Catching A Buzz

Rate this book
"A Midsummer Night's Steam" story.

Can a straight-laced business student and an indie boy with a thing for extremely personal electronics turn one night's wild ride into a trip to last forever?

Adam Holderman isn't your typical twenty-something college boy. He prefers jazz to Goth, shuns body piercings and street-waif clothing, and despises the lack of vocabulary among his peers. Some call him uptight, but Adam doesn't see it that way. Just because he prefers his men articulate and well-groomed doesn't make him a stick-in-the-mud. He simply has standards, unlike most guys his age.

The new employee at Wild Waters Park, where Adam works, single-handedly throws a monkey wrench into Adam's orderly world view. Buzz Stiles wears eyeliner and black clothes, listens to emo bands, and talks like a teenage skate punk. He's the polar opposite of Adam's avowed type . So why can't Adam get him out of his head?

When Adam finally agrees to go out with Buzz, he finds there's much more to Buzz than a hot body, a sharp wit, and a Goth fashion sense. Buzz is someone Adam can see himself being with for the long haul. But you need more than mind-melting sex to make a relationship last. Can they keep their hands off each other long enough to find out if they have what it takes?

Warning: This title contains the following: graphic language, explicit male/male sex, inappropriate use of personal electronic devices, and gratuitous disco dancing."

Ally Blue penned her first tale at age eight, relating the breathless terror of her little sister’s not-quite-fatal encounter with a bee in the backyard. That was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with storytelling. She now writes gay romance of all flavors, and has recently branched into writing her first love: horror. She continues her neverending quest to scare herself. She is not a hippie or a brain surgeon, no matter what her kids’ friends say.

I’ve noticed that Catching a Buzz by Ally Blue has received mixed reviews. I’m not sure why some people didn’t care for it much, but I did. I liked Adam and Buzz’s budding relationship. The book has a quirkiness that I enjoyed, and it really was a fun and easy read, which is just what I was looking for.

Adam Holderman has been playing it safe all of his life. Instead of pursuing his dream as a writer, he’s majoring in business because that’s what his parents want. Plus, he hasn’t come out of the closet to his parents either, because he’s not ready to deal with the drama he feels like that announcement would make. Adam has a very quirky personality and he has an ongoing conversation with his conscience/thoughts in his mind that sounds just like Scarlett O’Hara; which was quite funny at times and I admit I loved it!

All summer Adam has worked at the local water park. Things were going pretty smoothly for him until he was paired up to work with Buzz, who is an intelligent, eyeliner wearing, Goth; who is fun loving and literally starts pursuing Adam the moment he lays eyes on him.

Every day Adam and Buzz find more to talk about and a friendship ensures. Buzz is always asking Adam out, but Adam continues to say no, much to Buzz and Scarlett’s despair. Finally, as the season comes to an end, Adam decides to take a chance and he and Buzz go out on a date. It’s a night that Adam won’t ever forget and the start of a very fun and loving relationship.

I loved Buzz. He’s the polar opposite of the more straight laced Adam. But, even being different they clicked well together, and I thought their relationship was very sexy and sweet.

There is quirkiness to his book which I loved. I like Ally’s sense of humor, and it shines through on the storyline which I thoroughly enjoyed. Plus, there’s much more to Buzz that meets the eye, including why he has the nickname he goes by. They chemistry and the sex scenes between Adam and Buzz was intensely fun and I really loved spending a couple of hours with them.

Ally has also written a short story of Buzz and Adam's first Valentine's Day together which was I loved, too! Here's the link to that for those who are interested:

5 stars!

Catching a Buzz has been an incredible read. Adam and Buzz are fantastic characters and I couldn’t stop reading about them once I got started. They are so different, but they are made for each other! The sexual tension between them was palpable and I definitely wanted them to go for each other.

And wow! The sex in this story was totally hot and oh so kinky! I loved it and I was a little disappointed when I reached the end of the story! These two would have a lot of potential for a full-length novel!

A fun, hot and easy read for in between! Perfect!

The first thing the prospective purchaser should know is that although you buy ninety-one pages, you are only getting sixty-two pages relating to Catching a Buzz. The other twenty-eight pages are advertisements for other books. This, of course, is not the author’s fault. But I had no idea I was coming to the end of the story until it ended quite abruptly. Prior to that, I was happy to keep reading because I assumed I had another thirty pages or so for the resolution and whatnot. So when I was suddenly seeing “The End” not only was I surprised, but a bit disgruntled. I think given the other twenty-pages, the author could have pulled off a satisfying story.

