Détente and Confrontation: American-Soviet Relations from Nixon to Reagan

Rate this book
In this revised edition of his well-received 1985 volume, Raymond Gathoff incorporates newly declassified secret Russian as well as American materials into his account of American-Soviet relations from 1969-1980. The book considers both the broader context of world politics and internal political considerations and developments, and examines these developments as experienced by both sides. It also recounts how differences in ideology, perceptions, aims and interests were key determinants of both US and Soviet policies.

Extremely detailed account. This is one of if not the best books written about the relationship between the United States and the USSR. I lived through those years and really never knew what was really going on. Raymond Garthoff explains in a non biased way what was happening. In many instances he was a first hand participant. Extremely well researched and documented. After reading this book it makes me wonder what is really happening today that I am unaware of. If you have even a passing interest in this subject this book is a must read.
