Create paintings with feeling The Painterly Approach bridges the gap between what you see as an artist, and what you feel. More than painting an appealing landscape, it's about making your viewer feel the wind, experience the dance of shadows and sunlight, and admire the wondrous intermingling of colors that attracted you to your subject in the first place. In this gorgeously illustrated book, Bob Rohm shows you how to see the world from a painterly perspective and translate it into expressive, poetic paintings that elicit an emotional response from your viewer.
I'm just starting out in painting, but know the basics of compositions and how paint and the colour wheel work. I found this book extremely helpful for better understanding how to deal with light and colour. The book has pointed out a number of things that I've been doing wrong, common practices that are inconsistent with the way that light and colour work. I have started reading through a number of books, and this is the best I've read so far.
Excellent book for the artist that is wanting to be more expressive in their work. The book is geared more toward the landscape which is what I love. It’s not your same old boring art book that discusses all the basics but instead explains how to get that painterly look many of us artist long for. I took many notes throughout the book. If you are getting into plein air painting or even working in the studio this is a great book to help you achieve that beautiful loose painterly look.
Excellent book! It provide a very solid frame work to observe, simplify and implement paintings for a wide range of subjectives. I have already applied immediately the approach and I was amazed by the improvement I can make!
This book is a Must have for every artist but especially those looking to read consolidated information , straightforward. Many principles are covered in one resource! I purchased an e version but turned around and bought a hardcover too. I cannot say enough about how valuable this book is.
This frustrated artist is always on the verge of tossing brushes and paints out the window and declaring to never touch so much as a pencil again. But Mr. Rohm, through his book, gives me hope through very simple and practical guidelines. The exercises incorporate different mediums in different situations stressing an important lesson, like relating the elements of a painting to the horizon line. I know it, but do I really do it? Love his checklist at the end of the book too. Still frustrated but nothing has flown out the windows yet.
