At various times, British author Peter Cave has been a reporter and an newspaper editor and a magazine editor. He is best known in literary circles for the number of novelizations he has done for television shows.
Way back in 1976, at the age of 12, I was a big fan of The New Avengers....& I still am! Peter Cave's novel, based on the television episode, may not be a great piece of writing but it is a huge amount of fun. It expands on the episode quite well & it's nice to revisit the adventures of Steed, Purdey & Gambit once again. I still love all of the series of The Avengers & The New Avengers & named our daughter Emma, Catherine & Tara after the three leading characters from the programme. When she was older I explained where her names came from & she said "Well, Dad, at least you didn't call me Purdey!"
This book simply feels like a written version of an episode of The New Avengers. Which is exactly what it is and should be. There are no great surprises. Peter Cave is an excellent, safe pair of hands when it comes to TV novelisations. The story involving Russian agents and sleeper cells is standard fare and good fun. The three main characters, Steed, Purdey and Gambit, are well-written and true to the TV characterisations. If you’re a fan of the TV series, and even if you aren’t, these TV tie-in novels are highly enjoyable and well worth a read.
