Muhammed Zafar Iqbal (Bengali: মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল) is one of the most famous Bangladeshi author of Science-Fiction and Children's Literature ever to grace the Bengali literary community since the country's independence in 1971. He is a professor of Computer Science & Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Before that, Iqbal worked as a research scientist in Bell Communication Research for six years until 1994.

Birth and Family Background:
Iqbal was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father, Foyzur Rahman Ahmed, was a police officer. In his childhood, he traveled various part of Bangladesh, because of his father's transferring job. Zafar Iqbal was encouraged by his father for writing at an early life. He wrote his first science fiction work at the age of seven. On 5 May 1971, during the liberation war of Bangladesh, the Pakistan's invading army captured his father and killed him brutally in the bank of a river.

Education:
Iqbal passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1968 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1970. He earned his BSc in Physics from Dhaka University in 1976. In the same year Iqbal went to University of Washington to obtain his PhD and earned the degree in 1982.

Personal Life:
Iqbal married Dr. Yasmeen Haque in 1978. Yasmeen is the Dean of the Life Science Department, Head of the Physics Department, Provost of the Shohid Janoni Jahanara Imam Hall and a researcher at SUST. They have two children - son Nabil and daughter Yeshim. Yeshim translated the book Amar Bondhu Rashed (Rashed, My Friend) written by her father. Iqbal's elder brother, Humayun Ahmed, was the most popular author and film-maker of Bangladesh since its independence. Humayun died after a nine-month struggle against colorectal cancer on the 19 July 2012. His younger brother, Ahsan Habib, is the editor of the satirical magazine, Unmad and one of the most reknowned cartoonist of Bangladesh.

Academic Career:
After obtaining PhD degree, Iqbal worked as a post-doctoral researcher at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) from 1983 to 1988. He then joined Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), a separate corporation from the Bell Labs (now Telcordia Technologies), as a Research Scientist. He left the institute in 1994 and joined the faculty of the Department of CSE of SUST.

Literary career:
Iqbal started writing stories from a very early age. Iqbal wrote his first short story at the age of seven. While studying in the Dhaka University Iqbal's story Copotronic Bhalobasa was published in a local magazine. But, a number of readers at that time felt that the story was based on a foreign story. To answer this allegation, he later rewrote the story and published the story in collection of stories named Copotronic Sukh Dukkho. Since then he is the most popular writer both in Bengali Science-Fiction and in Juvenile Leterature of the country.

Other Activities and Awards:
Zafar Iqbal won the Bangla Academy Award, the highest award in literature in Bangladesh, in 2004. Iqbal also played a leading role in founding Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. In 2011 he won Rotary SEED Award for his contribution in field of education.

জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের লেখা প্রেত উপন্যাসটি আমার কাছে অসাধারণ ভালো লেগেছে। এই পর্যন্ত যতগুলো ব্লাক ম্যাজিক বা ভৌতিক বই পড়েছি তার মধ্যে এটাই বেস্ট। মেদবিহীন এই উপন্যাসে লেখক প্রতিটি চরিত্র, স্থান, কালের বর্ণনা এমন ঝরঝরে সুন্দরভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন যে, পড়ার সময় মনে হয়েছে ঘটনাগুলো যেন আমার চারপাশে ঘটছে।


উপন্যাসের প্রধান চরিত্র কিশোর রুমি, ছোট বোন ছাড়া আর কেউ নেই তার এই ধরণীতে। সাদামাটা বৈশিষ্ট্যের এই কিশোর হঠাৎ একদল দুষ্টলোকদের মায়জালে পড়ে যায় যারা ব্লাক ম্যাজিকের জন্য রুমিকেই খুজছিল। তাদের কাছ থেকে পালিয়ে আসার পর রুমি আবিষ্কার করে লোকজন মনে মনে খারাপ কিছু চিন্তা করলে তা সে শুনতে পায়! দূরে কোথাও অপরাধ সংঘটিত হলে তা সে স্বপ্নের মধ্যে দেখতে পায়!! লেখক তার মধ্যে এক সুপ্ত দেশপ্রেমের উদয় করেন রুমি তার অবিশ্বাস্য শক্তি প্রয়োগ করে দেশের নামকরা এক চিত্রশিল্পীকে আটক করতে। ঐ শিল্পী শিশুদের ধরে ধরে হত্যা করছে শুধুমাত্র মৃত্যুর আগে শিশুদের ভয়ার্ত চেহারার ছবি আর্ট করার জন্যে।রুমি সফল হয়েছে ঐ চিত্রশিল্পীর মুখোশ উম্মোচন করতে কিন্তু তার বিনিময়ে রুমির মস্তিষ্কের কিছু অংশ নষ্ট হয়েছে। টানটান উত্তেজনায় ভরপুর এই উপন্যাসটি জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের সেরা বিশে স্থান পাবে।

