Reuben Archer Torrey studied at Yale and in Germany before taking up a pastorate in the United States. As a gifted intellectual, administrator, and Bible teacher, he went on to pastor Moody Church in Chicago and became D.L. Moody's closest associate. In his later years, he traveled the world as an evangelist speaking to millions in Australia, New Zealand, India, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Japan, China, Hawaii, Germany, the United States, and Canada. Torrey edited the last two volumes of the monumental "The Fundamentals" and was instrumental in the founding of both Moody Bible Institute and BIOLA University.
Practical, challenging books on Bible study and prayer. There is such a temptation to only read God’s word yet never actually take the time and discipline to study and handle it for oneself. This book gives practical ways to get into Bible study and commends it as hard work yet absolutely vital if a believer wants to hold to the faith and walk worthy. Our churches would be so different and there would be a greater power and effectiveness if we were a people committed to daily, personal Bible study and prayer.
A must read for anyone who is serious about wanting more than just knowledge
If you’re serious about walking a life with God, this book is a great place to start. Prayer and the study of God’s word is the most important habit a Christian should seek to build and hold in his/her life. The short and concise presentation of both topics make it ideal for a busy life pace of today’s society.
Good practical pointers. He mentions Catholics as not being Christians so I take issue with that but it was the era. He mentions the culture going astray because of "dancing, card playing and the theatre..." what would he think today??? Given the era he also singles out Christian Science: Mary Baker Eddy was very famous at the time and a real threat to some...Less so now...Mentions Methodists loosing members as of 1900...again what is happening today? Very few escape his pen... Practical points about how to pray so that people are not trying to get around God (Prosperity Gospel, Faith Healing, etc) HE DID ASK HOW MANY PEOPLE READ THE BIBLE FOR 1 HOUR A DAY? By that of course he means read, study and pray...Good challenging question for every Christian.
Such a treasure trove of practical help for a disciple of Christ. I'm not sure I agree with some of his assertions regarding prayer, but by and large his guidance appears sound and Biblical. It certainly gives you a lot to chew on.
