This book contains classic poems from Helen Steiner Rice accompanied by the beautiful watercolor artwork of Cathi Freund. It is wonderfully packaged with its padded front cover, gold-foiled title and a ribbon marker.
This was my mother's, and somehow I ended up with it after her death. It sat on my parents' bookshelf all my life, but it wasn't until recently that I decided to read it for the first time. I've never heard of Helen Steiner Rice before, but apparently she was a fairly influential Christian writer in the 60s and 70s. Her poems are collected here, and divided by subject. Rice spent many years as a greeting card writer, and to some, it shows. Others may not enjoy rhyming couplets, but I detect a simple, yet wise understanding of living by faith day by day. Those seeking comfort and/or encouragement will find it here.
4.5 stars -- This collection is divided into 10 sections. I used each section as a morning devotional for 10 days. Each one served as a most welcome devotional during this brief moment of time in my life (Post-op). Helen Steiner Rice was a beloved Christian poet whose cards and poetry collections were popular world-wide. This collection was published by Guideposts, a venerable Christian magazine that still exists today. My only complaint with this collection is that due to the rhyming nature of her poems, many times I had to focus to keep 'sing song' out of my head. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it.
This was a fun addition to my morning quiet times. A short poem or two a day as the sun comes up can have such a transformative power on my mood as I go about daily chores. They’re short & easy to remember & rooted in biblical truth. You will undoubtedly ponder on them as you fold the laundry and make yet another meal.
Some of the poems are very blocky making them hard the read visually but otherwise I think the poems are very heartfelt and get their points across in a beautiful manner. Moreover, the accompanying pictures were very pretty and add to the calming sense of the poems.
Okay so I’m not a huge fan of poetry but some of these were kinda good. Their messages were nice but the need to rhyme in every single poem annoyed me so much!!!
These are the type of poems you might find in greeting cards or small gift books to give to your mom/grandma/friend or even yourself. I love Rice's way with words and of course I remember my mom did as well. Reading this made me think of mom with each and every poem.
Lately, I've been reading the poems from this book at my poetry club meetings. There's always one that fits my mood and situation. She's so positive, and I love it!
