I purchased this book thinking that it would help me get established within the LinkedIn community. Hard as it may be to imagine, I am completely new to social media; I don't even have a Facebook account. But it wasn't hard to figure out what does what once with a little elbow grease and a shoulder to the wheel. The book was good in providing that introduction, although the layout of LinkedIn has changed substantially since the book was produced. Most of the graphics attempting to demonstrate the how of the various steps in the book are therefore obsolete.
The book is written by two authors, and whoever edited the book did a horrible job; not only are the pages filled with way too many spelling and grammatical errors but also the voices of the two authors are not melded together sufficiently to provide one authoritative voice for the text. Thus the read is very jarring. But what distresses me most about the book is that it provides no real information about how to do what the title says, which is to succeed in business. Yes, I learn that I need to enter a headline for my profile, and the book demonstrates how to enter the headline so that it appears at the top of the profile. But that's baby stuff. I want to know what words to use or how to craft a headline that will give me the edge over all the yo-yos who don't know how to use social media to their advantage. On that most important subject, the book is mum.
In fact, the book tells you ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about how to craft your profile or to use the tools provided by LinkedIn so that you gain an advantage over your competition. It talks about how you can use the various features in LinkedIn to look for a job or to promote your business, but when it comes time for the rubber to hit the road the most advice you get is essentially one of trial and error. "If you play with it long enough, you will figure it out."
No. I paid for this stupid book --- repeat, I PAID MONEY FOR THIS --- because I thought that the authors had it figured out. What I learned is that I am the real idiot for financially supporting an effort that doesn't even come close to clearing the bar. Is it too much to ask for nuts and bolts? I don't think so, especially if I am paying out money. This book is so deficient I wouldn't even check it out of the library; it's not worth anyone's time. I therefore cannot recommend it to anyone.
This book was published in 2009 and not surprisingly, it's already extremely out-dated. The book relies heavily on diagrams and "screenshots" to show where things are and what you need to click on, but many of the features no longer exist or are done differently now. The screenshots themselves use a very small font and little contrast, so they're difficult to see anyway.
This was a very detailed book with step-by-step instructions about how to do things on linked-in. I had only started using linked in a week or so before I started reading this and even so, I found this level of instruction very tedious, especially since it was out-dated. I thought I would pick up more generalized tips about how linked in could benefit my business, but as is the case with most social media, I was able to figure this out more practically, by actually using the site and seeing what benefits it had. I don't really recommend this book - I recommend getting on the site and poking around; you'll get far more benefit in a much shorter amount of time!
LinkedIn, one of the Internet’s top, business-oriented social networking sites, focuses on helping people build their professional connections for fun and profit. Authors Eric Butow and Kathleen Taylor provide detailed steps on how to use every feature, big and small, on the site. Supporting their instructions with numerous, helpful screen shots, they clearly explain how to exchange references, promote your company, set up a home page, look for employment, recruit new employees, establish and maintain your business network, and more. The book’s disadvantage is that Web site logistics change in an instant; its advantage is that it offers the immediate, hands-on information people want so they can create stronger networks. getAbstract reports that beginning networkers who want basic (actually, very basic), detailed instructions for using LinkedIn can link up here to get exactly what they need to know.
Wasn't quite what I was expecting. It is a good book for a beginner to LinkedIn and social networking. There are a LOT of screenshots that will help anyone who wants to quickly skim. My biggest complaint about the book is the step by step walk through of everything. Click here click there look up there click that...and on and on.
Too detailed. Focuses heavily on step-by-step. Expected more coverage of the networking aspect. Because of this, it's already outdated. If it had focused on how to make the most of connections, it'd have more impact and last longer.
This was a very basic "how-to" guide with (now outdated) screenshots. I had hoped that it would focus more on business success tips, but it instead focused on looking at the different features of LinkedIn and how to use them in general.
