The Tithe Commutation Act of 1836 is something of a forgotten landmark in English agrarian and social history. By the Tithe Commutation Act traditional tithes -- based on a tenth of the produce of and nourished by the earth -- were converted into rent charge payments based on the prevailing price of grain.
