Ανάμικτα τα συναισθήματα για το «Η ζωή η ίδια» του Taibo. Ο συγγραφέας αναλώνεται στο στήσιμο μιας φανταστικής πόλης με πολύ καλογραμμένους χαρακτήρες και ιδιαίτερη αίσθηση του χιούμορ, αλλά η υπόθεση είναι πολύ φτωχή. Διαβάζεται πολύ γρήγορα, αλλά με χάλασε όταν έφτασα τη μέση του βιβλίου και συνειδητοποίησα ότι δεν είχε συμβεί κάτι το αξιοσημείωτο. Σε γενικές γραμμές μου άρεσε, αλλά έχει ήδη ξεχαστεί.

Το «Η ζωή η ίδια» είναι ένα κοινωνικοπολιτικό νουάρ, whydunit crime novel, εμπλουτισμένο με το καυστικό χιούμορ του Taibo II.
Όπως λέει ο ήρωας του, Χοσέ Δανιέλ Φιέρρο σε ένα γράμμα στην γυναίκα του Άννα,
«Είναι ένα μυθιστόρημα με σκατογαμημένα εγκλήματα, αλλά το σημαντικό δεν είναι τα εγκλήματα, είναι (όπως σε κάθε μεξικανικό αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα) τα συμφραζόμενα. Εδώ σπανίως θα αναρωτηθεί κανείς ποιος σκότωσε, γιατί αυτός που σκοτώνει δεν είναι , αυτός που θέλει το θάνατο. Υπάρχει απόσταση ανάμεσα στο εκτελεστή και τον παραγγελιοδότη. Όποτε το σημαντικό είναι συνήθως το γιατί».
Πάντα απολαμβάνω να διαβάζω Taibo II. Λατρεύω την ιδιαίτερη γραφή του, το χιούμορ του, όση πίκρα και αν κρύβει.

I've sd it before & I'll say it 'til my dying day.. maybe w/ a few words missing in its last iteration, Taibo is the bomb, the shit, the bee's-knees, the extrusion on the fidelity-smurf. Life Itself was no exception.. but it was exceptional. It begins w/ informative author's notes:

"Note II: For the non-Mexican reader, the PRI is the official government party that, since the close of the 1920s, has ruled Mexico in a civil dictatorship rife with violence and electoral fraud; members of the PRI are called "priítistas." "Cacique" is a term for the political boss of an agrarian zone; originally the word meant "Indian chief." Since the 1920s, Mexican labor unions have operated under heavy government control; in their opposition to these organizations, "red" independents refer to them as "yellow unions."" - p -iv (reviewer's numbering: it means 4pp before p 1)

It's this sort of educational background that makes these novels so important to me. Of course, what helps is that they're also of interest to me just as writing & stories.

For those of you who may be too young to remember, an "Olivetti" is a brand of typewriter, so he's asking for the things that provide the ink that the keys impress upon. As for "Machette"? I don't know his or her work so I look them up online & find nothing. BUT THAT'S BECAUSE THE NAME WAS MISSPELLED "Machette" instead of "Manchette". Later in this bk it was spelled correclty so I looked for books by him again & ordered 5 online.

"One and a half yards from the entrance he stopped in front of a bookcase of Latin American literature when he saw Soriano's There Will Be No More Pain or Forgetting. A book he'd been looking for for years. Beside it, The Compañeros by Rolo Díez, just out, a novel they talked about in Mexico City, about the last years of the Argentine madness and the guerilla movement. He went on browsing, squatting before the bookshelves. He had forgotten why he was there." - p 109

That wd be Osvaldo Soriano (1943-1997), an Argentinian writer. I just ordered his Winter Quarters: A Novel of Argentina & A Funny Dirty Little War in English & Díez's Tequila Blue in English — the point being, obviously, learn from those who know.

"The novel continues. It is a novel about tattoos. Its characters are a commander of the judicial police who has a tattoo on his ass that says: Who arrives here does not leave alive; also a North American who has a tiny rose on her forearm with the phrase Loneliness is the heart of life. Also, so it won't be too easy, an albino gunman who has a plumed serpent tattooed on his left arm.

"As you will see, the novel appears to belong to Vázquez Montalbán and not to me." - p168

The basic plot is that the main character is a crime fiction writer who's asked to be the chief of police in a town where the politics are successfully 'progressive' enuf for the forces-that-be who're opposed to such progressiveness to try to undermine it. Hence, previous sympathetic chiefs have been murdered.

