I last read this book on 13 December 2005 and gave it two stars. This book was originally published in 1972 and I probably bought my copy a few years later. (Actually ten years later as I bought it in 1982.) There's a small notch punched out of it so it must have been a remaindered copy I got cheap. There are not many books I have managed to keep hold of for over forty years and I have read this one several times. Essentially it's a series of interviews with people involved in various aspects of the music business and it is subtitled "Profiles of the pop process". I imagine Wale taped the interviews which were transcribed by someone with no interest in pop music and as the book does not appear to have been proof read by anyone with a knowledge of music there are some bizarre renditions of the names of musicians, bands, songs and albums. It's a fascinating read although some of the interviewees are less than forthcoming. For example despite being pressed several times on what a music publisher actually does Dick James reveals remarkably little apart from stressing how busy he is and how hard he works. I enjoyed re-reading this and it deserves three stars.