Given the subject matter Blue chose to use, I don’t think she gave herself adequate enough space to pull it off. The story seems to be a sweet little summer romance story. And that is how it starts. But when the two boys go off on their first date, they end up at a sex shop buying D/S paraphernalia. This wasn’t just a lark to one of them, this was something much more. During the night, Adam, wanting to please his kinky date, decides he wants to shove a beer bottle inside Buzz. Buzz wants the wide end. This scene isn’t extraordinary, but Adam is as vanilla as you can get, so this scenario screamed unsafe to me. But hey, it’s a romance story, right? Fiction. No prob. When Buzz wanted a swizzle stick from Adam’s drink shoved in his cock, I began to definitely question the characters’ abilities to have a lasting relationship or even a safe one. Urethral Play isn’t a sexual practice that you can just pick up and dabble in. We are talking about a very delicate piece of anatomy here. Not that it was technically handled poorly, but it still didn’t seem to be a very natural thing for these two boys to do on their very first date on top of the beer bottle thing.

Buzz came off as either a pain/adrenaline junky or an excited novice in BDSM, which is a complete turn-around from the laid back guy we meet in the beginning of the story. Adam was a conservative and narrow-minded type individual, an ‘aged beyond his years” type. But then he begins to want to do these BDSM escapades. Okay. I could accept that. But then, the next morning, the story is done. I was left wondering if they could actually pull off anything more than a one-night stand even though they had decided to become boyfriends. The questions asked in the synopsis would have me answering "no." It just didn’t sit well with me.

And for some reason, Adam had the voice of Scarlett in his head. Again, I think Blue tried to shove a bit too much into a short story. The voice was cute, but did sound more like Mammy on a few occasions rather than Scarlett.

The scene with the mother was horribly anti-climatic and happened just before the abrupt ending, adding to the sour taste left in my mouth.

This wasn’t a bad book, just a… not-quite-there book. A story that could have done much better if it had been allowed to flesh out a bit more. I recommend it for anyone who wants a quick and dirty read.

I have certain expectations when I spend money on a book, whether it is a short one or a full length novel. If it's a freebie, I have no right to complain if it cuts off at 65% on my Kindle. If I actually spend money on it, I do have that right. Around the time I thought the story was actually getting started there was an abrupt ending.... at 65%. The other 35% was what I assume were descriptions of the author's other work though I don't know because I rarely (if ever) read that stuff at the end of any book. I stop at THE END.

I have read quite a few by this author. A couple actually made it to my favorites shelf and a couple were so bad that had I not read the good ones first I never would've wasted my time (or money) on anything else by her.

This started out really good. Though I didn't know it going in, it is set in my town (Mobile). I thought that was pretty cool even as I laughed out loud at some of the things said in regards to the setting. If I recall correctly, she is actually from down this way somewhere. I liked Adam okay though he seemed snobbish and judgmental when it came to folks outside of his little zone. I loved Buzz. Watching the two of them flirt back and forth for awhile before they went on a date was pretty cool though I thought that went on too long.

Adam has this goofy Scarlett voice talking to him in his head. Ridiculous. I did not think it was cute (in ANY way). I thought the guy needed professional help. He is described as being boring when it comes to his "type" of man. Buzz is definitely not his type but he is attracted to him right off though he refuses to go out with him even though he's asked every day for a month. They finally go out and shy Adam is no longer shy.... not when it comes to anything sexual anyway. I found that to be so unrealistic. He put Buzz off for a month. He is extremely shy with Buzz at work. But from the first kiss by Buzz he's willing to not only step out of his "zone" but step into the BDSM one? And try anything and everything the first date? That didn't work for me.

Buzz.... totally loved him. There is a quick scene with his twin that was a little on the creepy side but thankfully the author didn't push that particular boundary. What you saw with Buzz was what you got. The author described him a certain way and there it was.

This started out very good. I liked the way the author was building it up. Then it took a very weird turn and it never recovered. The way Buzz got his name was weird. Actually, everything that happened from the minute Adam finally said he'd go out with Buzz was weird.

Adam has never told his parents that he is gay. He is terrified of doing so. But when "Mom" finally finds out it is a total nonevent. Maybe one little paragraph and all is well.

This started out as a really good story. I liked everything about it and then it went all weird in more ways than one. I am kicking myself for wasting my money on this book. It definitely was not worth that or the little bit of time it took to read it. The 65% really irked me. When I pay for something I expect to get what I paid for. This was most definitely NOT the case.