At the same time that this new police chief takes the job seriously & conducts actual investigations he's also a bit flip about aspects of it.

""Do I get a sheriff's badge?" he asked his second-in-command.

""The truth is, I never asked. They do give ID."

""Without a badge, I feel half out of uniform," said José Daniel, stopping at a toy stand. He picked through the buttons: there were Snoopys, ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, Che Guevara, the Sandinista Front, Rafael and Rocio Durcal. He chose one that showed Spiderman in a posture of challenge." - pp 19-20

Armed w/ a Spiderman badge, he's sure to get out of sticky situations.

""Serious as in do people kill? Yes, they kill, and to tell you the truth, I don't like it. I don't like it when they kill in cold blood. I don't like it when they let fear loose in the streets. This was the land of the bosses, sir, a company town; here they beat you up for breathing, and even more for smiling. There's a lot of bastards running around loose - - - A lot of fucking bastards running around loose. And they don't like what we're doing."

""And what are we doing?" said José Daniel, staring at the assistant chief of his yet-unseen police force of his still half-guessed-at city.

""Popular power, my good man. What kind of a fucking question is that, excuse me? Do you think you could be chief of police of a PRI town?"" - pp 21-22

So there you have it. Turning a decteive story novelist into a police chief & having him be the hero in an adversarial former-company-town environment is a very interesting premise for a novel IMO.

The writer character inflects his behaviour w/ literary & filmic references.

""Are you speaking to the assistant police chief of Santa Ana?" asked José Daniel in full drag, changing from Bogart into Clint Eastwood and pointing a finger at the suited man's belly. "You are obstructing a police inquiry.""

[..]

""Look here, the big honcho of the CTM*, neither more nor less," said Blind Man, pointing to a fat man in a blue shirt standing in front of the door.

""Are you in line for the women's bathroom, sir?" asked José Daniel, doing a Lew Archer with a light touch of Woody Allen."

"*Federation of Mexican Workers, a yellow union." - p 23

""Who locked you up, ladies?" asked José Daniel.

""Domínguez, the owner."

""Him, Domínguez, and the yellow leader of the CTM, Martin Guerra, that revolting fathead."

""None of that now," threatened the fathead.

""To jail with the two of them, Blind Man," said José Daniel. "Accused of kidnapping. We'll indict them right now."" - p 24

Ha ha! If only! The writer-turned-policeman pursues 2 of the town's corrupt bosses for his 1st arrest b/c they were trying to intimidate employees out of labor organizing. Ahhhh.. Here's another sample villain:

"Number three, all agree, and numbers one and two on certain anonymous lists, Manuel Reyna, Blackie. A hired gun who runs the shock troops of the PRI in Santa Ana. Responds directly to the will of the state capital, doesn't treat with the local powers. Everyone says it was he who fired on the April 20 demonstration with a machine gun from the church tower. Someone told me that before being a gunman he sold agricultural equipment. They call him Blackie because he's an albino. Good to know that. Better to notice him from afar." - p 43

A prostitute in the employ of a local boss attempts to compromise the new police chief. He ejects her from his room & pulls an act of poetic justice:

""Greñas? . . . Do you know where Don Sabás lives? . . . There's a naked woman in the hallway of my hotel, a whore whom I believe is named Maria. Arrest her on morals charges, and take her to Don Sabás . . . That's what I said . . . Are you married? . . . Better yet . . . Take her to the front door and tell them that the chief of poilce ordered she be delivered there, because the lady gave that as her address . . . Exactly."" - p 62

Beautiful.

It seems that almost everything I chose to comment on in this novel is a literary reference:

""My neighbor stands up at night when he thinks that nobody sees him," said the voice on the phone. José Daniel does not need to ask who was its owner. He reacted as a character out of Earl Derr Biggers.

""What else can you tell me, Mrs. Ling?"" - p 182

Earl Derr Biggers being, of course, the author of the Charlie Chan novels. Η καλύτερη κριτική για το βιβλίο του αγαπημένου Πάκο είναι ένα μικρό απόσπασμα από αυτό: «Ήταν ένα μυθιστόρημα «αποκαλυφθέντων παθών» για τον λόγο ότι δεν ήταν «κρυφών παθών»,επειδή για αυτά τα τελευταία κανείς δεν γράφει πια». Ένα αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα που δεν ακολουθεί την τυπική δομή του ντετέκτιβ που αποκαλύπτει τον δράστη αλλά η ζωή δεν είναι ίδια πάντοτε..

