Evening By Evening: Nelson's Royal Classics
Using illustrations drawn from everyday examples, Charles Spurgeon provides uplifting devotions for each day of the year in Evening by Evening . A marvelous orator and compelling writer, Spurgeon weaves the truth of God's Work with his own effective illustrations into inspiring devotions for each day of the year. A Scripture reference and thought-provoking commentary are provided in each devotion to help the reader end each day in God's presence. Throughout this year-long journey, these classic devotions urge readers to reflect on their lives, find comfort in Scripture, and deepen their relationship with God. In one of the daily readings, Spurgeon encourages intercessory prayer because prayer for others is the "sweetest God ever hears." Spurgeon gently persuades the reader to see the goodness and compassion of God, to seek Christ in every area of life, and rest in the promises of a faithful God. Written over a century ago, generations have already cherished this classic collection of daily wisdom, which will endure for generations to come. At the end of a busy day, meditate on the scripture and allow Spurgeon's inspiring messages to draw you closer to God.

About the author
Charles Haddon Spurgeon
6,153 books1,718 followersCharles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.

Quotable, deep prayerful Charles is my favorite to read daily, for inspiration, and thinking and learning about God in a natural, "admiration of the world's wonders" way. Charles so easily makes comparisons, with wind, snow, and other visual descriptions, of God's creation, that stay with you, to pass along to others, I highly recommend any of his books!!

This book is a wonderful daily devotional. I have read several of Spurgeon's books, and this one is just as inspiring as the others. It is written and worded in the old-fashioned "fire and brimstone" style of preaching, quoting straight from the King James Version of the Bible. Spurgeon was a popular preacher in his time, and based on his writings, it is easy to see why.

Restful doctrinal comfort to meditate on and pray through as I go to sleep. Definitely different from Morning by Morning, which energizes and motivates for the day, this book is a tranquilizer in the best sense.

Currently narrating this book as an audio book, and posting the daily readings on youtube. Spurgeon suffered from bouts with depression throughout his life, and there are times when when his mental state is apparent in his writing, but for the most part, I find his writing most inspirational.

November 27, 2022Sturdy devotional of old ... pales compared to Gospel a centered devotionals
Devotions from a bygone era where being Laws oriented passed as being Gospel a centered ... sadly. Having read so many devotionals where the liberating Gospel of Christ bleeds from every page with forgiveness, hope, and joyous life, I simply cannot relate to nor recommend this devotional where the threats of the Law are the chief thing. Though I enjoyed some of his analogies and illustrations I did not find Gospel comfort here at all.

Spurgeon could definitely wield his pen artfully, and there are doubtless some truth nuggets herein, but I felt a sort of literary and spiritual seasickness while reading this. Spurgeon operated with the you're-free-from-sin-but-actually-you're-still-full-of-sin schizophrenia that has left countless saints throughout the centuries with spiritual vertigo. That said, his voice is still important and he should be read, as long as readers have grains of salt handy.

Thought-provoking
I love the classics, they have so many jewels to offer within their pages and this one by Charles Spurgeon is no exception. It has been updated and written in today's language making it easy to read and understand and filled with encouragement that is applicable to daily living. I highly recommend it. I have a few devotionals that I repeat read and this will definitely be one of them.

Appreciate the Honesty
I always enjoy reading books by Charles H. Spurgeon. This book is supported by scriptures and with Charles' honesty. His words are very encouraging with real life situations. "Evening by Evening" had many statements that I did not want to forget so my ebook is highlighted through and through. I will definitely read it again!

Another Excellent Devotional!
Evening by Evening by Charles Spurgeon is easy to read with devotions that are just the right length. Reverend Spurgeon doesn't compromise in this devotion and he tells the reader what needs to be heard.

Daily insight for the soul
This book of daily readings from a Surgeon is a valuable supplement to one's own reading of scripture. The simple truths written in this book are timeless and an encouragement for one who wishes to live by faith.

Perfect way to end everyday with YH's approval!
No matter what kind of day that you had, positive or negative, before you lay your head down, let Mr. Spurgeon leave you with some wisdom for food for thought.

This isn’t a devotional you consume—it’s one that quietly consumes you. Spurgeon has this unnerving gift of taking a single verse and pressing on every hidden bruise of the soul until grace starts bleeding through. I came for a nightly reading; I stayed because it felt like spiritual triage.

Each evening I read a devotional from Charles Spurgeon and Jim Reimann. It was okay, but I will not select this type of devotional from Spurgeon for next year.

Yearly read
I re-read this every year and absolutely love it. It's a glimpse of God's Word each morning and evening that's spot on.