So, this was a sweet story of finding love, coming out and opposites attracting one another. It is summertime at the local water park and the new guy is set to take over for Adam's coworker and friend, Marcy. Enter Myron aka Buzz--and how did he come by the nickname? Oh please--as if I would give that little tidbit away! Needless to say I laughed until I cried when reading exactly what the"buzz" in the name Buzz meant. The story progresses as these two young men dance around the idea of dating and of their attraction to one another. Adam is still in the closet and often avoids the hard issues in his life by "thinking about them another day." Ally Blue runs a sort of continuous comedy routine featuring the voice and persona of a southern bell that carries on conversations with Adam in his head. This quick and often funny interchange between Adam and his "conscience" makes for some highly entertaining reading throughout the book. Buzz is a brash young "goth" who is tantamount to sex on wheels and is in lust with Adam. By the time the two eventually hook up you have been highly entertained by Ms. Blue's clever dialogue and intriguing characters. All in all this is a happy little novella and definitely worth the read!

Wow – creative use of sex toys and nicknames! I’m not sure why, but I was surprised that I liked this book as much as I did.

Adam is a not-quite-out college guy working at a water park for the summer. Buzz is the new employee and everything Adam didn’t expect to ever like in another guy. Every day, Buzz asks Adam out, and every day Adam turns Buzz down. That is, until THE DAY! The sizzle keeps building between these two until it reaches the boiling point and Adam finally caves.

The date that takes place is one heck of a wild ride – quite literally. Oh, to be young and curious with tons of stamina!!! When Adam and Buzz finally sate their hungers, they know how to do it:)

This book was short and sweet, so it didn’t leave room to really know what the future holds in store for these guys, but it ended on a positive note with potential. If you like a quick fun read and don’t mind some mild kink, you might enjoy this!

I really wasn't feeling this book. Buzz is very strange. I mean, he goes on a date with a vibrator up his butt, which just seems super awkward to me. Butt plug, maybe, but vibrators are distracting ... and they move, FFS ... that thing's totally going to work its way into his intestines or something when he's not paying attention, LOL! O_O And he keeps going on about how people are obsessed with him and his twin getting their twincest on when it seems more like HE's the one wanting to get his twincest on, what with kissing his twin on the lips and asking him if he's turned gay yet. Very strange.

A short, sweet read about two college-aged guys with a light BDSM kink. Nothing spectacularly complicated in this one. It wasn't profound in any fashion, and I prefer my stories a bit longer and more complex. But every now and then a small dish of creme brulee just hits the spot, you know?

Sometimes the best thing in life doesn't fit the pattern you've set for yourself. Adam finds himself drawn to Buzz almost immediately upon meemeeting, but can't understand why. Buzz, to all appearances, is the exact antithesis to Adam's image of the kind of guy he wants. Buzz is persistent in his pursuit of Adam. Eventually, with the realization that they could loose each other with the end of their summer jobs at the water park, Adam finally relents and agrees to a date with Buzz. And what a date it is! A very hot little read.

I was angry when I finished this story.
First, the cover. It’s a gorgeous cover, there’s no doubt about it. It’s the kind of cover art that belongs on some beautiful, romantic tale, something with a few laughs, a few tears, a few life lessons, and the hope for a happy future. And hotness, too. The cover makes me want to read the book, want to like it, finish it with a smile and keep it forever. That’s what good cover art is supposed to do, and the artist, Anne Cain, succeeded in this admirably. It’s too bad that the story itself fell far short of the promise inherent in the art.

Apart from the false advertisement of the cover, I disliked this book for the complete waste of my time. I got nothing out of it: I didn’t learn anything from it, I didn’t react positively to any part of it, and I didn’t care one whit for any of the characters. I don’t happen to believe that a glass beer bottle is a thrilling or a safe substitute for a decent dildo. I’m not impressed by flashy cars. The nod to twincest left me cold, as did the club scene. Yes, it’s graphic, but I can get higher-quality erotica for free from any number of fandom sites where I actually like the characters. Every potential real-life issue for gay men that was raised in the story, as well as the resolution of the story itself, ended in a manner disgustingly reminiscent of a premature ejaculation.

Catching A Buzz is nothing but the recounting of a date between a pair of equally-insipid boys, and since no one in their right mind could possibly have expected me to be interested in this story if it had been an M/F pairing, the idea that the author expected me to be interested for no better reason than because it’s M/M… That’s simply insulting. Not just to me as a reader, but to the genre as a whole.

The book is technically well-written, I’ll give credit to Ally Blue for that. If there were any typos or major inconsistencies in the story, I can’t say I noticed them. I think the author has the ability to create stories that would be worth reading. I think that if a reader wants to waste their time and money on what’s basically a PWP with a sloppy ending, then there’s no reason not to buy this book. But do I personally recommend this story? No.

This started out being exactly what I was looking for: a nice, fluffy summer-fling romance. Adam and Buzz meet on their job at a water park, and I loved the light-hearted summery set-up.