I read two horrors by the author ages ago. And I'm now confused about which is which. There's no description of the book on Goodreads either. I liked the one where a mother wanted to sacrifice her child on an alter for the devil. It gave me all the emotions that a horror should give. That one (this one if it's that one) even made me feel for the mother in the end. If it's that book, then it's a good read. If it's not the one I'm thinking correct me.

৩.৫! ভালোই, কিন্তু ভেবেছিলাম প্রেতসাধকদের কাজকারবার দিয়েই শেষ হবে কিন্তু না শেষ হয়েছে সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্নভাবে। খুব বেশি আশা নিয়ে বইটা শুরু করিনি তাই আশাভঙ্গেরও কোন কারন নেই। একটা ব্যাপার বেশ লক্ষণীয়, এই প্রেতসাধনার গল্প বলতে গিয়ে লেখক আমাদের দেশের কিছু নির্মম সত্যকে এতো সুন্দর করে তুলে ধরেছেন তা আসলেই প্রশংসনীয়! তাছাড়া স্যারের হরর বইগুলো কোন এক বিশেষ কারণে আমার খুবই পছন্দ। এর আগে ছায়লীন, অন্যজীবন আর পিশাচিনী পড়ে বেশ ভালোই ভয় পেয়েছিলাম। এই বইটা ঠিক ভয়ের না, কিন্তু ভালো।

হরর জনরাটা আমার ঠিক রোচে না!! কারণ ভয় না পেলে হরর গল্পের সার্থকতা থাকে না।

এই বইটায় ভয় পেয়েছিলাম। ক্লাস সিক্স সেভেনেই ভূত-প্রেত-অশরীরির ভয় কেটে গেছিলো আমার। কিন্তু এই বইটা ক্লাস এইটে পড়ে ভয় পেয়েছিলাম বটে!

তবে বইটাকে পাঁচ তারকা দিয়েছি রুমি চরিত্রটার জন্য। আহা রুমি! ক্লাস এইট থেকে এখন অবধি মাথা থেকে বের হয়নি!

রুমী চরিত্রটা খুবই সাদামাটা, এইজন্য বলছি, ঠিক এই ক্যাটাগরির ছেলেই বেশি দেখা হয়েছে আমার।
তবে যেভাবে বইয়ের কাহিনী এগিয়েছে আর রুমীর যেভাবে ইভোলিউশন হয়েছে, খুবই আশ্চর্য লাগছিলো! স্যারের প্রথম দিকের লেখাগুলো এতোটা সুন্দর! বলার বাইরে...
খুব পছন্দের একটা বই, বার বার পড়েও পুরোনো হয় না।

বারো বছর আগে পড়লেও খারাপ লাগে নি তখন।কিন্তু এখন আসলেই বইটা মনে হইছে যে এতটাও ভাল না।এভারেজ একটা বই লেগেছে।আশির দশকের শেষ দিকের বিচারে হয়ত বইটা সেই লেভেলের হাইপড পেয়েছে বাট এখন পড়ার পর মনে হল আসলেও সাদামাটা একটা গল্প।

নাঃ, এই লেখাটাও জমল না। লেখক তাঁর লেখার কেন্দ্রে যাকে রাখছেন সে প্রথম থেকেই এত দুর্বল আর সহজে-প্রভাবিত চরিত্র হলে লেখার আকর্ষণ কমে যায়। আর এই বইটিও অত্যধিক সরলীকরণের শিকার। সর্বোপরি, "দানব" আর এই বইটি কার্যত একই ছাঁচে ঢালা, ফলে লেখাটা ভীষণ প্রেডিক্টেবল হয়ে পড়েছিল। ভালো লাগল না।

This story was not what I had expected.

I took it to be a 'real' horror story but it appeared as an 'allegory', where the author depicts the bad influence that foreign culture is having on our people, with well chosen words and a cover of so-called horror story.