Η ιστορία εκτυλίσσεται στον κόκκινο δήμο «Σάντα Αννα» του Μεξικού, τόπος στον οποίο από τη μία δε συμβαίνει τίποτα επειδή συμβαίνουν πολλά πράγματα, και από την άλλη συμβαίνουν πολλά πράγματα επειδή δε συμβαίνει τίποτα.

Είναι ένας δήμος που το σημαντικότερο είναι ότι ξεσήκωσε το λαό. ΄Η αντίστροφα ο λαός ξεσήκωσε το δήμο του.

Σε αυτόν το δήμο λοιπόν τοποθετείται ο κεντρικός ήρωας στη θέση του αρχηγού της αστυνομίας μετά από παρότρυνση του δημάρχου της πόλης που θεωρεί ότι η εμπειρία του ως συγγραφέας αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων επιτέλους θα δώσει λύση στην ανομία που επικρατεί στην πόλη.

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι η κεντρική πλοκή της αφήγησης δεν είναι το δυνατό σημείο του βιβλίου, όμως αυτό έχει γίνει εσκεμμένα ώστε να εστιάσει, κυρίως, ο αναγνώστης στα συμφραζόμενα και στην περιγραφή των χαρακτήρων και της κατάστασης που επικρατεί στην πόλη.

Εντάσεις , μικροσυμβάντα, διαφθορά, σκοτωμοί, ανεξιχνίαστα εγκλήματα, δυνάμεις καταστολής, συνδικαλιστές, απεργίες, προβοκάτσια και γενικότερα μία πόλη που φαίνεται ότι ανά πάσα στιγμή πρόκειται να εκραγεί , είναι κάποια από τα στοιχεία που χαρακτηρίζουν την χαριτωμένη ιστορία μας.

Επίσης σημαντικό χώρο λαμβάνουν οι ιστορικές σημειώσεις του παρελθόντος του δήμου και του Μεξικού καθώς και τα γράμματα του ήρωα προς τη γυναίκα του – σε αυτά βρίσκεται όλο το ζουμί της υπόθεσης και ομολογώ ότι τα λάτρεψα – με τα οποία την ενημερώνει για τα γεγονότα και την κατάσταση που επικρατεί στην πόλη.

Σίγουρα δεν είναι το τέλειο μυθιστόρημα ή αυτό που θα θυμάστε για πολύ καιρό, έχει όμως πολύ εύστοχες περιγραφές και αρκετά ποιοτικές στιγμές. ΄Αλλωστε ο συγγραφέας και αρχηγός της αστυνομίας υποστηρίζει πως δε θα το έγραφε ούτε ο ίδιος, το έβρισκε πολύπλοκο και μη ελκυστικό!

«Καλύτερο μυθιστόρημα είναι εκείνο που ποτέ δεν τελειώνει, εκείνο που ποτέ δε γράφεται, εκείνο που πάντα το σκέφτεσαι, εκείνο που το κουβαλάς μαζί σου για πάντα και θα πεθάνει μαζί σου εξαιτίας του παράλογου αυτού γάμου ανάμεσα στο βιβλίο που ποτέ δε θα φτιαχτεί και τον άνθρωπο που ποτέ δε θα το φτιάξει»

Taibo II es una rara aproximación a la realeza literaria: sus libros siempre rozan la magnificencia, sin que devengan realmente obras maestras. No obstante, resultan entretenidas a más no poder. Como es el caso de “La vida misma”, una novela policiaca desarrollada en un imaginario pueblo norteño que, como bien dice el autor, no por ser ficticia deja de reflejar nuestra precaria realidad.
Las autoridades de Santa Ana, el ficticio poblado antes mencionado, convoca a José Daniel Fierro, un semi exitoso escritor de novelas policiacas, a que se convierta en el nuevo jefe de la policía municipal en dicha localidad. ¿La razón? Pues alguien que conoce tan bien los tejemanejes de los crímenes debe ser capaz de aplicar tanta sapiencia detectivesca en la realidad, ¿no? (y también que, al ser alguien famosón, los criminales se la pensarán dos veces antes de darle cayo y convocar una mega carambola de medios informativos y autoridades gubernamentales). Desde su arribo, comienzan a sucederse los crímenes y los asesinatos (el primero de ellos, y que desata todo el caos, el de una gringilla que quién sabe de dónde salió), y el “Jefe Fierro” nomás no acierta a descubrir las motivaciones de los homicidas, mientras los judiciales, los líderes priistas y los pistoleros de los caciques regionales se entrometen y desatan peores desencuentros.
El “Los Angeles Times” califica a “La vida misma” como “Una comedia amarga; rara vez la novela policiaca es llevada con tanta fuerza”; una buena descripción para este relato que, sin ser lo mejor de Paco Ignacio Taibo II, seguro redunda entre lo más ameno.

