Humayun Azad (Bangla: হুমায়ূন আজাদ) was a Bangladeshi author and scholar. He earned BA degree in Bengali language and literature from University of Dhaka. He obtained his PhD in linguistics from the University of Edinburgh in 1976. He later served as a faculty member of the department of Bengali language and literature at the University of Dhaka. His early career produced works on Bengali linguistics, notably syntax. He was regarded as a leading linguist of the Bangla language.

Towards the end of 1980s, he started to write newspaper column focusing on contemporary socio-political issues. Through his writings of 1990s, he established himself as a freethinker and appeared to be an agnostic. In his works, he openly criticized religious extremism, as well as Islam. In 1992 Professor Azad published the first comprehensive feminist book in Bangla titled Naari (Woman), largely akin to The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir in contents and ideas.

The literary career of Humayun Azad started with poetry. However, his poems did not show any notable poetic fervour. On the other hand his literary essays, particularly those based on original research, carried significant value.

He earned a formidable reputation as a newspaper columnist towards the end of 1980s. His articles were merciless attacks on social and political injustice, hypocrisy and corruption. He was uncowed in protesting military rule. He started to write novels in 1990s. His novel Chappanno Hazar Borgomile is a powerful novel written against military dictatorship. Azad's writings indicate his distaste for corrupt politicians, abusive military rulers and fundamentalist Islam. Nevertheless, his prose shows a well-knit and compact style of his own. His formation of a sentence, choice of words and syntax are very characteristic of him. Although he often fell victim to the temptation of using fiction as a vehicle of conspicuous political and philosophical message, he distinguished himself with his unique style and diction.

On August 11, 2004, Professor Azad was found dead in his apartment in Munich, Germany, where he had arrived a week earlier to conduct research on the nineteenth century German romantic poet Heinrich Heine. He was buried in Rarhikhal, his village home in Bangladesh.

In 2012, the Government of Bangladesh honored him with Ekushey Padak posthumously. Besides this, he was honored with Bangla Academy Award in 1986.

- Some books are written. Some books are bled. Humayun Azad’s ‘Pāk Sarzamīn Shād Bād’ (হুমায়ুন আজাদ-এর ‘পাক সার জমিন সাদ বাদ’) bleeds on every page—and the men it exposed tried to finish the job with machetes.

In a twisted way, it could also be read through a modern lens as an early Bengali example of what we might today call ‘dark romance’—though that was certainly not the genre Azad was trying to write.

Following the 2004 attack on Dr. Humayun Azad, my father—the late Intellectual and Agriculturist Md. Goljar Hossain, PhD—bought copies of ‘Amra Ki Ei Bangladesh Cheyechilam’ and ‘Pak Sar Jamin Sad Bad’ on May 9, 2004, from Tarafdar Book Depot in Bogra (now Bogura), and specifically warned me not to read it. Well, I read the book from cover to cover that very night, as you can probably guess. Needless to say, at 17, I was far more shocked and entertained by the text than I was capable of truly understanding it.

Ahmad Sofa once said, “When a piglet grows teeth, it wants to bite its father’s thigh just to test how sharp they are.” That is how Azad’s writing feels here—sharp, abrasive and deliberately uncomfortable. This is not a book that asks for your attention. It grabs you by the throat.

Even the title is a provocation. Pak Sar Jamin Sad Bad, roughly “Blessed be the Sacred Land,” is the opening phrase of Pakistan’s national anthem. Azad—linguist, poet, Dhaka University professor, and outspoken freethinker—uses it ironically, against the backdrop of a Bangladesh struggling with the resurgence of religious extremism and the political forces that had opposed its independence. The novel first appeared in The Daily Ittefaq’s Eid supplement in 2003 and was published in book form by Agamee Prakashani in December that year, at a time when the violence and political tensions following the 2001 BNP-Jamaat election victory were still fresh, including attacks on religious minorities.

Bangladesh has made some commendable strides since the period Azad was writing about, especially during the Bangladesh Awami League’s subsequent tenure (its later term, 2014–2024, was marked by fascism), and some of those changes are encouraging. Yet the novel’s larger warning remains painfully relevant beyond Bangladesh—including in neighboring India, where rising Hindu nationalism, religious extremism and terrorism, anti-Muslim discrimination, hate speech, and communal violence continue to generate serious concerns, particularly under BJP-led governments, which many accuse of openly encouraging such trends.

So, what kind of book is this?

Well, not a comfortable one. Azad’s most effective narrative decision is this: he gives the microphone to the monster. It is a first-person confession from inside the skull of a radicalized member of the fictional Jama'-e-Jihad-e-Islam—a political organization widely read as an allegorical stand-in for Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. There are no neat chapter breaks, no gentle transitions. You are locked inside the narrator’s head as he rants, lusts, justifies, and moves through a world where “malaun” is a slur, arson is called jihad, a woman’s body is treated as a battlefield, and a mosque becomes a recruitment center. Yes, there is an erotic charge in places, but it is not romance. It is appetite and violence tangled together. If a fanatic’s mind could be printed on paper, this would be the document.

Azad’s language is extremely crude, profane and sexually explicit. At first, the brutality of the language feels purposeful: Bismillah before alcohol, prayer after sexual violence, black money hidden beneath white caps. Perhaps an ugly ideology requires ugly language to expose it. The book does not attack ordinary Muslims; it attacks the merchants who sell God in exchange for power. And it does so with such fury that reading it feels less like turning pages and more like being slapped awake in a dark room.

