Torn

8. Coffee seems to be a staple in many an author's life. I don't drink the stuff myself. Oddly enough, I like the smell of it brewing, just not so much the taste of it.
9. I've had a total of two pets in my life. They were two dogs;neither of which belonged to me. They were both freaking crazy because of lack of proper training. I plan to get my own Newfoundland in the near future and train him properly.
10. My two biggest hobbies are reading and writing, but you already knew that, heh? I used to crochet in my late teens but now I save my fingers for the keyboard.
11. One of my favorite horror authors is Stephen King. The only book I've haven't finished by him was Dreamcatchers--It totally grossed me out. When it comes to gay fiction I like Nick Nolan, Cameron Dane, Evangeline Anderson, M.L. Rhodes, Sean Michaels, and Perry Moore. When it comes to het fiction I like Johanna Lindsey, Lisa Cach, Karen Marie Moning, Sasha Lord, Noire and Teresa Medeiros.
12. Some of my favorite movies are Angela's Ashes, Gladiator, Aliens, The Hangover, Pan's Labyrinth, The Losers, Avatar, Apocalypto,Cone Heads,Ghost Busters, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle....and many more.
13. My favorite show that is no longer running new episodes is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My favorite show as of now is a tie between Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs and Intervention.

twins are the devil's joke on Man, and by now, you all should know my feelings on them, so i am just briefly reminding you, so you know what a SACRIFICE i made in reading this book.
and also, erotica is boring, to me. it's just people fucking. books about everest are awesome because i have never climbed everest. sex, i am familiar with that. m/m sex - this is something i have never done, obviously, so it makes it a scootch more interesting, but at the end of the day, it is still body parts entering other body parts. and if i walked into that room, they wouldn't be like, "come, join in!!", so that part of the mystique of self-insertion (careful with the word-choices, karen) into the scene is removed altogether.*
i think sage whistler (certainly her real name) recognized this, and decided to take it one step further. and so: TWINCEST!!! oh, the sultry taboo!! imagine having four hands to masturbate with!! imagine the early formative 69-in-the-womb backstories!! don't ask, don't tell, indeed...(she also has a book entitled pets, of which i am terrified, but must at least take a look at...)
this is hard to rate, so i am not going to star-rate it. on the one hand, it is fuck-larious. on the other hand, there are some problems. for example, "six foot four inches of Emilio Trinovantes stood in the doorway with his big arms crossed over an equally big chest...his height, which was slightly shorter than the twins...the only concession to their father's genes in their build was their height, six-one, and wide shoulders."
okay, so i am no mathematician, but i am positive six-four is taller than six-one. and arms that are equally as big as a chest would be cause for concern.
i also felt icky when one twin repeatedly called the other twin "babe". this is just a personal thing - that word is way skeevy, so the twinniness of it is irrelevant.
and i know it is difficult to find synonyms for "come", but this is not a sexy alternative: "joshua almost came himself. the only thing that saved him from spending was thinking how much better it would be when he came inside of jaime."
SPENDING?? uck.
but this book is a must-read, because i am pretty sure laughter helps you lose weight, makes you smarter, and cures the blues all at once.
it's not much for character development, it is 83 pages and they have sex like ten times, so that doesn't leave much room for psychological insight, but there is some external conflict in in the form of a bully and the to-tell-or-not-to-tell the taller/shorter older brother. plus a lot of male-chickens.
so, despite twins (shudder), despite miles of boning, twincest as a literary concept has to get five stars, right?? we have come a long way, baby...moll flanders just isn't shocking enough for us, anymore...twincest 2011 woot! RBRS 4-eva!!!
* and of course, this is negated by the fact that i have read not ONE but TWO books in the M/M series the administration, which i maintain are excellent books, and more like a cool dystopian series with erotic scenes than erotic literature.

wow just wow. I mean I don't even know what to say. this book just wow.