I raced through this book enjoying every minute of it. Paco Ignacio Taibo II's Life Itself is the most heterodox of mysteries. A writer of detective fiction is approached in Mexico City by three men who want him to become police chief of a small Mexican city in the northwest part of the country. José Daniel Fierro agrees to do just that, despite his having no previous experience with policing or firearms or local politics.

And the town itself is one where things are happening in rapid succession. A blonde gringa is knifed, and her nude body is found on the steps of the altar of the local Catholic church. Then three more homicides happen, all the victims being villains who are suspected of the gringa's murder. We never find out who the perpetrator of these crimes is, but there is a general feeling that the last three victims were best shoved into a hasty grave.

Thus the title: The crimes and their non-solution is like "life itself."

It's hard to classify this as a “detective novel”. A noted Mexico City novelist is enlisted to be Police Chief of a small left-leaning town. The last several Chiefs have been assassinated, and it is hoped that his fame will deter that from happening to him. His wife threatens divorce and his letters to her are interspersed with the action. An absurd funny moving book in which everything happens and nothing changes. Perhaps. Our Hero says in his final letter that he would never write a book such as this.

Es la primera de Taibo II que leo, pero hace algo bien chido y bien difícil: se crea un estilo dentro de la novela negra sin romper con las convenciones del género. Además, la inclusión de las cartas del personaje (un novelista de cincuenta años) a su esposa, las notas para la escritura y la narración en sí, le dan una movilidad interesante y profundizan para conocer a los personajes, todo sin perder el sentido del humor.

Mi piacciono molto gli scrittori sudamericani, sanno creare quell'atmosfera un po' surreale anche se sono completamente immersi nella vita di tutti i giorni, sembra sempre che parlino di un posto dietro casa, ma in realtà c'è un dettaglio o un avvenimento che mi fa pensare alle favole. Il Messico di Paco Ignacio Taibo II è, allo stesso tempo, moderno e antico, come chiuso in una bolla estranea al resto del mondo, i personaggi sono persone comuni a cui chiunque di noi potrebbe somigliare e la trama è così confusa e assurda, molto interpretabile, una vicenda che fa imbestialire in un romanzo giallo, perché non è mai chiaro cosa è successo e per quale motivo, eppure così simile alla vita reale. Ottimo inizio del 2023.

La vida misma

Se me hizo interesante ese narrado a tres vertientes, las notas de historia del pasado del pueblo, las cartas a la esposa para dar su interpretación del jefe Fierro y la narrativa principal.

El libro básicamente se divide en dos, la primera parte es la presentación de personajes y planteamiento de la situación. La segunda es el crimen a resolver que inicia con el hallazgo de una mujer rubia desnuda en la iglesia asesinada a cuchillazos.

Es entretenido por que como tal el jefe Fierro no es un policía, de repente sugiere cosas de sus novelas que en el pueblo no son posibles, y ese desconocimiento del pueblo ayuda al mismo tiempo que va descubriendo pistas a darle un matiz extra al seguir contando la historia del pueblo y la encrucijada política en la que se encuentra por su misma organización, como por los sospechosos del crimen.

Un final así muy de tajo, que cierra bien el caso policial más deja al aire el futuro del pueblo y el protagonista.