How can I be so sure? How can I say that I haven't misinterpreted the actual message the author was trying to convey through a foggy veil? Well, the story starts with a guy who wants to get settled down abroad someday, which is his definition of being established. But he goes through the worst experience of his life when he gets attacked by his own native people, some who learned black art in western countries, and a painter who gained success in abroad and then later came back to country to abuse the inferior people. If I'm not mistaken, all these DO mean what I said earlier.

When we read a story, we believe it to be one that entertains us-at least that's what I've learned for so many years that I'm reading. But while reading this story I felt like the author was lamenting the fact that people of this country are biased towards the west, and that they are fascinated about everything they show or do. A deep hatred was reflected throughout the story.

I don't want to drag on the author's perception or values and beliefs anymore. Now lets come to the plot. The title of the story was good. But the first two chapters did not match it. Then after that, the rest of the story didn't match the first two chapters. The writing was neat, just smears of sloppiness here and there. It could be more coherent to the theme if worked harder on.

I would be happy to read more of the author's writings if he simply decided to humor us rather than to try to change our opinions. That's all I have to say.

গল্পের মূল চরিত্র রুমী। শূন্য থেকে উঠে আসা বলতে যা বুঝায় তাইই সে। ছোট বেলায় বাবা খুন হয়, একই সাথে মা কে হারায় (মাকে নানা নিয়ে অন্য যায়গায় বিয়ে দিয়ে দেয়)। ছোট বোনকে নিয়ে কোন মতে চাচাদের সাথে সংসার চালায়। কিছু দিন পরে বোনেরও বিয়ে হয়ে যায়। ফুফু তাকে ঢাকায় নিয়ে আসে পড়াশোনার কথা বলে, যদিও ভাগ্যে জোটে বাসার ফুটফারমেশ করার কাজ। কিন্তু তাতেও দমে যায়নি সে। গল্পের নায়কের মতন ভাল রেজাল্ট করে সে, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হয়ে যায়। এর মাঝে ফুফুর বাসাতেও অবস্থার উন্নতি হয় তার। টিউশনি দিয়ে ভালই চলছিল। দেশের বাহিরে গিয়ে দেশে না ফেরার স্বপ্নও দেখছিল ভাল ভাবেই। কিন্তু হঠাত একদিন দেখা হয়ে যায় কিবরিয়া ভাই এর সাথে। হঠাত করেই সব পরিবর্তন হয়ে যায় তার। দেশকে ভালবাসতে শেখে। ভালই চলছিল সব এই ��র্যন্ত। কিন্তু সব ভাল ভাবে চললে তো কাহিনী আগাবে না। তাই সে সময় কাটানোর জন্য হাত দেখাতে যায় এক জ্যোতিষির কাছে। যে কিনা আসলে ছিল প্রেত সাধক। তারা আসলে সংগপনে মিডিয়াম খুজছিল লুসিফারকে নামানোর কাজে। কাহিনী গভীর দিকে টার্ন নেয় আস্তে আস্তে।

রুমী নামের ছেলেটি শেষমেষ বুঝতে পারে, 'We are the master of our mind'। ব্ল্যাক ম্যজিক, ভুত প্রেতের গল্প খুবি অপছন্দ হলেও এটি পড়তে বিন্দুমাত্র বিরক্তির উদ্রেক হয়নি কেননা উপরোক্ত বিষয়গুলি এই বইয়ের মূল ফোকাস না।

এই বই যেমন ই হোক এর একটা প্রভাব সম্প্রতি আমার উপর পড়েছে। এই বইয়ের প্রধান চরিত্র রুমী কিছুদিন তার আশেপাশের মানুষ মনে মনে যা বলত সব শুনতে পেত। আমারো আজকাল মনে হচ্ছে, আমি কোন মানুষ বা গাছ বা একটা কুকুর অথবা একটা নদী দেখে মনে মনে যা ভাবছি তা যদি তাঁরা শুনতে পেত তাহলে তাঁদের কি ইম্প্রেশন হত?

মুহম্মদ জাফর ইকবাল যদি তার সায়েন্স ফিকশনগুলো বাদ দিয়ে শুধুমাত্র, শুধুমাত্র এবং শুধুমাত্র হররই লিখতেন, তবে এত দিনে তিনি হয়ে যেতেন বাংলাদেশের হরর কিং স্টিফেন কিং!