So, lets just start all interactive like, how in their right mind thinks hey I'm a woman I should be writing about gay male sex? How do you even know what kind of thing gay men like to do?
Things I have learned from this book.
1. gay sex is as boring as heterosexual sex and makes about as bad a plot.
2. logistically it is possible to have anal sex with the bottom lying on their back. (I don't know that I believe this but it happens in the book)
3. That my introject of twins as fraternal should not be assumed to be true when approaching twincest literature.
4. People actually wear stetsons.
5. That your sexuality is extra confusing if you are attracted to women and your twin brother. Are you bi? I mean it's just him.
6. Family is fundamentally accepting of incest in the long run and you shouldn't keep it a secret from them.
Okay, well I just have so many random thoughts on this book, well I just I don't know what to say.
First, I am leaving this book super inspired for nanowrimo. I mean the fact of the matter is that if I buy a bottle of 151 and start writing it after 4 shots, I will definitely write better than this up until the point I die of alcohol poisoning. Since I am actually writing my novel sober, well gosh I know at worst it will be the second worst novel ever written, third if you count we need to talk about kevin. I have never felt better about my writing than I do at this moment.
Next, do you know what happens when you give a 10 year old a thesaurus. I do cause I use to teach creative writing and poetry to them. The poetry kids are especially bad. Here's the thing using a thesaurus is not as easy as it seems.
look up dexterous:
synonyms adept, adequate, adroit, agile, alert, apt, bright, capable, competent, cunning, deft, dexterous, easy, effortless, endowed, equipped, facile, fitted, good, intelligent, knowing, powerful, ready, smart, strong, worthy
see how those synonyms don't mean exactly the same thing as dexterous. This is an important lesson about using thesauri keep it in mind.
so when I hear a rectal muscle described as dexterous, I can come to no other conclusion but that I am looking at extremely poor usage of a thesaurus.
But really that isn't all the writing well it's just, uh well, sex has never been this boring.
I don't even know I'm just speechless, I am left to assume the reason books like this have high star ratings is because people are generally smart enough to know they are going to hate them.
On that note, I would like to thank caris for getting me to read this, and say that now I am comparing your book to it, and really I don't know how you are going to compete.

This novella centers around two ranchers Josh and Jaime who, similar to the 1955 Lolita, have romatic, sexual feelings for each other which cannot be. Unlike Lolita it is not pedophilia but incest, for Josh and Jaime are brothers, identical twin brothers.
At first it was hard to accept the incest. Whistler writes the characters so well that you begin to feel for them; the way they have to hide their love from their brother and the people of the town. I found msyelf very uncomfortable with it in the beginning, but as I continued to read I was feeling their heartache.
The only complaint I really have about this book is that it is too short. There are 92 pages, but the actual story starts on page 7 and ends on page 83. There was more room for character developement and more exploration into how they first began to develop their feelings for each other. Another complaint I had was the typographical errors. There were some spacing errors throughout the book. But they were not enough to distract the reader.
If you're the type of guy who loves to look at your reflection in the mirror and masturbate to it, this would be a good book for you.

I thought this was a sweet story about twincest. I don't know what all the hoopla is about twins having some hot sex. It's not like they are going to have children. It's fiction, get a grip or don't read the stuff. There are no taboos in a piece of fiction.
Joshua and Jamie have always been drawn to each other both mentally and physically. Neither man has ever acted on their feelings which gives the story just enough angst. Jamie comes home from a date and finds Josh asleep on the sofa and thinking that his twin is asleep breaks down sobbing and confesses his desire for his brother. Joshua hears it and gets up and embraces Jamie which opens the flood gates. There is an air of innocence about their love that Ms Whistler has woven which makes the story a sweet love story and more that a hump and bump fest.

I like brocest or in this case twincest books. I don't have an issue with that storyline at all ( as a matter of fact I actually keep an eye out for these kind of stories. :)
I'm also not terribly picky with editing issues or head hopping. ( in this case, that's a good thing, since this book had a few cases of these things)
All in all it's an ok read.
Joshua and Jamie are identical twins and harbor feelings for each other, and it finally comes out. There is some drama ( understandable) and issues like family to deal with, but not too much stress or angst. Just a little bit.
But I just didn't really feel it in this book, not the emotions or the lust or love or the fear. There's a lot of sex, which it ended up skimming over, mostly. I wish I could have enjoyed it more, but it wasn't bad.

Not a good idea since lately both Joshua than Jamie have started to feel a not so very brotherly love for each other. Jamie has long ago admited to be gay but this fact is not a reason to allow him to be free of the guilty for being in love with his brother. And after a long absence of Jamie from the ranch, also Joshua is ready to admit that the jealousy he feels everytime someone else lays his eyes on his brother is not only a sense of protectiveness for his 5 minutes younger twin.
But even if they finally can't deny the attraction, they still have to face the risk to lose the love of family and friends if their secret will be unveil. But for them it's impossible to live together and not show their mutual love, and live apart it's even more impossible, it's like to die.
Joshua is the stronger in the relationship. It's him who has the courage to start the sex and it's him who finally admit that they have to come out. Jamie is gentle and quiet. As the author says, Joshua is the anchor for Jamie, and Jamie is the balance for Joshua.
Torn is a pretty brave story. I have read in the past of twincest, but usually a third person were put in the middle of the twin to "alleviate" the sense of guilty. In Torn Joshua and Jamie have eyes only for each other and so the story is pretty clear. For the rest, it's a classical western romance, made of small town boys, simple life pleasure and true feeling.

