Mild depressions are so insidious that sufferers often don't seek help. They think, "that's just the way I am. There's really not much I can do about it." As Dr. Michael Thase and science writer Susan S. Lang reveal, they can do something about it. Persistent mild depression, which afflicts up to 35 million Americans, can be readily and permanently cured. In Beating the Blues , Thase and Lang show how chronic mild depression can be relieved by learning strategies that help sufferers to recognize and change negative and distorted thinking patterns that lead to a downward spiral of pessimism. They reveal that a combination of medication and therapy has been shown to be the most effective treatment for mild depression, with an impressive 85% of patients experiencing full relief. Thase and Lang also discuss when a person should seek help from a therapist and what kinds of therapy seem the most effective. They outline the safer new antidepressants that are helpful for both mild and severe depressions, detailing each drug's strength and weakness; and examine alternative therapies, including stress management, physical exercise, acupuncture, supplements, and other mind/body therapies. Finally, they provide in-depth discussions of mild depression in children, adolescents, college students, and elderly parents, as well as those with chronic stress. Beating the Blues is an inspiring and empowering book, offering everything a person needs to know in order to overcome mild depression.
Beating the Blues targets dysthymia, chronic mild depression. This text is much more a self-help book than an academic text. Dr. Michael Thase and science writer Susan S. Lang offer hope and inspiration to clients.
The treatments and discussion along the lifespan are safe guidelines. On Page 96, their description of Cognitive-behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP)is one of the best I have encountered. Although I personally disagree with the use of medication, their research was thorough on the uses of atypical or "designer" medication. Informally, I have noticed some of my clients have marked improvement on Wellbutrin when prescribed by a psychiatrist who completes a full assessment.
Nutrition, diet, acupuncture, magnetic pulses, homeopathy and other alternative therapies are covered.
Thase and Lang show how chronic mild depression can be relieved by learning strategies that help clients recognize negative thinking patterns that lead to dysthymia.
Reading Beating the Blues can be a great adjunct to therapy as a homework assignment.
An excellent east to understand book that outlines not only what Dysthymia is and how it presents but how it differs from other types of depression such as moderate or severe depression. The chapter on the different type of anti-depressants available and how they work as well as common and severe side effects is excellent reference material to feel informed, as is the appendix of the same in the back of the book.
Covering everything from identification and clinical scoring checklists to what can be done outside of just medication to help those with this often debilitating condition. It has chapters on Dysthymia in the elderly also.
Overall a very easy book too read with not too much psychological jargon that the layperson can't understand. The infirm action on how this firm of depression changes brain chemistry is excellent. It's also full of links to helpful websites and support tools. I'd recommend this book to anyone with Dysthymia, or suspect they do as well as for Carers and professionals. Excellent read.
This is an actual line from the first chapter: "If you do nothing, you may be doomed to years washed out in a monotone of bleakness." lololooololololol. I can't even with that. Aside from the hyperbole in the first chapter, the rest of the book was actually quite helpful and included clinically proven information on dysthymia or PDD. It is slightly outdated and would love it if they released a newer and updated edition of this.
My therapist mentioned in passing that she loved the quotes in this book so I went home and bought it. I liked the quotes too and felt like the book was helpful even though I don't really have depression.
This book covered more behavioral practices and therapies than The Chemistry of Joy and about had the book dives into medication and herbal remedies for depression. Information but not warm and fuzzy the way I like self help books usually.
The book is written in a dry style which mixes both lay and academic styles throughout. Overall, I wasn't particularly impressed by this volume on dysthymia - on the other hand, it is the only book I have read that particularly targets dysthymia and I was fairly impressed by the vast number of aspects the book approached fairly extensively. The chapters on medication and forms of psychological treatment were especially info-packed.
A pretty comprehensive book on dysthemia with reviews of mild to chronic behavior and review of different therapies and medications. In the behavior modification section there are many strategies of thought modification and positive thinking. the book covers all ages, gender, genetic predisposition, situational and ptsd depression. Its not a long book and easy to read, forward, back and re-read if needed.
The book was very interesting, although it didn't contain any new information for me. I was looking for more in depth info with regards to self-treatment and self-help. Lots of good info on meds and general treatment though, as well as defining dysthymia symptoms and helping to identify risk factors.
