Originally published in 1979 by The Green Tiger Press, The Starcleaner Reunion is one of bestselling author/illustrator Cooper Edens most unique and compelling works, so much so that it is currently being adapted into a ballet. It is a book which takes us into a child's dream of the past in which the stars had become darkened and forgotten. We are led on this visionary adventure by a fancifully dressed angel, and together with the aid of the starcleaners - who carry buckets of soapy water and balance atop ladders - the brilliance of the night sky is uncovered as well as deep truths about separation and loneliness and the remedy for darkness of all varieties.
This is a wonderful old book I want to share, could be a great mentor texts for older students writing myths or fantasies. The story is about the origins of the stars, and begins in a young boy's dream as he realizes there are dark stones that need to be polished for all the world to see. Illustrations show a large group of men who manage to find ladders tall enough to reach the stones. In the rest of the story, the stars are offered a reunion, but the house they come to keeps bursting and then another house forms until the stars disappear! The story ends with another surprise. It's a fantastical story with brilliant illustrations. I don't want to give away more!
The illustrations alone are so painstakingly cute, and I wanted to love this for how much they charmed me. But, the language is so dense, and so hard to navigate. I can't imagine any child following this with anything approaching comprehension. It is perhaps too obscure. I still thoroughly enjoyed it, but wouldn't recommend it for a plotline...just pictures.
Oh wow, this,, I'm going to be thinking over this book for a while, especially the illustrations, something in my brain really fascinates over it. It's like looking at old dreams, or the in-between places of wonder and world.
