needs more text and some doesn't) which was annoying. Also the story wasn't exactly spectacular and awesome, it was just neat and actually way too long. You can do so much better, Dirge!
It's about a squid. Who is a pirate. And it's funny. I think it is safe to say that Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press with the express purpose of paving the way for this book to be printed. This is the greatest book that has ever existed.
This is one of Isaac's favorites because we read it in a pirate voice, which makes it really funny to us. It's probably not a good book for small children but once they're a little older and have a snarky sense of humor, you're golden. Of course, it's better for adults!