To me this book was probably a 3.5 star read. I upped it because it was more than 3. I liked the book even though I don't usually read incest. I tend to like pseudo much better. My favorite part was reading about how the twins were so torn about being together. To me, I think that seemed realistic. I can't imagine anything else happening. I think the biggest thing for me that brought down the rating was the first half of the book. I just felt like there wasn't a ton of build-up to them getting together. I know they are twins and love each other but jumping into sex seemed too fast.
Overall, this book was a fun and relatively quick read. I think the writing was nice and I would definitely try more books.

I really like this genre. Enjoy the story and recommend it. The chemistry is great and how despite the taboo they fight for their love.

Slight story and horrific editing

Pros:
- Interesting idea. Some people might be bothered by the idea of incest regardless of the situation, but incest doesn't bother me unless there's a possibility that a child might result from it and be born with defects. Obviously that's not an issue here.
- Because of the naturally close relationship between the two main characters (their being twins, that is, not their being lovers), the "we're just two halves of the same person" thing that I have come to think of as cliché in romances actually works here. And to Whistler's credit, it's not overdone.
- Sweet, tender love scenes. Both partners are very giving sexually.
Cons:
- Very short - no more than 90 pages. Not worth the price unless you can find it pretty cheap.
- Worst copy editing I have ever seen in a book, self-published or not. In addition to misspelled words and terrible punctuation throughout, there are simple stylistic inconsistencies piled one on top of another. Examples: paragraphs that aren't indented; scene breaks indicated sometimes by white space, sometimes by a more typical divider (*****, for example); white space that occurs accidentally and indicates not a scene break but a copy editing flub; etc.
- Protagonists whose first names begin with the same letter. I realize that oftentimes parents really do name twins like that, but in a book, the similarity in the two names simply slows down reading and disrupts the flow of the text. Even Whistler becomes confused every now and then: occasionally (s)he writes that Jaime does something when it's clear from the context of the sentence that Joshua is the one really doing it (and vice versa).
- Poor editing (and I'm not talking about copy editing now). This includes not just failing to catch that the wrong character name is used here and there, but also leaving inconsistencies in the story (for example, in the first chapter, saying that the twins' older brother is 6'4" but not quite as tall as they are and then saying that the twins are 6'1") and missing numerous POV shifts throughout the story.
- One character I found a little unbelievable. (Possible SPOILER here) The twins' brother's best friend shows up and wreaks havoc as the story's villain, but I found it hard to believe that their brother could ever have been such good friends with this guy, since the brother turns out to be pretty decent.
Overall comments: If you don't mind (or recognize) poor editing and enjoy angsty romance, by all means read it if you can find a reasonably priced copy. If you're looking for a great plot and/or have learned (and have retained) basic rules about English grammar and--especially--punctuation, this book will drive you crazy.

First off, since some jerk decided to leave some smart aleky comment. Yes I pirated this book. ACCIDENTLY. It was under the writing section of a forum and in word format. So I assumed it was by the original poster. No cover art, no formatting, it looked like something someone typed up (there weren't even chapters). The last sentence contained blurb with the author, ISBN and the like. The file has been deleted. If I had given this 5 stars and cried tears of joy (rather than revulsion), then I'd have headed on over to Amazon and bought the book. So don't shat your pants and get over it? Thanks!
My first m/m "novel". It was awful. Just awful.
Now I am new at this. I'm guessing the point of disgusting literature such as this is the sex scenes. Screw character development, plot, building up to a climax, or even grammar. I thought editors checked grammar, made sure the story made sense? It says Emilio is 6'4'' and the twins were a little over 6'. The following paragraph reads: Emilio’s mother, Mary, had been half-Mexican and half Irish. His height, which was slightly shorter than the twins, was the result of their mother’s genes.. 6'4''< 6'1''? And I thought I sucked at math. Jamie bent down and licked Jamie's nipple? His pores were trying to 'purge the intoxicants'? Jamie's stressed jeans?
2)The ending was sappy. Siblings having sex is simply disgusting. I have four brothers. If I found out two of them were sexing each other, I certainly wouldn't walk away for a quiet moment, come back embrace them and learn to accept their incestious fling. No one would be okay with that. It was like trying to give a porn movie a Disney ending. That's just not the way it works.

