From many earnest hearts there is rising a cry for more more power in our personal conflict with the world, the flesh and the Devil; more power in our work for others. The Bible makes the way to obtain this longed-for power very plain. There is no presumption in undertaking to tell "How to Obtain Fullness of Power in Christian Life and Service" for the Bible itself tells, and the Bible was intended to be understood. The Bible statement of the way is not mystical nor mysterious; it is very plain and straightforward. This book was written by the eminently qualified Dr. R. A. Torrey who held pastorates with the famous Moody Church in Chicago and the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles. One of the greatest evangelists who ever lived, he led worldwide revival campaigns which shook Australia, England and America. Torrey was a great Bible teacher filled with the Holy Spirit and his books have helped people to understand the Bible and to win souls for the Lord.
Reuben Archer Torrey studied at Yale and in Germany before taking up a pastorate in the United States. As a gifted intellectual, administrator, and Bible teacher, he went on to pastor Moody Church in Chicago and became D.L. Moody's closest associate. In his later years, he traveled the world as an evangelist speaking to millions in Australia, New Zealand, India, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Japan, China, Hawaii, Germany, the United States, and Canada. Torrey edited the last two volumes of the monumental "The Fundamentals" and was instrumental in the founding of both Moody Bible Institute and BIOLA University.
More than a century ago, but the message still relevant to the modern times. The teaching was quite straightforward though to live in this message and attained fullness in it was not easy.
I reread this little book because Neil Thomsen had given me another copy of it. It is essentially a list of five things which are essential to discipleship. These are the Word of God, the blood, the Holy Spirit, prayer, and the surrendered life. The author marshals all the biblical information about each of these important areas.
I would say that the authors most important chapter is the one on the Holy Spirit. This was an emphasis of the ministry of Torrey. In the biography of him it mentions that D. L. Moody was constantly urging him to preach about the Holy Spirit. I would say that this is an evangelical precursor to the Pentecostal movement. I just wonder what might have happened if the Pentecostal movement had not burst out in the early years of the 20th Century? Would it mean that positions like that of Torrey would be much more main stream?
This is a good little devotional book, and it is a good example of the type of preaching that was dominant in Torrey’s day. Topical presentation ruled the day and Torrey shows a breadth of understanding of the Bible’s teaching on these subjects. This book was well worth reading.
The Book I read is God's Power in Your Life... it's the same book as How To Obtain Fullness of Power just renamed. The way R. A. Torrey writes is just so easy to understand and powerful. I have marked and tagged the crap out of this book. It helped me understand as a Christian how to keep the Holy Spirit in my daily life, as well as opened my eyes to things I myself have not been good at keeping the worlds negative vibe out of my head. If you allow the devil to feed you ugly negative junk in your head and ears then you yourself feel that, and it leads to depression, ugly thinking and ugly talking to people and yourself. I'm not about drama and negative, but sometimes people suck you in then you have to remember No Satan go and get back to the one who truly loves me and you God. This book I recommend to everyone. Remember if you allow ugly in your life don't take it, love yourself and your neighbors as God has loved you.. I love you too be beautiful and shine positive.. Gina Clabo
I enjoy this book from the beginning to the end. I have learned and motivated to surrender everyday to God in a proper way: Bible way and prayer way.
I like the honest thinking and simple but powerful writing of Mr. Torrey, it’s like talking to a real and caring pastor who wants you to grow spiritually.
...unless you are ready to be challenged and even convicted of sin, laziness and general apathy toward the things of God! On second thought, read it anyway.
This book is an injection of all the start that you will need in becoming a more intelligent Christian. This is for those that truly believe and is searching for more to be more in Christ
Just like Torrey’s other books, this book contains timeless truths that Christians must lay hold of inorder to have an effective life of service. Absolutely amazing.