কথাটা আবেগ থেকে বলা না। 'প্রেত' বইটা পড়েছিলাম সেই টিনএজ বয়সে, ক্লাস সেভেন অথবা এইটে। সেদিন যেমন ভয় পেয়েছিলাম, সেই সাথে মুগ্ধ হয়েছিলাম, প্রায় ২০ বছর পরে পড়ার পরও একই রকম মুগ্ধ হলাম। ভয়টা কমে গেছে, এটাই শুধু সমস্যা।

এই বইটা ছিল হরর জঁনরায় আমার প্রথম প্রেম। ব্ল্যাক আর্ট, শয়তানের উপাসনা সম্পর্কে প্রথম পড়েছিলাম এই বইয়ে, বোধহয় প্রায় পচিশ বছর আগে, এক বন্ধুর কাছ থেকে নিয়ে। বইখানা এতোটাই ভালো লেগেছিল যে সর্বাত্মক চেষ্টা করেছিলাম মেরে দেয়ার। কিন্তু হায়! দ্বিতীয় বার পড়ি সম্ভবত বারো/চোদ্দ বছর আগে এবং শেষবার পড়লাম এই রিভিউ দেয়ার জন্য। শৈশব, কৈশোরের আলিফ লায়লা, ম্যাকগাইভার সহ অনেক কিছুই আকর্ষন হারালেও রুমী, ইভা এবং জোয়ারদারের আকর্ষন কেন যেন ফিকে হয়নি। এখনো রুমীর ভয়ে ভীত, ইভার প্রতি একই সাথে রাগ এবং আকর্ষন, জোয়ারদারের সম্মোহন আর শাহজাহান সুজার প্রতি তীব্র আক্রোশ অনুভব করি।
আচ্ছা ছত্রিশ বছর পর যদি ম্যাভরিক ফিরে আসতে পারে নতুন মিশন নিয়ে, রুমী কেন আসে না?

এই বইটির জন্য আমার আলাদা একরকম ভাল লাগা আছে। কারণ আমার বই পড়া শুরুই হয় এই বইটি দিয়ে। একসময় গল্পের বই পড়া আমার কাছে সময় নষ্ট ছাড়া আর কিছুই ছিল না। কিন্তু এটা পড়ার পর থেকে কীভাবে কীভাবে যেন আরও পড়ার আগ্রহ পেতে শুরু করি। এরপর থেকে আর কখনই বই পড়া আমার কাছে সময় নষ্ট মনে হয়নি। তারপর বেশ কিছু বই পড়েছি, এখনও পড়ে যাচ্ছি এবং আরও অনেক বেশি পড়ার ইচ্ছা পোষণ করি। রুমি যেখানে পড়াশুনা করতো আমারও সেখানে পড়বার সুপ্ত এক ইচ্ছা জেগেছিল। ভাগ্যের খেলায় আজ আমি সেখানেই পড়ছি।
যদিও জাফর ইকবালকে ব্যক্তি হিসেবে তেমন পছন্দ করতে পারি না এখন। তবু তাকে অনেক অনেক ধন্যবাদ। ধন্যবাদ রুমি এবং কিবরিয়া ভাইকেও।

জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের অন্যান্য বইয়ের মতো এই বইটা অতটা ভালো লাগল না। বইয়ের নামের সাথে বিষয়বস্তুর অতটা মিল পেলাম না। প্রথম দিকে কিছুটা প্রেত নিয়ে কথা থাকলেই পরে গিয়ে বিষয়ের আর মিল খুজে পেলাম না।

This book is flawed in so many ways but I weirdly enjoyed. The pacing is so jarring. The book jumps from one plot line to another so fast that you will get whiplash.

I was super intrigued with the black magic plot line but the author dropped it as soon as it came. Same thing happened with multiple plot lines.

Also subtlety isn't a thing here. Most of the things get spelled out for you in the last lines of some chapters. The writing seemed like it was written by a newbie author but zafar iqbal was pretty experienced at that point.

But I enjoyed the horror aspect of it. Rumi was a pretty good protagonist and his character arc was enjoyable even though it wasn't exactly smooth. I also liked the criticism of romanticizing foreign countries but I do wish it was more nuanced. Overall it is pretty entertaining if you're new to horror

কিছু কিছু বইয়ের রেটিং দেখে তার ভালোমন্দ বিচার করা যায় না বরং বইয়ের মান বিচার নির্ভর করে কোন বয়সী পাঠক, কোন সময়ে এবং কতোটা পড়ুয়া পাঠক বইটা পড়ছে তার ওপর!