But here is where the difficulty starts.

As a novel, Pak Sar Jamin Sad Bad is a blunt instrument. Sheer repetition eventually dulls the shock. Character development is almost nonexistent—the narrator is less a person and more a weapon. The structure is messy, the satire is often blunt, and the political message sometimes overwhelms the fiction.

I understand why some readers find parts of the book offensive toward Islam itself, and why many believers would find this deeply hurtful. Azad’s public image as an atheist—and, to some readers, as more openly anti-Islam than merely anti-fundamentalist—undoubtedly intensifies that perception. The line between satire and slander is thin, and Azad walks it recklessly. For me, that is a legitimate weakness. Extremists do not represent an entire religion, and people who exploit religion for political power do not represent every believer. But, at the same time, the narrator’s grotesque worldview is not automatically Azad’s own; that ugliness is part of the narrative device. The novel is strongest when it attacks the weaponization of religion for political power, and weakest when its fury becomes indiscriminate. Azad frequently wins the argument but loses the novel. Even Humayun Ahmed, in an interview, called it “so vulgar that anybody would be hurt after reading it. He doesn’t have to be a fundamentalist.”

Still, calling the book merely “hate speech” misses what makes it intellectually interesting. The criticism is not baseless, but here is the uncomfortable truth: a polite book could not have carried this much weight. Azad did not write this to be liked. He wrote it because he could not stay silent.

Furthermore, the book is so sexually explicit and graphically charged that many readers have dismissively labeled it as 'civilized Choti / চটি'—a taboo, underground form of cheap Bengali erotica. That label reduces the book to its sexual content and ignores the psychological and political context. I think that reading is reductive, but I understand why the novel invites it.

And now the part that turns the novel into a legend.

On 27 February 2004, about a week after Jamaat-e-Islami MP Delwar Hossain Sayeedi called in Parliament for a blasphemy law to prevent the publication of such books, Azad was attacked near Bangla Academy after leaving the Ekushey Book Fair.Assailants hacked him with machetes. He survived that attack and was rushed to the Combined Military Hospital by order of then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He was later moved to Thailand and then to Germany. Before his death, he wrote a moving letter pleading for freedom of speech and protection for himself and his family. He died in Munich in August 2004. In 2006, members of the banned militant group Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) reportedly confessed to their involvement in the attack. In 2022, a Dhaka court sentenced four JMB militants to death for Azad’s murder.

Read that again: a novel—a work of fiction—became part of the reason its author was targeted for death. That single fact tells us something about the book’s importance that no star rating can capture and no review can fully convey. But that does not automatically make the novel a masterpiece. A courageous book can still be a flawed book.

My personal rating is 3/5. As literature, it is uneven, repetitive, excessively vulgar and sometimes too blunt. As an act of literary courage and a political warning against fundamentalism, however, it is difficult not to respect. I would not recommend it to the faint-hearted—and yet I also believe it should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to understand Bangladesh’s long struggle against the forces that have sought to drag it backward.

This book will not make you feel good. It will not entertain you in the usual way. It will disturb you, disgust you, and possibly offend you. But perhaps that is exactly why it remains worth reading. Some books comfort us. Some educate us. And some disturb us so deeply that we cannot simply put them back on the shelf.

Read it with an open mind and a strong stomach. Not because it is perfect. Because silence, in the face of what this book describes, is far more dangerous.

⁉️ QOTD: How much power do you believe literature holds in challenging or changing the social and political realities of a nation?

🔖 Save if you believe literature can be a weapon: the Bengali political satire that got its author killed.

Death of fundamentalism and religious fanaticism. Accurate revealing of the transparent mask of fake religion. The most necessary revolt against blindness and metal arrogance in Bengal land. An astonishing book, might be one of the most brave and revolutionary Book in 21st century. Respect to Sir Humayun Azad for exposing the inner poisonous roots and minds of religious fanatics in bengal land. Masterpiece of Bengal literature.

A sharp stab at BNP-Jamaat and their ideology; A much needed criticism of the government at the time when Jamaat's cronies were rampaging minority villages with impunity. Humayun Azad's fearless fictional tale has some shortcomings however - that of being crass in every possible way, being repetitive and severely lacking character development. The sheer hypocrisy of BNP-Jamaat-Shibir was portrayed beautifully but I'm afraid the crass language overshadows the point.

A tour inside the heads of people who use religion to spread terrorism. This book is very boldly written. Even though it has a lot of triggering points it reminds us again that the religion which makes us sacrifice our humanity is no religion at all.

Reading this book was not easy. Knowing about Humayun Azad's extreme atheism, it was clear that the book was written as an extremely sarcastic statement. However, the foul language, no division of chapters, gibberish storyline, it just makes the reading experience stressful.

If you are a non-muslim and believe that he's writing to represent muslims, oh boy are you wrong. The particular sect he addresses only intends to seize and abuse power, and that's it. This is not a representation of Islam.

Also, can't deny, reading this book (published in 2004) in 2021, some of it's statements are still used by stupid extremists. After The Taleban's return to power, Facebook/twitter was filled with speeches like the ones described in this book.

So no matter how uncomfortable this book makes you feel, you should read this book, to have perspective, to understand the difference between the religion and politics.
