I really liked the writing. However the plot was very, very slow and it felt as though it was lacking almost.

this book was a revelation - a really well written, and engrossing story about life in the north of England in the late 19th century. Have already ordered the second in the series and i large hardback is awaiting..!

First read this in 1991. Decided to re-read it and enjoyed as much the second time around. Can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy. I didn’t find it slow at all as some have said. Very interesting for those with Sheffield, Derbyshire or Nottingham connections.