Their first meeting and conversation was lovely and sweet and had me looking forward to more. But then we get to "as the weeks passed" and being told how they're now really good friends who've spent almost every day working together and taking all of their breaks together. /sigh. I hate being told things like that... I want to SEE it!

Anyway, while disappointed, I haven't been totally put-off yet and am still willing to give these boys a chance. Buzz has apparently been asking Adam out every single day even though he's been turned down every single time. When we finally stop skipping weeks at a time, it's to a day near the end of the summer when Adam realizes he'll be starting school soon and won't see Buzz. So he agrees to a date, and they FINALLY start kissing. Then there's a weird scene with some homophobic co-workers whom we've never before met...

They boys go home to get ready for their dates. And then it seems like they turn into totally different people. The date went from strange to weird to WHAT?! to waking up the next morning with Adam's mother (who doesn't yet know he's gay) knocking on the door.

And then it ended. Not really very well resolved, and with like 30% still left to go. The 2nd star is for the beginning, which was honestly fun and delightful. And for the potential that the story had that I wished it had been able to achieve.

Not deep enough to satisfy me

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 6/10

PROS:
- I liked Buzz. He’s the laidback, joking sort, which is amusing; and it also makes his moments of seriousness more striking.
- I found the setting entertaining. Blue captures the monotony of working at a water park pretty well.
- This author is good at creating sexual tension, and she rarely disappoints on the payoff.

CONS:
- The story is too short to show its characters or their connection in any depth. We briefly see the first couple of interactions between them, and then the story skips ahead by several weeks. We don’t get to see what Buzz does to wear Adam down. I wanted to know when Buzz went from vaguely-interesting-but-not-tempting-enough-for-Adam-to-accept-his-offers-of-dates to irresistible.
- I found Adam’s mental conversations with Scarlett O’Hara to be far less cute than I’m sure they’re supposed to be. I thought they were annoying rather than endearing, and it’s a bit disturbing that Adam converses with the Scarlett voice in his head by responding out loud.

Overall comments: If you want an hour’s read with a bit of (kinky) sex, this might be a good choice. It fell flat for me, though. It’s too short to do justice to the characters or their budding romance. The file is 1878 Kindle locations, but the story is only actually 1238; the final third of the Kindle file is ads for other books.

I am a reader of fan fiction, so I’d thought I’d encountered pretty much everything… not so, apparently. Somehow this managed to hit on a squick I didn’t even know I had. I actually almost stopped reading it right then and there. I can go along with the beer bottle thing, though a big part of me really cringes at that, but actually inserting something into a penis? Squiiiiiiiiiiiiiick. Unfortunately, there’s nothing else redeeming about this. The narrator is an elitist jackass and utterly unlikeable. Plus he apparently has Scarlett O’Hara in his head, which is just irritating. Buzz is a little better, but still pretty two dimensional- really, he’s just a surfer-dude stereotype with black nail polish and hair. That bothered me too- the insistence that he was “goth” because of those two things. Really? Some black nail polish does not a goth make. This is the second thing of Ally Blue’s that I’ve read and thoroughly disliked- I think I’ll pass on reading anything else of hers.

I was a little disappointed with this book. It started out so well and I was so looking forward to follow these guys getting to know each other. But there was a little build up and then BAM, the rest of the book was just sex. Sex that didn´t particularly appeal to me.
Adam was a guy with so many issues and they were barely touched. Both Adam and Buzz were interesting and likeable guys, but I hardly even got to know anything about them.
Another disappointing thing was that the book ended after 2/3 of the "promised" 76 pages. The rest was only excerpts.

Can't believe I never wrote a review on this one. Maybe I'm just now picking my jaw up off the floor, because I just did not see this one coming. Started out as a sweet little love story & ended up as holy hell, did that just happen? It was HOT. And other than a lack of character development & abrupt ending, I think I really liked it. Um, at least I can say I definitely caught the Buzz ;)

This really could have use a few more chapters. Things were rushed at the end. And the sex took a decidedly weird left turn into kink. I mean who does this . Especially on the first date.

Too short and very sweet!

Despite a little bit of squick factor for me at one point--kids, don't try the glass stuff at home--I thoroughly liked the protagonists and was joyful to read about the beginning of their relationship.

Two barley legal boys having sex on the hood of a car? Oh hell yeah. Such a cute story too. It was short so it felt a bit rushed but that didn't detract from my enjoyment much at all. Plus we got quite a bit of kinky sex for such a short. Thank god!

But the first date for me it seemed like two different characters from there to the end of the book. Just an okay read for me.
