Beautiful writing. I am rating it 3 stars in relation to her later work, "Why Things Burn", which I gave 4. Some of these poems stick in my head, popping up a line here and a phrase there throughout the day, often months after a reading.
Sealey Challenge 2023 book one. I decided to start with one of the first poets I fell in love with. I had to purchase this book on Ebay and I was excited, it's probably been on my to-read-list for years! I found the opening poems to be heavy-handed in a way that lessened the effectiveness. I also felt some of these poems did not need to be included in the manuscript. But it's when we reach the middle of the manuscript, when the dead animals start to manifest and the sexual horror--that's where I see the Gottlieb I fell in love with, the Gottlieb who went on to sharpen her voice. She is an incredible writer and when I have the money I am definitely ordering her latest book!