Short, as in under 100 pages, and sweet. I read this one for the novelty of the twincest - brotherly love. It was good but, honestly, it read more like a long (original character) slash fic, than a short professionally written M/M romance.
Have you noticed that much slash fic sex sounds the same? Like there is a playbook for how boys do it. Boy bottoming receives oral sex. Boy topping slips a finger or two in, scissoring them. During intercourse, the bottom always comes again, before the top follows. I think it all comes from one of those gay boy "how to write slash" webpages. And the girls have just been lemmings since then, repeating what they read.
Another thing, the brothers are Joshua and Jamie. Very "cute", but when you read such similar looking names fast, you're likely to mix them up.
So, yeah, good, but not novel good. Not only for the story itself, but the length.
Oh, and another note just for the physical book itself. Have you ever noticed some small press books don't "feel" right? They have that same quality latex gloves have. Like they've got this powder that makes them feel slightly wet or slimy or something. This is one of those.
That's a concern for me because I remember getting a book like that before where the paper or the powder or something actually caused an allergic reaction. I got hives where the book touched my bare skin.
No reaction from this one, but it did leave me wanting to wash my hands after I put the book down. In other words, maybe I should have gotten the ebook for this one.

Not really the best twin book I've read, but decent. Jaime and Joshua seem to be almost practically oblivious to their attraction or at least very good at hiding it from one another ... which is odd, considering it was said [many times:] about how they could sense things about each other so much and so easily.
It didn't jive with me that practically the moment they came to terms and got settled with the thing between them, all of a sudden they agree that their other brother has to know. I mean ... um, weird? Sure, they don't keep much from him, but telling him RIGHT THIS SECOND kind of made me step back and go, 'wtf are they THINKING?!'
The ending was kind of abrupt, and about half-way through it became increasingly hard to tell the difference between Jaime and Joshua. Maybe that was intended - maybe not. I expected Joshua to be the lead most of the time, not Jaime, or at least if the younger DID prove to be the pushier of the two of them, there would be somewhat of a bigger distinction. Brothers are not the same person, not even twins, and while some may be quiet in person and growlers in the sack, that distinction was never truly made. In the 'together' scenes I had to go back and reread the names to figure out who was doing what because there was no real hesitation in either of them, no real hint as to their regular personalities in what they were doing.
So ... worth reading as an in-between, but there are better ones out there, including Sage Whistler's other twin novel, "Broken."

I am not a fan of twincest stories. However, since I am reading this for my September Category Challenge, I have decided to put aside my own instinctive and automatic squick reaction, and just read this story as I would any other.
Well... It was not a very good story either. The two brothers are superficially drawn - the author tells us multiple times that they are two halves of one whole, but she does not show this to us. I also do not believe the angst level was very realistic in the beginning of the story, especially if they both wanted each other since their teenage years, but only did anything about it when they were 21. I wanted to see their indecision, the self-hate, the struggle, but it was glossed over in favor of too many repetetive sex scenes. Their final conflict with Emilio was also too quickly resolved, and I was disappointed in the extreme.
And just to prove that this is not my natural dislike for twincest speaking, I recently read a story that was VERY well done, and had it not been fanfic, would have given it 4 stars.

For those who didn't understand from the book summary, this is a story with incest (twincest in this case). A rather risky theme that isn't done that often, I'd be curious to see more~
It wasn't too long and although there was lots of hot sex, they still dealt a little with the necessary issue when the time came. Both of them are pretty tortured about their feelings for each other in the beginning and they don't quite know how to deal with it. The fact that they have an older brother (very much in charge of the household) living with them complicated matters a lot. His reaction when the truth comes out in the open was nothing like a fairy tale either, something I think was good. You don't get over a shock like this in a second after all.
There's also some added angst in the form of said brother's friend, who has a mean eye on the youngest twin~

I'm giving this one a 3.5 - 4, basically because I really did like the characters and I think the author is brave to have written it in the first place. The subject matter doesn't squick me in the least - a lot slash fiction definitely cured that and made it acceptable, at least in fic.
I would have liked to see more of the feelings leading up to the actual incest - stuff that maybe happened when the boys were growing up, etc., but the book is a little too short for that. I'm not sure about the logic behind telling their brother right away, and Jaime's dream about him and his friend Reid for some reason made me think he had been abused by Reid -I guess that's just how his asshole-ness came out.
Like i said though, I did like the characters and I did think they had distinct and separate personalities and they made me feel their pain, so I did like it. Going to read Broken next.

Well, if you look at this as a mere PWP with twincest to spice it up, then this book isn't bad at all.
It has a steady pacing without much drama - only build up for more steaminess XD.

Not a book for everyone as it is about m/m incest - but if you can deal with that the book was a good read. The boys are pretty naive to think they'll be able to keep their secret though - small town, no longer pursuing girls... Not happening!

The story takes off from the get-go and you're not only pulled into the scene by the vivid imagery and detailed scenes, you're slammed against the wall with the force of the attraction between these two and the delicious smut scenes therein. A definite must-read!
