Thomas Jefferson: Architect of Freedom

Rate this book
One of the great thinkers of all time, Thomas Jefferson helped shape America in its early years, and his ideas continue to inspire us today. His amazing contributions include not only writing the Declaration of Independence, but his actions as the United States’ third President, as well as his influence as a scientist, inventor, farming pioneer, and educator. The engrossing life of this founding father is fully captured in this richly detailed biography, from Jefferson’s childhood in a simple wooden farmhouse in Virginia through his careers in law, diplomacy, and politics, in addition to his marriage to his beloved Martha and the family tragedies they endured.

Thomas Jefferson was a man who believed in human rights and thought everyone deserved freedom and liberty, which is what he is most known for. He grew up in Virginia where both his parents, Jane and Peter were rich landowners. During his young years, Thomas appreciated reading, nature, and had a passion for playing the violin. Peter, his father, died when Thomas was 11 years old, it wasn’t until Thomas reached the age of 21, that he inherited all his father had and continued the hard work his father had started. He went to the college of William and Mary in Virginia. It was there that he met his mentor, who was a law instructor, named George Wythe, who inspired him to become a lawyer. Jefferson’s biggest accomplishment was the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, written by himself, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. This famous document stated that the colonies were independent and free from the British trying to rule over them, and that the colonies were willing to fight for their freedom as well as their liberty. Some people call him “The Father of the Declaration of Independence” since he was the one to write the first draft. After this document was edited by other members, it was presented to the congress. This document of is one of the most preserved documents in all history. Thomas Jefferson started to get sick in 1825, when his health started getting worse and worse. He died in July 4, 1826 on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of independence, along with his beloved friend, John Adams. As one can see, Thomas Jefferson changed many American lives, and changed present day America, since without him, America and most countries wouldn’t be independent.

Many lessons can be learned from Jefferson’s life, for instance, if you believe in something, fight for it, since you might it consider it useless but it might change many lives. Jefferson changed many lives by installing the concept of freedom as well as liberty. After reading this enriching nonfiction book, readers start to consider Jefferson as a hero since if he hadn’t thought of following his instincts by writing the Declaration of Independence, then most of the countries in the world would still be striving for freedom. Therefore, after reading this intriguing book, one can see that Thomas Jefferson helped America develop values of freedom and liberty. Thomas Jefferson, harsh childhood, endured many hard moments, which made him the man he was, and gave him the urge to do all he did for people. He is considered a universal hero, since he cared for others, and didn’t judge people based on their social class. He was one of the few men in the world who though freedom was something everything deserved and he decided to change the world, since he though everyone was worth it.

Rita Thievon Mullin portrays Jefferson’s life in a very precise and astonishing way throughout this book. I would recommend this book to all adults, and students who like to know more about ancient heroes. Many people may here of Thomas Jefferson, but few really know who he is and all he has accomplished, but after reading this engrossing book, readers start to realise how Jefferson changed the world, and many lives because of his determination to fight for what he believed was right. Jefferson wished to be remembered mainly as the author of the Declaration of Independence, and he is. I would also recommend this book to middle school students because of the way it is written, since it is full of amazing pictures and isn’t full of superfluous details that get you confused. While reading this book, the vocabulary used is not hard to understanding, therefore it is not very challenging, just full of knowledge. Also, I think it is very important to state that after reading this book, you definitely have more background knowledge on Jefferson, as well as America during Jefferson’s era.

A good, concise biography of Thomas Jefferson, with lots of cool pictures. I've been interested in learning more about Jefferson since visiting Monticello back in 1987, but normally don't like big, long, dry history books. I found this book at the Mt Rushmore visitor's center store last year and it turned out to be perfect for me. It's concise and to the point, has some great pictures of Jefferson, and related people and places. But it's not so simple that it feels like a grade school textbook. Perfect for a non-history buff like me.

Read this with my 10 year old - its more challenging than the 'Who is...?' biographies - which is why we chose it and i am so glad we did - this book ignited an interest in colonial times - I just bought the Ben Franklin biography for myself!

Perhaps the title of the book, "Thomas Jefferson: Architect of Freedom," is somewhat misleading. I was expecting the book to have an emphasis on the ideologies of Jefferson; instead, it gives an overview of Jefferson's life.

I have yet to read any giography that nails down Jefferson the man. He should be Jefferson the chameleon. This is an excellent work.