আমি বলছিনা আমি প্রচন্ড পরিণত পাঠক কিন্তু একটা বিষয় নিশ্চিত বলতে পারি এই বইটা আরো পাঁচ বছর আগে পড়লে হয়তো আমি ও পাঁচ তারকাই দাগাতাম।

কিন্তু এখন এই মুহুর্তে তিন তারকাও আমার কাছে বেশি মনে হচ্ছে।

যাইহোক,অনেকের রিভিউ ই তেই পড়েছি এটা নাকি হরর ঘরানার বই,আমি পুরো বইয়ে হরর এলিমেন্ট খোঁজার অনেক চেষ্টা করেছি কিন্তু আমার কাছে কোনো এঙ্গেলেই এটাকে হরর বলার যথেষ্ট কারণ খুঁজে পাইনি।

কেনো জানি মনে হয়েছে,বইটা প্রচন্ডই সাদামাটা অবশ্য কদিন ধরে টানা প্রচুর থ্রিলার পড়ার কারণেও এটা মনে হতে পারে।

গল্পের প্লট মোটেও স্ট্রং মনে হয়নি,নিঃসন্দেহে জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের নাম আরো যুগ যুগ মনে রাখার জন্য এই বইটা না লিখলেও চলতো।ওভারহাইপড মনে হয়েছে সবমিলিয়ে।

জাফর ইকবালের প্রথম দিকের লেখা। গত কিছু বছর ওনার লেখা গুলো কেন যেন আর জমছে না। আমার বন্ধু রাশেদ, দিপু নাম্বার টু, আমি তপু বইগুলোর নাম শুনলেই এক অবর্ণনীয় ভালোলাগা কাজ করে। সেই জাফর ইকবালের নতুন বইগুলো পড়লে বারবার আশাহত হই। যাই হোক, সেসব কথা থাক! প্রেত বইটা পড়লাম স্যারের ভূত সমগ্র’এর মধ্যে। এটা মোটেই ভূতের গল্প না। এটা মূলত লেখা হয়েছে স্যাটানিজম এবং খানিকটা কল্পবিজ্ঞান নিয়ে। প্লট বেশ ভালো, মুল চরিত্রটা বেশ দুর্বল। গল্পটাও বেশ প্রেডিক্টেবলই। তবে এত কিছুর পরও ভালো লেগেছে বইটা, জাফর ইকবাল স্যারের আগের সেই লেখনশৈলীর মোহে পড়েই পড়েছি। হতাশ করেনি বইটা আমাকে। খানিকটা থ্রিলিং উপাদানও আছে, সাসপেন্স ধরে রাখার চেষ্টা করেছেন লেখক। অনেকদিন পর জাফর ইকবাল পড়লাম এক টুকরো শৈশবকে খুঁজে পাওয়ার জন্য !

বোঝা যায় যে ওনার প্রথম দিকের লেখা। ভূমিকায় উনি লিখেছেন আমেরিকায় থাকাকালীন উনি একটি সিনেমা দেখে খুব ভয় পান, তারপর সেই ভয় থেকেই এই বইয়ের জন্ম। উনি সম্ভবতঃ Rosemary's Baby, বা The Omen সিরিজের কিছু দেখেছিলেন কারণ গল্পের প্রথমার্ধে তার ছাপ স্পষ্ট।
ইভার পেটে রুমীর সন্তান আছে, এর পরেই গল্পটি কার্যতঃ শেষ হয়ে গেছিল এবং আমার ধারণা লেখক শুরুতে ওই পর্যন্তই লিখেছিলেন। কিন্তু সিনেমা এবং বিদেশি গল্পের স্পষ্ট ছাপ থাকায় তিনি এর পরেও গল্পটাকে রাবারের মত টেনে লম্বা করেছেন। ফলে গল্পটি হয়েছে মাংসের সেদ্ধ না হওয়া আলুর মত - এমনিতে বেশ লালা ঝরানো দেখতে কিন্তু ভেতরে টেস্ট নেই।

আমার পড়া জাফর ইকবালের প্রথম বই। সেই কোন ছোটো বেলায় অদ্ভুত এক আতংক নিয়ে পড়েছিলাম বই টা।
