With simple text coupled with beautiful, cozy illustrations, this primary picture book describes a family preparing for the holidays from a young child’s point of view.
A young girl and her parents prepare for Christmas in this lovely picture book from author/illustrator Catherine Stock. Selecting and decorating a tree, writing to Santa, baking Christmas cookies, going caroling, and preparing cocoa on Christmas Eve, their holiday is full of fun, and family togetherness, culminating in Christmas Day, with presents in the stocking and under the tree...
Christmas Time is the third book I have read from Stock's six-volume The Festive Year collection, following upon Thanksgiving Treat and Secret Valentine. These books pair simple texts with beautiful watercolor artwork, and are intended for younger children, highlighting their experience of these important holidays. This entry in the collection was particularly appealing to me, both from a textual and illustrative standpoint, highlighting activities I recall loving as a girl (many of them still a part of my Christmas), and featuring visuals that capture the beauty of winter days. Recommended to younger picture book audiences looking for Christmas titles.
A lovely little story - slightly dated but enjoyable - about a little girl getting ready for Christmas. Flo loves getting a tree and writing to Santa this year. She liked stockings and gingerbread houses too. A lovely Christmas tradition has been set.
Overall a bit dated in some of the illustrations, but a pleasant display of things a young child would do at Christmas time. Although the clothing was dated in the illustration where the young girl goes to visit Santa, her relutance about talking to him is well done.
I read a hardbound edition that has the same cover as the paperback.
Wrong time of year to read a Christmas book (end of May), but my son loves Christmas and had to check it out at the library. It was a sweet story about how Christmas is about family and all the different activities you can take part in: caroling, buying and tree and decorating, snacks for Santa and his reindeer, visiting Santa or sending him a letter, etc.