¿Qué puede salir de las aventuras de un escritor de novelas policiacas cincuentón, con varios nietos y que sin ninguna experiencia acepta ser nombrado jefe de la policía en un pueblo del que jamás ha oído hablar? Como mínimo, la promesa de divertirse montones. Para empezar, en el libro de Paco Ignacio Taibo II (Gijón, Asturias, 1949) se encontrarán referencias veladas y abiertas a otros cultores del género policiaco, como Ross MacDonald, E. A. Poe, y otros escribanos fuera del género como Francisco Quevedo, André Malraux, Juan Rulfo y un largo etcétera. En el protagonista también encontré reminiscencias al profesor Latimer de La máscara de Dimitrios; en La vida misma como en la obra del inglés Eric Ambler los personajes abandonan la comodidad de la especulación teórica y se meten con todos sus miedos en el torbellino de la acción, sin perder de vista que son ante todo artesanos de la palabra escrita.
El personaje central de Taibo es José Daniel Fierro, casado con Ana y residente del D.F., quien después de aceptar el encargo no puede reprimir el impulso de ejercer como observador y anotador de lo que acontece y ha acontecido en la mítica Santa Ana, al norte de México (¿cerca del Condado de Yoknatapatawpha o muy próxima a Macondo?), como tampoco de narrar las acciones cotidianas de este ayuntamiento rojo en pie de lucha contra la maquinaria oficial y los pistoleros del PRI y, por ahí derecho, opinar sobre la historia y el país del que hace parte esa comunidad sometida a todas las tensiones de una ciudad real en donde los hechos son interpretados según la lente de los interesados y afectados.
Me encantó leer las ocurrencias, situaciones y lenguaje de la novela del excelente maquinador que es Taibo II, como la de que el arma de dotación de JD sea una escopeta porque así "a cinco metros no le falla a un arado", o que durante la investigación de uno de los crímenes entre a una librería y salga con 47 libros y ni un peso en el bolsillo, pues "JD había crecido en la escuela de hacer de los pavores líneas escritas a máquina". Quizás es porque en la literatura escondía los miedos que le producía su nuevo oficio. Pero esta es la perla para mí: "Un norteamericano fuera de su país es un ser vulnerable que tiene que rodearse de refrescos embotellados, pasta de dientes y abrelatas eléctrico si no quiere morir de soledad".
El libro de Taibo me gustó tanto que lo leí y lo releí, hice apuntes y lo discutí en menos de una semana.

La parte poliziesca è la meno interessante, e anche la meno riuscita. Ma lo esplicita Paco Ignacio Taibo stesso, in una lettera nella quale il protagonista, una sorta di suo alter-ego, giallista dalle simpatie rivoluzionarie che diventa all’improvviso capo della polizia di una giunta rossa, scrive alla moglie: “È una storia di delitti orrendi, ma non sono questi che contano, bensì (come in tutti i romanzi polizieschi messicani) il contesto”.
Anche questo romanzo funziona così: i delitti contano poco, l’indagine non è certo un capolavoro di suspence e colpi di scena. Ciò che ammalia è il racconto del Messico profondo, del sogno rivoluzionario, di una città che è una piccola utopia incapace di realizzarsi fino in fondo. Un po’ come la vita.

"Era una novela de pasiones descubiertas, por eso de que no eran pasiones ocultas, porque de estas últimas nadie escribe ya."
En ocasiones nuestra vida toma cursos por demás impredecibles y los tomamos con un dejo de humor e irreverencia como diciéndole a la vida misma "mira que me burlo también de ti". Sin duda una novela para el gozo lector que no tiene escenarios complejos antes bien si muy cotidianos en esta mexicanidad tan única en el mundo.

Si te gusta PITII te va a encantar, pero puede ser raro si no te gusta su estilo. Recomiendo leer los de Olga Lavanderos antes.

Cuando alguien menciona "novela negra" lo primero que imaginamos es una ciudad oscura y sucia llena de delincuentes sanguinarios. Este libro es completamente lo opuesto a eso. Tiene una buena dosis de humor (creo que es el único libro que me ha hecho reír) y lo sitúa en una ciudad roja en México, lo cual ya de por sí es bastante interesante. PIT mezcla personajes bastante interesantes y agradables, así como situaciones de la vida diaria en la política mexicana.
Si le doy cuatro estrellas es porque a veces había párrafos donde no tenía ni idea de lo que estaba hablando. Frases fuera de contexto (quizás poéticas, pero fuera de contexto al fin y al cabo).
Es un buen libro para iniciar con la novela negra, bastante digerible. Las páginas se pasan solas.

Interesante ejercicio novelístico de Paco Ignacio Taibo II con un personaje en el que se refleja ya la vez se hace una autocrítica como escritor y a la vez un drama policiaco donde es un jefe de la policía improvisado en un poblado llamado Santa Ana donde el partido en el gobierno hace las mismas triquiñuelas que hace a nivel nacional.
